Ok, so never posted a review b4, so here goes....
Graham central supported, although good set ...really wanted someone else to be honest!
Prince finally arrived at 10pm and several encores, which started an hr into his set...thankyou and good night I seem to remember starting at 11pm and then we had 45mins of on-off-on...awesome gig though and really high tempo this one, with loads of energy and some fantastic performances...The beautiful ones in full being my stand out! just over too damn quick....he was gone by 1:40 and lights up...waited for 10mins but pretty much the place was empty!
to the best of my knowledge..
1999 Little red Corvette Beautiful ones Glamourous Life (sheila E rising with drums and sticks in hand, great reception). Take me with U... Rasberry B....in Full Cream Don't stop/Cool Lets work U Got the look
Encore:
Purple Rain Let's go Crazy/Delirious
Encore Medley: When Doves cry/Nasty girl/SOTT/BGITH/Darling Nikki/Black sweat/Hot thing (in full, with whole crowd waving Cell phones, highlight of medley)/I would die 4 U
If I was you GF
encore: Kiss
Bring on Saturday....

Felt I actually should post a review on this show with some stats that might help others as far as getting tickets. Lets see… lets start with the good. There are MANY seats still available for Saturdays show. When we arrived tonight at 7:30 I had no tickets and the box office was still packed with seats. They had to relocate 1800 people because huge black curtains were hung around the balcony sections to squeeze the place down some. For $25 there were lodge seats all over and for $49 we sat section 116 row 3 seats 1-2. Great seats! The box office said its about the same for tomorrow night. These were the same seats that were going for $149.
I think if Prince sat on the stage and picked his toes for an hour singing cream it would still be a better show than most and a good time. What I mean is every Prince show even when you know the setlist is a good show. He hit the stage around 10 and was up for it! He didn’t mail in any performances and the addition of Beautiful Ones was very nice, he did handle that song well and his falsetto was nice and full. The show was short but clean and upbeat. A good show.
Now the bad…. I would have to say the sound at the pavilion is famous for being horrid and tonight it lived up to and exceeded its infamous reputation. The first half of the opening the mics were screaming feedback and I could just imagine P back there delivering a verbal a$$ whoopin. The sound in general even during P was just subpar, mottled, and shrill. I suspect he will tune it some so at least it’s a little better for Sat.
Jesus I hate to jump on the wagon but Larry Graham…cmon man…cmon man its enough. His set mixed with the sound was a nightmare. We had to leave as it seemed it was never going to end. I appreciate the funk but its bad enough when P is doing covers, but to sit and listen to Larry hack at covers was ridiculous. And for over an hour. I hope the E family shows up for you guys on Sat because I can get that performance on Telegraph St.
And the San Jose crowd. How do I explain it I know I’m going to catch fire. I’ve lived here for 30+ years and San Jose is a distinct place. Its not an Oakland crowd that’s for sure. I have never seen and heard so many people talking during musical moments just a different crowd. On the encore where P was going to come back out and was gauging the audience the whole place left…I mean in like one or two minutes never seen anything like it…they just left. The whole place was empty. That sort of sums that up.
After the 3 Oakland shows, after the Thursday Oakland show you kind of have to empty out some before going into a hits show. I was hoping for some of that truth he sprayed out in an all-star religious experience but it was not there. It was a good time and well worth $40. Hope Sat is hotter.

The backup singers did Make You Feel My Love after U Got The Look, otherwise that setlist is correct. It was the same as Fresno except he added Glamorous Life and did not do Play That Funky Music and Controversy with Housequake chant.

San Jose sounds like a good place. How can people talk during a concert?

No, Oakland crowds were on fire. I did notice, however, on this tour usually P's concerts are much better the second or third night in a new arena. It was like that for NJ and Oakland. Hoping he pours it on in LA Memorial Day weekend! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Even though it seems a little short, you guys got a "Beautiful Ones" and didn't have to suffer through "Inglewood Swingin."

Pretty much agree with DarkWater. I don't mind seeing Larry Graham, but an encore for an opening act? His set was overly drawn out and the sound wasn't good.
Re: the San Jose crowd -- definitely not Oakland! I too was surprised but how fast they cleared out. In fairness though, about 10 minutes after the show ended security was shooing us off the floor so they could get ready for tomorrow's Sharks game. As if I care
Nonetheless, there still isn't anywhere I'd rather be than a Prince concert so bring on Saturday's show! And even more, bring on Memorial Day weekend at the Forum!
Also, had the great luck to be seated next to a fellow Orger last night! Had a great time talking to you, man, and see you in LA!!!

Also, at the risk of sounding like an 8 year old--did Prince say 'shit' last night? Before he went into Raspberry Beret he was doing some shtick about how no one knows the song because it's too old school, and I could have sworn he said, 'We can't play that shit!'
I also thought I heard him make a comment about us being in an ice hockey rink--during 'C.O.O.L' he said, 'San Jose, are you hot?' (No) 'Do you know why? 'Cuz it's cold in here!'
Correct me if I'm wrong | |

Agree with most
First off, Larry Graham's set was an absolute buzz kill! 1 hour late; way too long of set and we are all TIRED OF HEARING THE SAME DAMN THING! I had to go out in the lobby....I didn't enjoy it AT ALL
We got upgraded from upper to 106, very happy and my kids were too (their 1st show).
Prince was great as always, but show didn't compare to Oakland and the crowd didn't either. My highlight was HOT THING (sang most of it).......... Again, it was well worth $28 and he was awesome but I can name about 10-12 more songs he sang at the Oakland show....
it's all good though! [Edited 5/20/11 7:23am] "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

I agree with both responses. I'm really hoping for the "E" Family to open tomorrow night; if not, I'll be seated realllllly late.
Prince was up for it no matter if there were 1000 folks in the house, but agreed, SJ crowd definitely not an Oakland crowd. I was able to text and not miss a beat in the show (I see I made several typos though lol), and yes, Prince would've come back out, but like Dark Water said, folks just up and scurried out. That's when ALL of the house lights came on.
With that said, Prince performed well. His vocals were on point especially during the treat of The Beautiful Ones. If he only played that song, I would've been satisfied; therefore, the rest of the show was an added treat
This is first time that we sat as far away from the stage as we did. Initially, we had upper level, so I can't imagine being up there and now I know I won't purchase for upper level again. I'm spoiled from the fan club days and before---within the 1st - 10 rows from the stage.
Looking forward to tomorrow night...

I live here in the bay area but will have to skip sj gigs. The sound is beyond bad at HP. That & I'm officially ruined after the epic troubador show . Hope he tears it up for ya'll saturday.

Me too and that is why I got on a plane to LA. Nothing like seeing P in LA.

THANK YOU Ladyleap2U for posting real time setlist and review.
Have a great time sitting closer Saturday night and please post your review later since you won't be able to post in real time. Just enjoy being close to Prince. I bet you he will bring it Saturday and tear it up. He's warmed up and ready to bring the fire to ya. I too am used to the music club days and getting those fan tix in the front rows and Prince giving us fams shout outs. Nice memories.
It's really disappointing to hear the SJ crowd's reaction (talking, leaving early). Probably ruined some of the energy for the hardcore fans. Have to say I'm glad and proud LA brings major LOVE to Prince at the Forum. I've been to 6 of the concerts and the crowds give him their rapt attention. I look around and EVERYONE is in their seats, mostly almost always a full house (some nights a bit sparser than others with one night with the black sheets over two Colanade sections), faces directly to the stage, dancing, singing, smiling, screaming. Sometimes the energy is palpable. I have not seen ONE bad crowd at the Forum and Prince has been FEEDING off of it. Last Saturday night I could see him absorbing it and sending it back out to the crowd. Energy was crazy last Saturday the 14th.
I know someone said it's nice not to have to suffer through Inglewood Swingin' and I understand but don't agree. Last Saturday night in LA he TORE UP C-O-O-L before he went into Inglewood Swingin' and I was full throttle into it and up on my broken ankle DANCING. So I understand, because I'm over Purple Rain and I've been over it for years, beautiful song and I know why he HAS to play it and actually it was really beautiful one of those LA nights, but Inglewood Swingin' is fun to me.

Agreed, Larry is getting a bit tiresome...Was amazing experience when I first saw him supporting Prince and Brixton academy in 98....but 13yrs on am somewhat tired of it, spent at least half hr in the bar for this one

Prince and larry should consider adding some new songs to larry's setlist to keep things more interesting. Stuff that larry featured on like Glasscutter and Peace and then do some completely new songs and something off GCS2000. I'd be more than happy to have that as a warm up. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

OMG - I thought I was the only one!! I figured I'd misheard him, but looks like a few people heard the same thing Not that we care, of course, but all things considered, that's pretty funny
I was in VIP1 last night and had an absolute ball. I realise certain things might be old or repetitive for those that have seen it all before, but I'm just having a heck of a time at these concerts and can't wait to see one more before I fly home on Sunday.
I've never seen Larry live and, despite the sound issues, I really really enjoyed his set. He came into the VIP area later and I got to speak to him, as well as a couple of other members of GCS - very cool.
I'd be very happy to see them open again on Saturday night, but would also be stoked to see the E Family - or anyone, or no one. I'll just be happy to be at the show!!
After being on the floor/risers for all the shows so far, my ticket for tomorrow night is in the upper section (unless I give into temptation and look for something closer ), so looking forward at least to a different perspective - even if it is further away.
Thanks to Larry, GCS, NPG, Sheila E and of course PRINCE for another awesome night!

Larry was beyond TERRIBLE. Just God Awful. I had to leave due to the sound being wicked crap. Saw dozens fo people leaving their seats to escape from this insanely dumb opening act. Blech!
First time in the purple pit and I hated it. The sound at HP is terrible and I just hope its a little bit better in the loge seats. My experience in LA in loge 36 was so much better, both for view/sight and sound.
I have 4 purple pit tickets for Saturday and I am contemplating switching over to lower section seats. just can't spend the money right now.
The show was a greatest hits which is fine for the more casual fan and am not going to complain at all about that. Just hope he mixes it up on Saturday and is ready to throw some bones to the diehards from the Bay Area.
Props for the HP parking lots ... very easy to get in and out.
$9.25 beers.... If I can't figure out how to switch my 4 purple pit tickets to lower section seats I might just have to bring in a flask. No way I am going to be happy behind the stage looking at the butt of a mediocre bassplayer with a bad sound system, P doing samples (wtf?!?) and crappy expensive beer.
For sure not the best Prince concert experience in the last 24 years I have been seeing him.
And ladies... bring a sweater... it's COLD in there. I don't mind seeing peanut smugglers all night but its chilly if you don't dance your socks off

Hearing Prince curse makes you realize how good he is at NOT cursing--it sticks out like a sore thumb
Your attitude about the shows is great. I'd personally rather be at a 90 minute all-hits show than sitting on my damn couch watching TV, which is what I would have been doing if I hadn't gone last night. It also makes me realize how fortunate I've been to see some deeper cuts performed in Oakland and the Forum, and all within the span of a few months. I personally feel spoiled to death by the man!
