Hi everyone. Here's my take: I could see how someone would dismiss the first show. It was very similar to a Forum show. There was a lot of dancing and the songs were basically the same. However, I was about two people deep from dead center of the stage. I could have stolen a guitar pick if I tried (I didnt'). Being so close to the action made it very special. I also catch the little things like him singing the "I don't want to be a poet..." of DMSR. He doesn't sing that part at the Forum. There were many moments like that that had the "small club" vibe. And the bass was fucking insane. He played the riff of "My Stick." Very good indeed.
Initially, I didn't know what to make of the 2nd show. They let in the people from the 1st show after the people off the street. I was in the back (still probably only 15 feet away). My calves are sore from going "tip-toe" for an hour! My frustration of not being able to actually SEE the guitar work faded as I realized only the first couple rows of people probably saw it. He was only elevated off the floor a few inches. However, I was able to see his face and see him sing for about 90% of it. Oh and forget the hunter, Prince killed Bambi! He sang all of the lyrics and a seriously long solo. That's all I wanted to hear. Oh, and he played guitar on LRC, which I've been dying witness.
There were some real drunk assholes at the second show. Some fucker kept yelling "Purple Haze" in my ear and a couple kept making out in front of me.
I saw Cornell West from downstairs (he was upstairs shaking hands with people). That was very cool.

He also did Thank U Fa Letting Me Be Mice Elf Again at Show #1 (after Everyday People) and he also played some other funky tunes while playing bass in the same section. For show #2 he played and another rocky-bluesy instrumental of a song I didn't recognize before or after Endorphinmachine. Also, I think he did Bambi after Colonized Mind at Show #2.
I saw the 7 pm and 10 pm.
Review of 7 pm show:
The show started a little bit after 9 pm. First Mike Phillips came out and played snippets of funk songs on the vocoder. Then the band came out and started playing DMSR. After about 5-10 minutes, Prince came out, his back to the audience, dancing. He played guitar and sang the lyrics to Dance 4 me. Then he eventually sangs the words to DMSR. It seemed like the entire song went on for 20 minutes. The crowd was really into it.
The first highlight for me was Shhh. This is becoming my favorite song to see Prince do live. I think it combines what I like best about his music. It showcases his vocal and guitar playing abilities. Last night's version was on point. I really enjoyed Mountains too. It was pretty funky.
Then Prince took Ida's bass and played about 4 or 5 songs with it and tore the place up. On Let's Work Did a pretty blistering version of U Got The Look. Not my favorite song of his but he played hella guitar on it.
Cool was the encore. The music started, the girls sang Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, then Prince sang Cool. He and Shelby did that funky little dance routine several times, and Prince told the audience to shake something at the same time. Yes Prince, I was shaking what my mama gave me, at your command.
That show ended around 10:50, so it lasted about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Review of 11 pm show:
The show started sometime after 11:20 pm. Definitely a guitar heavy show and probably closer to the first show Prince did at the Troubadour earlier this month. All of the songs were extended jams feauturing solos by Renato on keys, Mike on sax, and Prince playing extended blues riffs on guitar. He killed on Dreamer and Bambi; Colonized Mind started off with kind of a reggae style to it. I liked hearing Mike play sax on Colonized Mind. Last night's version of Brown Skin... Shelby took it to chuuuuuch with her vocals. Even Prince had to give her some love at the end. The combination of Shelby killing it on vocals while Prince just focused on playing hella guitar... I think even if India Aire herself were there she would have to give them a bow. Then they went into She's Always In My Hair, one of my favorite Prince songs. Then they ended with LRC... to hear Prince play guitar on that was special. Prince did the cutest smile I've ever seen when the audience sang "Slow Down" at the right time without any prompting from him. You could tell he really got a kick out of that.
I would still put the 11 pm Troubadour show ahead of this one, but maybe because that was my very first Prince "small club" show. This show was great... more bluesy rock guitar style than the Troubadour one, but still a fantastic show.

I would say that the 11pm HOB set was closer to the SECOND Troubadour set than the first. I was in attendance at the first Troubadour show and while a great experience, it was not the hard rock trio vibe of the second. In fact, the set was the same as the second Troubadour show.
Renato sat in on one, maybe two songs. The rest was just Prince, JB and Ida with Mike Phillips sitting in on a few and Shelby doing two songs.
Very intense rock guitar power trio show...nirvana for a guitarist like me and/or fan of his playing. | |

I just realized I should have posted this here:
I was at the midnight show, and I have to say I loved it!!! I got in line around 10:30pm, and I was 4th behind 3 lovely ladies (including Jo - hi Jo!). They let us into the Foundation Room around 11:15 or 11:30pm, and all of us immediately bee-lined to the back of the room where the instruments were set up. There was no stage, no velvet rope - nothing was separating us and the place that Prince would stand a few feet away. It was a little surreal. I've seen some intimate Prince shows, but this, by far, was the best.
People started trickling in behind us, and there we stood for almost 2 hours or so (sorry if my timing is wrong, but I wasn't writing any of this down). We chatted amongst outselves, and exchanged Prince stories. We were all very civil. But then the 2nd show must have let out, because then a slew of people came into the Foundation Room, and some proceeded to jostle and push their way through the crowd and even a few dared to push themselves in front of us - the ones who had been standing in the exact same spot for over 2 hours. Not cool.
I somehow still managed to hold my spot - even turning back a drunk guy named Mike, who was either from Iowa or Minnesota - depending on when the story suited him. But then Morris Hayes made his way through the crowd and deposited about 4 girls right in front of me (and others) and told them to stay put. And there went my prime view of the stage. But luckily, I'm 6' 4" so I could still see over the girls Morris brought up.
Soon after the second show ended, Renato Neto and John Blackwell came up and noodled around on their instruments, making sure everything was working right. A little after 2:00am, Renato, John and Ida came out and started on a mellow jazz tune. Then Mike (Philly) Phillips starting soloing on the sax, and by the time he finished, the song had morphed into an all out jam.
Prince came out, and the band continued to jam while he did some last minute tweaks with the soundboard operator. A little bit later, he took over Ida's bass and sent her away. Pretty funny. Anyway, the show itself kind of went like that - Prince would jump from guitar, back to bass, over to keys, back to guitar - just doing whatever moved him. And he treated the stage like his personal mixing board. A wave of his hand and a point of the his finger had Renato stop on the keys to give way to Philly on the sax. I looked around a few times and felt like I was watching some band jam in their mom's garage - it felt that small.
So small, in fact, that more than a few people wanted to kill Mike (the drunk guy from Iowa/Minnesota - not the saxophonist Mike Philly). Mike, if you're reading this, you're a good guy, but I came to hear Prince, not you. Let's just hope if a taper did make it to that show, he/she was standing far away from you. Telling Prince to play a song for "Cool Rapids, Minnesota!!!" was funny once. Twenty times not so much.
Here's what I can remember/discern from the setlist. Sorry it's not complete, but the songs did sort of run into each other. And my memory ain't what it used to be. There were definitely others...
Instrumental Jam (sound check) I Wish Outstanding Which Way Is Up Working Day & Night (at least I think it was that with Prince on bass) Waiting in Vain (sung by ? - she was gorgeous whoever she was) Controversy It Takes Two Rude Boy Encore: Stratus
I'm not sure, but something might have pissed Prince off during "Stratus". He very abruptly signaled the band to stop - and they did on a dime cuz you know, they're tight like that - and then he ushered them each one-by-one off the stage like they were late for their next gig. As soon as he helped John get around his drum set, he followed him and waved his hands like "That's it." I don't know if someone took his picture again or he heard yet another futile request for "Purple Rain", but they disappeared real quick. It was a little strange.
As for the show itself, I can see how people in the back could be disappointed. If you couldn't see that Prince took over Ida's bass, then how could you react to it? But that is almost the inherent problem with seeing Prince. He sort of wants these small aftershows to be like a house party, that everyone ignore him and just dance. But the problem is you can't help but be drawn to him. Watching him work the guitar - and the BASS!!!! - was awe-inspiring. It all seemed so effortless, so fluid... so FUNKY! And watching Ida watching Prince was cool too - she was loving everything he was putting down. It was a great moment, but one that's lost for those in the back.
I think when you're that far back - like I was for the Conga Room show a few years back - you just have to treat it like a house party and dance your ass off. Because the Conga Room is still one of my favorite shows EVER, and I didn't see a damn thing.
But I'm glad I went. I felt the show was definitely worth the money. I've seen Prince around 40 times - 8 of those that this last Forum stand - so I really look forward to the jam sessions. It's nice to see him and the band try to relax, have fun and surprise themselves. And I think Renato and John are two of the best musicians he's ever played with. So it's always a treat to watch them interact with Prince.
Anyway, if anyone has corrections to my setlist, please help me out. And if anyone knows what charity that show was for, that would be cool to know as well. In true Prince fashion, he neglected to tell us that before he rushed off stage at 4:15am...

I agree that the restaurant performance was similar to the 2nd Troubadour show, but I don't want to dismiss alfbo's opinion, since I didn't attend the 1st show at the Troubadour. I know you did, as well, so I'm sure you can attest to whether there were any similarities or not.
But let me clarify a few things, since I realize not too many people want to bring anyone back from House of Blues Deliriousness. At the Troubadour's 2nd show, Prince performed Crimson and Clover, Peach, and Anotherloverholenyohead, to name a few songs that weren't performed last night. He also REALLY performed Endorphinmachine and did She's Always In My Hair and I Like It There MUCH better than he did last night. Last night's performance had exactly two songs that rivaled the show at the Troubadour: Bambi and Colonized Mind. If you want to throw Shelby J into the mix then yes, her rendition of Brown Skin surpassed what she delivered on May 11, 2011.
I saw a few people that attended both, the 2nd show last night and the 2nd show at the Troubadour and I'm interested in getting their take, but to me, the shows weren't even in the ballpark of each other. The Troubadour performance was WAY better and if people had illusions of experiencing something greater than Hendrix on the guitar there, then I assume they heard the Jimi Hendrix Twinz playing on May 11, because Prince was twice as good on the guitar that night. Only Bambi and Colonized Mind? How about Little Red Corvette? Yes, he gave half the singing duties to the audience, but it was exactly that kind of intimate, call-and-response house party vibe (plus his guitar work) that made it such a great performance. I mean, c'mon... 150 people screamed "Slow down!" for like three minutes straight over guitar and keyboard.
