SOOOO SAD over here!!! I should have just let hubby file the divorce papers and kept trying like I wanted to! Yeah, it's that d*mn serious!!! *sniff*
Seriously though, I'm happy for all that went to the second show...that set list was mad love!!! Wonder where I'm gonna have to fly to when I do score the intimate show tickets?

Okay... Anyone who thinks this was a $25 Forum setlist either wasn't at the HOB or was so uptight about the $$ that they couldn't enjoy the show. Y'all should know that you get something different every time with Prince... I went to the first 2 shows, my ears are still ringing....
The main hall show was a dance party.. He did things with DMSR that I don't even think 1/4 of the crowd knew was even going on....
The 2nd show... What can I say? I couldn't even see him, but it might have been the best sounding Prince show I've ever been 2...... Imagine Prince playing in your living room.... Quite insane. I'm not sure what section of the HOB we were in... It wasn't the restaurant, like advertised... But It was pure purple heaven...

Well, what he said was (to paraphrase) "We got three more shows at the Forum, so come see us." Take that for what it's worth. I'm an optimist and I can't believe he meant these are the only three shows left that are coming up. I guess we'll see... but by all accounts there should be two weekends to go. RIGHT? It was a fun time in the Restaurant tonight, but true is the fact that L.A. is a "scene" and people just talked through the entire set. It's like the end of Pink Floyd's Welcome To The Machine where all you hear is people chatter. Really sad, but part of the show. Plus the playing field was all level, so it was really hard to see anything unless a lot of heads moved and you got a quick peek! And I was about 20 feet away. Again, part of the fun - I guess. Annoying were the few people who had to plow their way ahead of you, like they're driving on the freeway. Where do you think you're going? Now you're in front of me instead of behind me. Good for you. Wow. You're really not going to get there any quicker you know. It wasn't a "jazz" set by any means, there was a lot of awesome, hard rocking. I'm a jazz fan but I certainly wasn't disappointed. It really was a good experience. $100 good? No. But, yeah, I'd do it again. That was pretty cool.

Perfect recap of the show... Hard 2 desribe... It was more like just bieng in a small room & listening to Prince take over... Not what I'd call a "Jazz Cafe". Anyone who wants to type up their.. "I'm glad I didn't waste my $$$" or, "It wasn't the Troubadour", ..... Wasn't There.
Another great night by all of our favorite artist.

Now, granted it was my FIRST time seeing PRINCE, but me and my fiance's jaws were on the floor...in awe of a consummate performer doing what he does best. Yes, we waited a little extra. Yes, he could have played longer. But...isn't that the point? "leave them wanting more"
Tonight was a revelation. I am "wanting more". I will be going to as many Forum shows as possible. That's the spirit, I'm glad you guys had such a great time instead of complaining about what you didn't get...and welcome to your new world of Prince concert addiction. THANK U BRONZEFUNK FOR HOOKING A PURPLE SISTER UP 2NITE, I can't WAIT tonhear about 10pm show. Heres the review I just texted to my husband: 9pm band out and jammin' DMSR for like 15 mins. Then Prince about 9:15 til 10:30-10:45. Was like a Forum show but up close and less pageantry more like in a down brother type of mood with a knitted white skull cap on the whole time. Played the hell out of "Let's Work" got DOWN on the bass said "I just wanted to see if it WORKED!" When he came to my side if the stage & shredded the guitar & glanced up I mouthed "thank u" I'm sure he didn't see but i was appreciative. After I got your text I was looking for you... Second show was truly unbelievable. A hardcore Prince fans dream. Let's catch up at The Forum this weekend..

Just got home from second show. My ears are ringing and my feet are still dancing. I expected a slow set and was hoping for a Case of You, but instead he flipped the script on us. I remember thinking at one point, more like a "blues/rock cafe" than "jazz cafe." I too was excited when he started playing "America." I figured it fitting since he started out with the "Star spangled banner", unfortunately he didn't sing it. Shelby's rendition of brown skin was AMAZING, and the LRC perfomance was AWESOME, because it was the crowd and Prince giving and taking.
I was hoping for the troubadour show and I got treated to a great performance and a jovial prince. He was having fun with all of us. Reprimanding us for clapping too early during one of the songs, getting on poor lil Jose, and lecturing us about electing a certain person.
My only complaint is that I could not see him clearly. I am short dammit! I had to stand on my tippy toes and I got to see his face a few times. I had never been to HOB and I didn't know what it all meant when I read the location of the shows. I assumed there would have been an elevated stage and that we would all be able to see him shred the guitar and witness his "guitar face" up close and personal. By the time I got there, there was already a bunch of TALL people near the front. I think next time if we all sit down, we can all see him equally.
All in all I enjoyed it. I am glad I went and glad that I got the experience. After reading that his first setlist was short, I feel very lucky to have gone to the second one. It seemed like he was never gonna stop. I kept thinking he's gonna be up all nite with those charity folks. Only Prince can do this. Make us rearrange our lives in the spur of the moment.
I also heard him say three shows left so come support them. Hope it's not true.
Thanks, Prince! For hanging out with us tonight!!! I like ME

A few people from the Org messaged me about connecting if I want to last night's HOB show and I eff'ed up and forgot to make a call list so to those whom I missed, my apologies.
Got to the HOB when there were less than twenty people in line; the line for the first show was still moving inside. Large mass of people, appeared to be an organized madhouse. HOB staff & security appeared to be well organized and respectful towards patrons. Waited along with a young couple & talked Prince, past concerts, the Forum engagement & NBA basketball. Nice people; they were at least familiar with the Org if not posters because I recognized one of the photos from the 21 night run on his phone.
Doors were scheduled to open at 10pm but they allowed us in early, maybe 9:35 or so. We could hear the early performance through the walls...I heard Musicology & Cool clearly. Entered a room and almost missed the stage because it had almost zero elevation and a large post right in the middle of it...on the stage was a drum kit, keyboards and a couple of Fender amps. Uh oh, I thought...if you aren't right up against the stage you aren't going to see SHIT. And from the other responses appears I was correct. Fortunately for me I was within one row of people from the stage...unfortunately the two guys in front of me were just as tall if not an inch taller than me...so I felt sorry for anyone behind us because they were going to be screwed. That show should have been sold as obstructed view with such a low platform for the artist to play upon and no disrespect, but considering his height...you just couldn't see him from the rear. Weird space for a performance to take place...low ceiling, poor sightlines. But it was small and intimate.
I almost didn't go to the show. The title "Jazz Cafe" threw me off. I didn't want to hear any languid, blase jazz noodling even if it was Prince doing the direction. I was in attendance at the first Troubadour show and while it rocked far harder than it did not, what I wanted was the second set's hard rock extravaganza. I feared that this Jazz Cafe set would not deliver that, so I vacillated on whether or not to go. Ultimately an infusion of cash made it easier for me to absorb the hundred dollar hit so I decided to chance it, hopeful of the best but fearful of the worst.
Boy, am I glad that I did NOT listen to my first mind.
When I heard the music from the first set I had a feeling...sounded very much, as reported, as the standard Forum setlist albeit much clearer, much closer, more intimate. But those are songs I've heard several times over. I was relieved that I didn't lose my mind and pay $200 for that show. I had a feeling, though, that the second set was not going to repeat the hits but instead MIGHT be that power trio trip I've wanted ever since Sonny T and Michael B joined Prince at the Club Nokia a few years back during LotusFlow3r Night. When Prince stepped onto the stage in his black Hendrixian regalia I knew it was going down. This brother was NOT dressed for a dreary jazz lounge act; he came to throw it down. And I was right.
Opened with an off-the-cuff 12 bar blues to "tune up" and get the levels right...then tore into I Like It There. My prayers were answered; looked like I was going to get that setlist from the second Troubadour show. From there:
Endorphinmachine (there were some issues with this; I think Ida's bass went out during the intro so JB played a solo while they worked out the audio issues, then Prince only played the first verse before ending it) Villanova Junction (Hendrix) America (Intro line only) The ? of U/Gingerbread Man/The One Dreamer Welcome 2 America Always In My Hair Bambi Colonized Mind Brown Skin (w/Shelby J) Little Red Corvette
Did I forget something? My list is out of order, I think...I couldn't keep my normal complete notes due to being boxed in like sardines and having too much humanity around me in a confined space. Despite Funkenberry's tweet however, there was no "Star Spangled Banner." I don't believe Prince will play that because of his spiritual beliefs. I am surprised, though, that he will play Bambi given it's salacious subject matter...but I am glad he does.
I saw Prince play Endorphinmachine and Bambi from less than ten feet away. I can now die happy.
My experience was different than some who were in the rear and couldn't see. I feel for you and that's real, no sarcasm. It wasn't fair to charge full price for what must have been a very frustrating experience...to only hear but not see the performance. Least they could have done was had some monitors around so you could see at least an in-house broadcast.
Speechless. Mindblowing. Emotionally stirring.
Had Shelby touched me instead of the guy next to me as she sang Brown Skin...I don't know if I could have handled that because the woman straight tore the roof off of the joint. But that would have just been heaven. [Edited 5/26/11 7:45am]

Great synopsis Ultralash... Second show tonight was a hardcore Prince fan's dream, no filler, not too much Renato noodling, lots of Prince guitar. Best sounding Prince show I've ever been to. Like DaveG said it was like having Prince in your living room, every guitar note, cymbal hit and bass note was crystal clear. Colonized Mind with a Mike Phillips sax solo was off the hook. Welcome 2 America with crowd participation was a highlight. There was one solo, during Bambi, where he really just KILLED it. I've been to 11 Forum shows and listened to the Troubadour show and I think this set has been the highlight of the whole LA run so far... [Edited 5/26/11 4:35am]

Ooops!! Sorry… I was the one of the guys standing in front of you!! But boy am I glad I got to the HOB early! You’re review is spot on…perfect!! Were you the guy I gave a piece of gum to?
Anyways... the "Jazz" show blew me away. Like everyone else I was expecting a jazz set so I was VERY happy to see him play almost the entire show on guitar! He was on fire tonight and had a big smile more than a few times. And yes he seemed to blow up at one of the techs but he went right back into smiley Prince in about 30 seconds. I was right up at the front, standing above the lyrics monitor, and his mic stand was less than three feet away. I've seen Prince play in a club many, many times over the last 20+ years and this one ranks up there at the top with the best of ‘em. I should confess that I'm in heaven watching him play guitar so this set was a damn good surprise and it made my night. I would've been happy with a jazz set but seriously, no one makes a guitar sing like Prince.
There was a technical problem with the house speakers (around the stage) when the band came out so while the techs were fixing it, he began the night with an instrumental blues number that went into his “Jose can you see” rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Now that I think more about it, I wonder if that technical problem swayed him into changing the entire set from jazz to a guitar jam? If so… then I wanna personally thank Jose!!
The show was definitely based on the second Troubadour show and for a while, the lyrics monitor at the foot of the stage showed the actual set list from the second Troubadour show (with "Troubadour" at the top of the list and "I like It There" as the first song). I wasn’t at the Troubadour show so maybe that second late-nite jam was better? I don’t know… but the proximity to the man and the energy up at the front made this an amazing night. After the show, nobody wanted to move and I think most people had a hard time realizing it was over.
So here’s my version of the set list; my memory is crap and I can't remember the exact list of songs so if someone can put this in the correct order, please do so! Plus I think I’m missing one. Maybe with everyone’s help, we’ll have the set list fixed by the time I wake up!
Blues Jam I Like It There Star-Spangled Jose Question of You (with different lyrics? Can someone confirm this or am I crazy?) Gingerbread Man The One Dreamer She's Always in My Hair Endorphinmachine (short instrumental version) Welcome 2 America (with guitar riff from "America" played at the end) Bambi Colonized Mind Brown Skin (Shelby) Little Red Corvette
No Encore.
I know some people are questioning if the shows were worth the price. For the second HOB show, I say YES! From what I heard coming into the restaurant from the main stage (and seeing the set list posted earlier), I think I would’ve been pissed off to pay $200 for basically the same set of songs he plays at the Forum. Sure, seeing him in a club makes a difference but I still don’t get why the first show was $200 and the second show was $100? Both sets were about the same length (2nd show was proabably 10-15 minutes shorter). I miss the days of club shows in LA costing $25 but nowadays, those of us in LA get a chance to pay $25 for an arena show and $100 for a club show and I think it’s a fair trade considering the number of club shows he actually does versus arena shows. However $200? That’s pushing it. He should’ve priced both shows at $100 like the Troubadour.
At the end of the day, whether or not you were happy to see one of the HOB shows tonight at the price you paid, just be happy you got to see him doing what an artist and musician of his caliber does best in a small and intimate setting… how many of the combined 100,000+ fans that have been going to the Forum can say that?

My feelings, my favorite musicians all under one roof! So yes, bummed to the point of tears! Also, not that I need to explain, but I could've been there had TM not screwed me royally at checkout! When you see Larry Mullen Jr, walking past you in parking lot, that's a big deal (for a fan, which I am) and know that your favorite band is there and you can't do anything but READ about it? Yeah...tears of frustration, tears...not OMG, Justin Bieber didn't say hi to me!
