Wolfie... be nice. I like Mary J okay, but I've never had the urge to see her in concert. However, I'm going to a Janelle Monae concert in a few weeks.
I think when it's all said and done, we might be mentioning Janelle Monae in the same sentence as Stevie Wonder and Prince. Not so sure that Mary J will be in that same company.

Wow! Mary J? That is so cool. Leelah James would be a cool opening act too. She has just as much a soulful voice as Mary J. Lawd L.A,. is really getting the 21 nights treatment. [Edited 5/24/11 7:11am]

What? Are You Serious? Let's do a recap of their careers:
At 26, Prince has written all the songs on For You, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, and has maybe another THREE HUNDERED SONGS unreleased at the time.
At 26, Stevie Wonder had not really recorded all that much, only 18 albums. I know Janelle Monae has more than 18 albums, right? Well, not to mention that poor weak Stevie Wonder had really only written the last 6 of those 18 albums. Gee, you would think that by age 26, that poor Stevie would have written more than the lowly 100 or more songs at that point.
Ok what has Janelle done? She is 26 by the end of 2011. Well, in a much, much, much weaker music business with really lame competition out there...she has ONE EP, and ONE LP. She has co-written much of her work, and has yet to fully write her own song by herself. Yeah, she's close to Stevie and Prince...almost there. If she writes and produces another 800 songs or so in the next few years, she will be in the same sentence.
What next? Lil' Wayne is considered a literary genius for having the astute ability to be so creative that he came up with the great idea to put Lil' in his name? Please.
I like Janelle Monae. She has a unique voice, she is beautiful, talented, and she does co-write her songs. To even think of comparing her to two musicians who by the same age had produced Purple Rain, and Songs In The Key Of Life is more humor than I can deal with. As far as I can tell from album credits, she doesn't so much as play the damb Triangle.

Her life's work is like a tootsie roll pop - it took a lot of work to get to the center despite the tempations and struggles to crack through and be eaten up already! There's more to a voice than just the vocal cords. She has substance.

I think the reference as a potential comparison is that Janelle Monae offers a rare uniqueness that isn't found in today's music industry. I don't think the implication was per talent and ability, because Prince and Stevie can bang out songs in their sleep. But Janelle Monae's humility, discipline, and positivity...combined with her voice and dancing skill.... could catapult her into places that we might not forsee at the moment.

Thanks! I thought about clarifying what I meant but was afraid it would turn into an argument. Thanks for doing it for me!
Edited to add: I'm a fan of Mary J and I like a lot of her songs. I just feel more of a connetion to Janae and what she's trying to do. [Edited 5/24/11 14:13pm]

I'd like to see Mary J. since I've never seen her live. I have Janelle Monae tix for June so I wouldn't be missing out if she doesn't open for Prince this weekend! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Weezy got skills. I used to hate until I actually listened to a few of his CDs. It may not be one's cuppa tea but you got to respect the work and the game.
Back to P...yeah, no comparison between Mary J and Janelle.

Mary would easily qualify as the opening act with the least talent so far even with the most commercial success
I have never understood the MJB thing... actually I do understand stand it. The black community see a lot of themselves in Mary... and she has a great story.
But her story is better than her talent unfortunately for her Dance... Let me see you dance
