Okay, the energy for this show was amazing, but a little short in my opinion. And yes, I did hear him say, "Cuz it's cold in here." LOL I got tickets extremely late and took a chance driving down from Benicia, where my gf works, and ended up getting off way later than we expected. (I walked aroud the Farmer's market for an hour. Ha Ha) I was checking the Org the whole time thinking that this was going to be the night where he went on super early and we were going to miss the majority of the show. Thankfully, we ended up getting there as LG was ending. We had Upper Level and got upgraded, and it seems just in time as 5 minutes later when I went to get a beer, the table had been taken down.

The acoustics were terrible, and hopefully they will have the sound fixed a bit for Saturday. I saw him on the Musicology tour in SJ in 2004 and I don't remember it being that bad. Sometimes, it got so bad that if I hadn't known all the songs, I wouldn't have been able to tell what he was singing. My gf had to cover her ears during Black Sweat as her ears started to hurt. Making me laugh, was the late teenage girl sitting next to us sleeping while her mom danced the night away.

So, with all that said, we still had a blast! Prince was really into it and he played a good mix of songs. I was disappointed that he put the guitar down for LRC (no solo). Some people may not agree with me, but he didn't play enough guitar for my tastes last night, but that's just me. TBO was on point and he killed it! It was nice to hear the second verses and chorus of RB and WDC also.

The highlight of the night for me though, was an older gentlemen (around early to late 70's it appeared) with some people sitting below us, who I overheard saying was his first time seeing Prince. He didn't appear to know too many off the songs, but he rocked out all night! He got up and danced and even when he was in his seat, he was bobbing his head back and forth and having a great time. During the outro for LGC he said really loudly, "Wow!". I love the diversity at Prince concerts and how everyone is there just to have a great time and dance. Other posters were right about everyone filing out fast though. The arena was emptied by 60-70% in a matter of two minutes. Hopefully, Saturday will be some more die-hards in the crowd. Overall, a great night and I'm glad I took a chance coming down late (even though we didn't get home until almost 1:30). Can't wait until Saturday!

If u and I were just ten feet closer, then I'd make u understand

My principal went last night with her husband, they are in their 60's!! She's awesome...anyway, they were bumped up to VIP table 3 because she had on a "purple hat"!!

She also mentioned that she didn't like the opening act....

Also, at the risk of sounding like an 8 year old--did Prince say 'shit' last night? biggrin Before he went into Raspberry Beret he was doing some shtick about how no one knows the song because it's too old school, and I could have sworn he said, 'We can't play that shit!'

OMG - I thought I was the only one!! I figured I'd misheard him, but looks like a few people heard the same thing wink Not that we care, of course, but all things considered, that's pretty funny giggle

I was in VIP1 last night and had an absolute ball. I realise certain things might be old or repetitive for those that have seen it all before, but I'm just having a heck of a time at these concerts and can't wait to see one more before I fly home on Sunday.

I've never seen Larry live and, despite the sound issues, I really really enjoyed his set. He came into the VIP area later and I got to speak to him, as well as a couple of other members of GCS - very cool.

I'd be very happy to see them open again on Saturday night, but would also be stoked to see the E Family - or anyone, or no one. I'll just be happy to be at the show!! biggrin

After being on the floor/risers for all the shows so far, my ticket for tomorrow night is in the upper section (unless I give into temptation and look for something closer wink), so looking forward at least to a different perspective - even if it is further away.

Thanks to Larry, GCS, NPG, Sheila E and of course PRINCE for another awesome night! heart

I don't know what it is, but I'm meeting the NICEST, COOLEST people from the org. I feel I am very fortunate to have met you in Los Angeles, because the positive energy is what makes the Prince experience so fulfilling. I hope on Saturday that Prince does an After Party Show or appearance and you're able to make it.

I've seen Larry Graham, as most of us have, open for Prince very often and I have to admit I've enjoyed his performances each and every time. The concept of having the Esperanza Spalding's and Janelle Monae's of the world are brilliant, indeed, but in my opinion, they are more like showcase's and don't really fit Prince's vibe. My preference will always be that Prince has no opening act AND starts his shows relatively ontime, or some how, some way, gets the close to original Time to open for him.

Any way, I'm so glad you made it out to the States, safe travels, amazing memories, peace and love to you.

I agree with your assessment of the opening acts, Realtor. I saw Esperanza Spalding open on the 6th and 7th and though I could appreciate her talent, her sound just didn't feel like it fit at a Prince show... to me, at least. I enjoyed seeing them play together, though!

Have you heard anything re: a club date tonight? I keep looking everywhere and can't find a thing. It seems so weird he would have an open night that was forced because of the hockey game and not do a Bay Area club date like he did the Troubador. Please share if you have any thoughts. An event was canceled at the Fillmore, so I keep looking out, but nothing yet apparently.

I would guess that Prince flies to his LA house each night after the show. With a private jet, which removes all the hassles one faces flying commercially and venues right next to airports, it is only about a 50 minute trip. I would guess that Prince will be home in LA after Saturday nights show sooner than I will be at my home in Big Sur. So while it would be great if he played a small venue in the bay area tonight, I kind of doubt it. Hey maybe he will play a surprise gig down here in Big Sur!

Yeah, I definitely hear you. I just kind of figured with the Troubador date and the unexpected San Jose shows that the Bay might also be getting a treat re: a club date. He has a pretty healthy history with small clubs in the Bay and the Fillmore cancelation looked too perfect. But given the lack of any info as of just before 3 in the afternoon, I'm not feeling as confident something will go down. Still hoping!

I attended the prince show and it was very good. The show was short as he played mostly his commecial hits. I did not feel jipped because every perfomance was excellent and done with passion. There were so many highlights but the performance of delirous was "off the chain". The one negative to the show was Larry Graham's LONG performance. He performed for 1 hour SMH! His set should be no more than 20 minutes. The crowd energy was amazing everyone in my section was hyped and several people were up the whole time dancing. I agree with the SJ Merury writer that the 5/19 SJ show was better than Oakland. The arena was full except for the balconies. The reason for the lower attendance at the SJ show compared to the Oakland shows had to do with marketing. There were several radio commercial advertisements ( almost every hour) for the Oakland show but not nearly enough for SJ.

Can't agree with that one... she was so great that she inspired Prince to do the best first half of a show I ever saw of the kid. My wish: the warm ups kick butt so he has to rise to the occasion!

I think P is testing out a 'festival' setlist. 2 nights in a row with the samelist. And festival sets are usually shorter than a headlining set also..

2 cents....

Okay wait....you think SHE (Esperanza Spalding) was the reason that Prince was inspired to do a "best first half of a show" that you saw? I SERIOUSLY doubt that after 30 years of performing live, Prince looks to his opening act to inspire him. But regardless of the disagreed upon premise, I haven't noticed any performances more inspiring than midnight at Troubadour and April 14 at the Forum this year...and I'm not talking for a first half; I'm talking for the duration of the show.

THANK YOU Ladyleap2U for posting real time setlist and review.

Have a great time sitting closer Saturday night and please post your review later since you won't be able to post in real time. Just enjoy being close to Prince. I bet you he will bring it Saturday and tear it up. He's warmed up and ready to bring the fire to ya. I too am used to the music club days and getting those fan tix in the front rows and Prince giving us fams shout outs. Nice memories.

It's really disappointing to hear the SJ crowd's reaction (talking, leaving early). Probably ruined some of the energy for the hardcore fans. Have to say I'm glad and proud LA brings major LOVE to Prince at the Forum. I've been to 6 of the concerts and the crowds give him their rapt attention. I look around and EVERYONE is in their seats, mostly almost always a full house (some nights a bit sparser than others with one night with the black sheets over two Colanade sections), faces directly to the stage, dancing, singing, smiling, screaming. Sometimes the energy is palpable. I have not seen ONE bad crowd at the Forum and Prince has been FEEDING off of it. Last Saturday night I could see him absorbing it and sending it back out to the crowd. Energy was crazy last Saturday the 14th.

I know someone said it's nice not to have to suffer through Inglewood Swingin' and I understand but don't agree. Last Saturday night in LA he TORE UP C-O-O-L before he went into Inglewood Swingin' and I was full throttle into it and up on my broken ankle DANCING. So I understand, because I'm over Purple Rain and I've been over it for years, beautiful song and I know why he HAS to play it and actually it was really beautiful one of those LA nights, but Inglewood Swingin' is fun to me.

You are very welcome. I thought it'd be cool for folks who weren't at the show. I can't wait for tomorrow night...I've seen Prince so many times and it thrills me that his initial stage entry still gives me goosebumps everytime. I wish he'd bring back the fam tickets...atleast for the small venue performances...I prefer them over arenas anytime...even way back in the day.

Cheers to tomorrow night...then flyin' to LA to see him at the Forum on Mem Wknd; can't wait for that either cool

Correct me if I'm wrong smile

I heard it! lol

I always said that Prince never really stopped cursing. He may have curtailed it some, but not altogether. I'm just glad it "slipped" out for confirmation. lol

During the 2002 Celebration, I was talking to a worker in Paisley about the whole A/C fiasco. Those that were there know what I'm talking about. He said that Prince was EXTREMELY upset that it wasn't working, and he was cursing up a storm asking why it wasn't fixed yet, saying "You better get this fucking piece of shit working or you're all fired!" (among other choice words). I asked was he sure he actually said those words, and he said yes. And this was even after his TRC album, and he was almost at the height of his "holier than thou" days. Lol!

He's just done a good job at making the public think he's cleaned his mouth up, but just as he's done on multiple occasions throughout his career, what he portays to the public is something completely different than what he is or does privately.

Haven't posted thoughts about SJ yet, but wanted to chime in about this. After the George Lopez interview where he discussed cursing, I was definitely shocked to hear him drop "shit." Totally caught me off guard.

While I'm writing, I'll add that while I agree with the sentiment that the crowd had weak moments, Sheila E. got an unbelievable reaction. It was awesome to see her in awe of it. I'm surprised an audible wasn't called for her to do "A Love Bizarre" although they were clearly running tight on time. I'm hoping she gets more time to shine Saturday.

I can appreciate not cursing out of respect for the audience; when it prohibits him from performing certain songs it's a bummer, though.

sweething

Here's my review of last night's show.

This was the first show I attended where Prince danced alot. His moves make you smile. Although the show was shorter than the others I've attended, it was a good show, seemed appropriate for the venue and location. All of the acts were good as well; Prince, Sheila E., Shelby J, Liv & Elisa (although no solo by Shelby J, sad ) and the Twinz gave top performances. Larry's set could use some updating but his performance was enjoyable nevertheless.

Yesterday's show was to be a beacon of light, unfortunately, too much going on to really enjoy it like the others.

Seating is sooo important. Last night I tried (at the urging of a friend) upper tier seats -- not my thing -- not because I'm a seat snob, but for reasons like the fact that a group came in after the show started and tried to fit 3 extra people into the number of seats they were allotted...this wouldn't have been that bad but two of those people stunk like they hadn't bathed in a week, yes, no exaggeration there, everyone in our row was livid! Of course they were right in front of me. To further add insult to injury, they were "smoking" constantly and whatever it was they were smoking sure didn't smell like your basic garden variety maryjane-yuck!.

The HP Pavillion's sound was horrible. LG's singer souded like she was screetching into the microphone, not good. The song lyrics/vocals were hard to hear over the sound.

The crowd was--different from the other venues and not as fun as the other venues, in my opinion. (sorry San Jose, nothing personal).

It doesn't seem that Prince is on a campaign to eliminate profanity; he just has made a commitment to not use profane language in his songs and asks that artist that perform with him do the same. His "rehab joke/comments" at his shows illustrate he has a self-awareness of his internal struggle, so all in all, it appears Prince is not trying to make the public think anything.

Btw, I've heard the same thing (about him cursing people out), so his treatment of people in private might not catch up to the respectfull way he's attempting to curtail the presentation of his music. The Celebration experience was soooo fun.

Those pictures look awesome! I'm really curious how much he mixes up the setlist tomorrow. In a lot of ways I'm surprised Thursday got the same hits set as Fresno as I would've guessed he'd experiment a bit Thurs. and bring the hits Saturday. Despite having been fortunate to see a lot of dates on this tour, I'm still damn near as excited as if it was my first time. It's a great feeling.

Also, I posted about this in the "Fan Gathering" forum and hope moderators/orgers won't mind me dropping a little reminder here. It seems pretty relevant to Bay Area fans' interests. July 1st at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, Apollonia is going to be attending a Purple Rain screening. I've attended previous years and it is always an awesome party. Here is a link: http://www.peacheschrist.com/?p=8535

Once again, apologies if it's inappropriate to mention here. Just figured Bay Area orgers would be interested.

Felt I actually should post a review on this show with some stats that might help others as far as getting tickets. Lets see… lets start with the good. There are MANY seats still available for Saturdays show. When we arrived tonight at 7:30 I had no tickets and the box office was still packed with seats. They had to relocate 1800 people because huge black curtains were hung around the balcony sections to squeeze the place down some. For $25 there were lodge seats all over and for $49 we sat section 116 row 3 seats 1-2. Great seats! The box office said its about the same for tomorrow night. These were the same seats that were going for $149.

I think if Prince sat on the stage and picked his toes for an hour singing cream it would still be a better show than most and a good time. What I mean is every Prince show even when you know the setlist is a good show. He hit the stage around 10 and was up for it! He didn’t mail in any performances and the addition of Beautiful Ones was very nice, he did handle that song well and his falsetto was nice and full. The show was short but clean and upbeat. A good show.

Now the bad…. I would have to say the sound at the pavilion is famous for being horrid and tonight it lived up to and exceeded its infamous reputation. The first half of the opening the mics were screaming feedback and I could just imagine P back there delivering a verbal a$$ whoopin. The sound in general even during P was just subpar, mottled, and shrill. I suspect he will tune it some so at least it’s a little better for Sat.

Jesus I hate to jump on the wagon but Larry Graham…cmon man…cmon man its enough. His set mixed with the sound was a nightmare. We had to leave as it seemed it was never going to end. I appreciate the funk but its bad enough when P is doing covers, but to sit and listen to Larry hack at covers was ridiculous. And for over an hour. I hope the E family shows up for you guys on Sat because I can get that performance on Telegraph St.

And the San Jose crowd. How do I explain it I know I’m going to catch fire. I’ve lived here for 30+ years and San Jose is a distinct place. Its not an Oakland crowd that’s for sure. I have never seen and heard so many people talking during musical moments just a different crowd. On the encore where P was going to come back out and was gauging the audience the whole place left…I mean in like one or two minutes never seen anything like it…they just left. The whole place was empty. That sort of sums that up.

After the 3 Oakland shows, after the Thursday Oakland show you kind of have to empty out some before going into a hits show. I was hoping for some of that truth he sprayed out in an all-star religious experience but it was not there. It was a good time and well worth $40. Hope Sat is hotter.

lol

Can you imagine if he came back out to do an encore and looked around and it was empty?

eek confuse shrug

To say that everyone left before the last encore KISS is an extreme statement. Yes there were a lot of people that did leave before the last encore but they were outnumbered by the ones stll there. Every show I've attended I saw people leave before it was over. I think a lot people are not aware of how Prince does his shows.

I was seated on the floor and they wouldn't have let me stay even if I wanted to... and I most definitely did want to! One of the ushers came up and asked me to get out of my seat just a few minutes after 'Kiss' ended. I think the behavior of the venue staff partially explains the mass exodus of the crowd so soon after the show ended.

Dave stay's in The Bay, I wonder if he's got a place out here...the guy behind Dave Chappelle in the black hoodie and black hat is Goapele's brother, co owner of the New Parysh (where Dave frequently performs).

I was a bit dissapionted with the energy from the crowd on Thursday night! After going to 2 shows in Oakland ,I can tell you that Oakland knows how to get down! Maybe because it was during the week? Still I danced (as much as I could without bothering those around me) my a** off! Then when Dave Chappelle came and stood near us all I could do was laugh remembering his skit about Charlie Murphy and Prince!! "shoot the J...shoot" razz

Come 2 me, ravish me, liberate me mind.
