May 28th and 29th--my fifth and sixth W2A concerts. Mary J. blew it up on Saturday and Prince performed for three hours on Sunday. Wonderful! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

May 6 with Esperanza Spalding My first ever Prince show.
May 11 at The Troubadour (first show) I arrived early, and took my place 5 feet from the man himself, standing next to DR FB, who is actually really super cool. Mike Epps was en fuego that night.
May 13 with Janelle Monae and Stevie Wonder I got these tickets three hours before the show, and wound up with first row VIP seating by the piano for 25 lone bucks. I thought it was a mistake the entire night. Sanitation had to work extra hard that night. They were stuck with the job of picking up pieces of my MIND off the Forum floor.
May 27 with Nikka Costa I showed up late and alone for this show. I missed Costa's set, and all of Prince's sampler set. But he played Baby, I'm A Star. That made up for missing Nikka.
May 28 with Mary J Blige My seats for these were in the colonnade, second to last row, and behind the stage. When they dropped the lights, we made our way down to the mezzanine where we stayed for the entirety of the show. The ticket holders never made it to their seats to claim them.
Favorite moments: Stevie and Prince doing superstition Prince and Mary J doing Nothing compares 2 U
Least Favorite moment: Prince having to call security on the woman next to me during Musicology for taking photos at the Troub. It upset him, and was apparent in the way he performed that song.
Biggest regret: Giving up my HOB Jazz Club ticket to a friend who has never seen Prince before. He loved it so much, he reviewed it.

No disrespect but your friend did not attend the HOB Jazz Cafe/second show based upon his "review." The details are vague at best, missing or erroneous at worst. Why make up a review of a show that was not attended? Anyone who was there, or anyone who read any actual reviews of the show either here on this site or elsewhere on the 'net knows that this was actually a hard rock power trio set featuring songs familiar to everyone there and did not feature any jazz solos or jamming by the NPG.

None. I wish I had the chance to attend the last show though but they all finished on the week I was going to attend. It seems like I keep missing everything.

4/21.
Yeah, that's it. I'm pathetic. But, I LOVED the show. Reading the set lists of subsequent shows, I was VERY happy that I was at the show I was at. But, I do wish I could've made it to two or three more (especially the club gigs).
Oh, yeah, that was my first (and so far only) Prince show.
What did I do the next day? I went on a manic Prince CD buying spree to TRY to get all the ones that I didn't already have in my (what I thought was "impressive", turned out to be "measly") Prince CD collection. (was I shocked to discover how far behind I was in "keeping up"!). So, in the matter of a week, I nearly TRIPLED my Prince CD collection.
Still on the list of ones to get:

4/22 - Mint Condition. Prince opens with Beginning Endlessly, Future Soul Song. In rock guitar mode. I enjoyed this show even though he played "only" 90 mins.
4/23 - Chaka Khan, Larry Graham. I rank this as the 2nd best Forum show I saw.
4/29 - Mint Condtion again. Prince plays guiatr on one song.
4/30, 5/6, 5/7
5/11 - Troubador 11 pm show - best Prince concert I've seen.
5/13 - Janelle Monae, Stevie Wonder. One of my favorite Prince arena concerts.
5/14
5/26 - 7 pm House of Blues. This was like a Forum show with extended jams in a smaller venue. I was close enough to the stage to reach out and touch him if I wanted to. Fun, enjoyable show, but not mind blowing.
5/26 10 pm HOB Jazz Cafe show - ranks right up there with the Troubadour show. Highlights of the night were Brown Skin with Shelby J. singing, LRC, Bambi (hate the lyrics but love the blistering guitar work)
5/27 - Nikka Costa. Got into the aftershow but no Prince (heard he played drums for a second but I missed it
5/29 - Show #21 according to Prince math. Good show, 3 hours, great energy. I was expecting The Time to play so I was disappointed they didn't. Felt a little bit anti-climactic to me.
I have written longer reviews of various shows in their respective threads.
Before these shows, the only other Prince concerts I've been too are Purple Rain (in Dallas, TX); 3121 in Vegas (without aftershow because I went alone); Shows #1 & #3 at Nokia in 2009.

I'm trying to post a link to the thread where my review appears with several others but for whatever reason something buggy is preventing me from doing so and I can't waste anymore time with it. It's contained in the thread 3 Prince Clubs Shows on Wednesday Night, and my review is on page 13. Several reviews and comments about the HOB shows are contained in that thread. Enjoyed them all for varying reasons.

Commenting the 2 shows I did attend:
4/23 Definitely one of the better Prince shows I've seen out of the 20 or so I've seen in my life. Energy. Funk. Opening with D.M.S.R.! Then Mountains. Chaka. Okay loge ticket.
5/14 Definitely one of my least favorite Prince shows; starting off by "sleeping" and then going into "When Eye Lay My Hands on You" is not the way I'd like to see a show kick off. When the highlight in my memory was seeing Halle Berry dancing onstage to "Cool" you know it's not the best Prince show. But I had 8th row loge right by the piano so it was a pretty great seat that became available last second for just $25! [Edited 6/7/11 22:58pm]

Esperanza Spaulding as opening act: I loved it when Prince came out with his black hat and jammed with Esperanza. Sheila E. set that night. Prime loge seats for 25 bucks. Went in a group, we all raved about the show afterwards.
Amel Larrieux as opener: Missed much of Amel, but Prince did two of my favorites, Insatiable and Scandalous. Worth every penny to see and hear them. Took a friend as a gift to her, she was so grateful. Great riser seats this time, awesome show.
House of Blues Jazz Cafe': Prince came out in a black headband, black clothing, really ready to do it. Thanks to Phoenix Fire for the gum. LOL. Shelby sang Brown skin, and touched Ultrafunk's face. Unreal performance. I am still trying to process this one, as in, what the hell did I experience? Surreal. So worth it. She's Always In My Hair, The One. Gingerbread Man was incredible. I had never heard it before. It melted all the women. The crowd sang in a call and response to a slow version of Little Red Corvette, we sang the Slow Down part. Seriously, it was great seeing Prince from 3 or 4 ft away, playing, and just watching him as a musician. Not jazzy, but blues, rock, & something much different from the Forum shows. Glad I witnessed it. It was really nice meeting some people from the Org too. Great energy in the room. If he ever does another show like this, I am there.
Mary J. Blige opener: Saw the whole opening performance. Mary put in work. She gave it up for the fans. Loved the duet with Prince on Nothing Compares 2 U. Prince did another favorite of mine, D.M.S.R., and one of my top songs of all time, Shhh. I thought I was close to heaven when he performed Shhh. I was hoping for that song, and he did it. I was floating. LOL. Amazing seat in VIP, floor, 5th row.
All in all, I am glad that I was able to catch these shows, & wish I could've gone to more. I tried to get a ticket for the Troubador, no such luck. I'm just a funk, punk/funk, R & B Prince loving fan for the most part, but enjoyed pretty much everything to be honest. I even liked the covers, Which Way Is Up, Inglewood Swinging, and Play That Funky Music (though not very popular here). I liked the songs that I had never seen him perform before such as Laydown, and Future Soul Song. I feel sad that the 21 shows are over, and done. It was a great experience.
