I loved it!
No playing with the lights or video clip before he started. He came out about 5 min. after King (which I liked)
Did all of R.Beret
Wicked Guitar all night
Controversy was cut short it seemed to me.
He did ride his bike out for the last encore.
3 hours for a finale', I'll take it.
"Let's Work" was done differently.
When he started "Mountains" I thought "17 Days" would follow.
1st timer said it was great and now he knows why I went 11 times.

Maaaaaan....... Mountains and Anotherloverholenyohead are the only jams I didn't get to see out of what he's been playing during this run. Got in 6 shows and did see Uptown, 17 Days, and She's Always in My Hair though, so I guess it kinda evens out! Still pretty bummed about those 2 missed though!

not gonna flame ya for it. it was pretty much as i expected. that said, what stood out to me was how excited prince was to have a sold out show. i hadn't been to a single completely sold out show of his in the five or so i've been to (my first of this weekend, obviously). i think thats how he expected every show to be, to be honest (as did i).
the opening act, well, yeah, was just odd.

I hadn't seen the Insatiable/Scandalous/Adore trifecta yet so that made my night. Throw in Mountains, She's Always in my Hair and Future Soul Song and I'm one happy camper.
PS: At last night's show the security person standing on the floor directly below me was taking pictures of the stage with her Blackberry Hypocrites.

Who opened? and who is KING?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
King opened... Female trio- Two voaclists and a keyboard player
The played in a tunnel not on the Glyph, maybe for the acoustics
... and maybe this is why Prince came out with no warning
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
King certainly made for a sleepy opener. Fitting with the new age video beforehand I guess. Takes the cake for the worst opening I've act I've ever seen, and I've witnessed some real horror shows. Thankfully they only played three songs. Made sense they didn't get on the real stage, don't deserve to be there!
Prince last night, damn! Incredible performance, whenever he wasn't smiling he was makin' his O face with the guitar. Best of the three shows I caught hands down.

Prince residency here in beautiful Cali4nia was the best xperience of my Purple musical life. 2 b able 2 c him when wanted. Playing his purple funk Riding his bike within touching distance. He seem so free here in his second home. It was historic. Have a feeling its not over yet... [Edited 5/30/11 10:45am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Prince KILLED IT on The Beautiful Ones. I mean he LITERALLY killed it. Started on the piano, then finishing strutting all over the stage. Definitely the highlight of the night for me. Great falsetto, great screaming, intense passion and emotion. His shirt was open, he was sexy as he want to be; he had the crowd eating out of his hand.
He had good energy last night, his voice, dancing, guitar/bass/piano were all on point. Another highlight what he did that slithering crawl across the stage. Don't why I'm such a sucker for that, but I am.
Last night felt like a greatest hits show to me, although the first song "Love We Make" was different. Maybe he was trying to please the more casual fan since it was a sold out show.
Maceo was jamming last night too. Prince called for Maceo to come play during Purple Rain but he didn't show up on cue, so Prince played a blisering guitar solo instead. Maceo eventually showed up 5 minutes later and played the hell of the sax.
It seemed like he trying to pull out all the stops, but I was expecting The Time cuz of the rumors, so I was disappointed when they didn't perform. Prince did 3 Time songs last night, Cool, The Bird, and Jungle Love. He also did Love Bizarre with Nikka Costa; don't recall seeing if that was on the set list.
The Forum shows were great, but I prefer the intimacy, musicianship and rarities of the 3 small venue shows I saw. Of the Forum shows, my 2 faves are 4/30 with Chaka/Larry Graham and 5/13 with Janelle Monae & Stevie (would have loved to have been at that particular aftershow). Other songs that I will carry with me always are Whole Lotta Love w/Nikka Costa, Brown Skin w/Shelby J (at HOB Jazz Cafe), and LRC at HOB Jazz Cafe (seeing Prince smile when we sang "Slow Down" right on cue).
Going through some serious Purple withdrawal, y'all. Saw 9 shows @ Forum, 3/4 of a show @ Troubadour, and 2 shows @ HOB.
Last night might have been the final night, but I hope he decides to play a few more times in town before he heads off to Europe.

Ahhhh! Would have loved to have been there for that!!! This tour is going to be one that definitely stands out in my mind! I'm so happy to live in L.A. and have been able to catch 4 of the shows. The night with Stevie, I got 2nd row risers just an hour before showtime for 25 bucks!! I went alone but had the best time.

For a short while in 2011 I was very lucky to visit that Purple Funky Town Place . . . where time stood still, where everyone danced, sang and moved 2 the music of peace, love, funk and soul! It was a very beautiful place to be (if only for a little while).
I've been to 8 Forum shows and as promised by his Purpleness (a nick name borrowed from a blogging friend), each was slightly different than the other. Prince is without a doubt a Genius and I am so glad I was able to experience it as many times as I did.
There are so many highlights from last night and from the other shows. For me, last night having him sing Adore along with Insatiable & scandalous, wow! I will always remember that! As for the other highlights, definitely Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige singing Nothing Compares 2 U, Shiela E, Nikka Costa, Esperanza Spalding, his guitar playing, his dancing . . . and his band, back-up singers and the twins. Much love and thanks for taking us on this memorable journey to a place where music is the bond! At one moment last night, the group in our section joined hands and raised them up in the air united by his greatness and sharing that wonderful moment! I thought the wave last night was kind of cool too.
Now if only I could win the Lotto so I can fly to Europe! I'll be in Italy this year, but unfortunately not while he's there! all I can say, is if you are in a place that is remotely close to where he'll be performing, try to get to the venue because I guarantee, it will be an unforgettable experience.

Mary J. Blige gave her all on Saturday! I like her albums but she sang her heart out for the Forum and you could feel it. I was MOVED by her performances. She did justice to Chaka and Bob Marley, also. What a treat. I've never seen Mary perform live so I felt like I got a two-for-one on Saturday! Prince ended the final encore with an abbreviated version of Housequake, as I recall--with a black fedora ala One Nite--then he said he had to go. If my memory is incomplete it is because I stayed up after going to the Prince concert last night to catch an early plane and haven't gotten any sleep yet! But this set list sounds about right...but I know something is being left out... It will come to me. BTW I like his dancing to kiss and the Romantic Trilogy in the red outfit and high heels rather than the furry boots! But I totally felt satisfied with his three hour concert last night--as opposed to the Saturday concert, which seemed incomplete and not as passionate and intense as Sunday--on Prince's part. Mary J. KILLED it on Saturday IMO! This is my sixth W2A concert and I left the Forum satisfied, satiated, and sanctified! I amended the above list to add Pass the Peas (sorry for saying Peach; that's what my tired ears heard) and Housequake [Edited 5/30/11 12:46pm]

I'm sorry to laugh but "Pass the Peach" conjures up some funny images...the song's correct title is Pass the Peas its one of Maceo's signature tunes originally as part of the James Brown band.

This is the song I have been waiting for him to do. Seeing, hearing, feeling him do The Beautiful Ones last night as he killed it, was for me the highlight of the tour.
Having said that, what I wouldn't give to see him do Jack U Off or Private Joy...but then I know, he "can't do that", he's "in rehab". I love him no matter what. if U ain't hip 2 the rare housequake, shut up already, damn!

Yeah, I was about to add that it was "Pass the Peas" before I saw your post! But "Pass the Peach" totally sounds like a song that Prince would write and perform! (At least in the bad ole days!) Also, interesting to note that there were some hard core religious fundamentalist protestors on the corner of Prairie & Pinkay in front of the Forum with bullhorns and signs protesting all the sins in the world, resist drunkeness and fornication, and telling people to go to church! I turned around to the people walking with me and said, "I'm puzzled. Why are they protesting a PRINCE concert for God's sake?!! Prince goes to church, too, more than those MFers probably do!" Huge laugh at that one! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Another interesting aside (or maybe not ) were the comments from the Caribbean cab driver who picked us up after the concert. He has been a long time resident of LA and drove many folks to the Forum in the last couple of months. He stated that many people in LA have the impression that Prince is broke because he is doing so many concerts for discounted dollars at a historic but neglected venue such as the Forum. Then we discussed the HOB concerts. I stated that one of the HOB concerts were for charity, that I heard about. Then, I also stated that Prince, in the Sunday concert, stressed his love for the old Forum with its peeling paint and needed upgrades and he encouraged people to push to keep it as a venue for MUSIC, after mentioning groups he saw play there (including his own LOL). I pointed out that Prince could have made a lot more money by doing a residency at some fancy swag venue in Las Vegas. He thought about it for a moment and agreed with me. Then he paused and said, "I've heard that a Prince concert is always a good time." I said I totally agree with that and told him that if he has the chance for one more weekend, not to miss it! Yup--that's one that was left out. And yeah he played COOL with the audience making the finger signs as before. But I wanted more and he played what I wanted to hear. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
