Last year, it got so bad in the Phish community, that the band had to stream their New Years run from NYC (right after Prince played MSG on the 29th). I was there, but lot's of people got to stay home and watch it.

This all started like 2 years ago. The legal tapers are even providing high quality audio nearly every night.

Pretty decent all-in-all. It took me back to the early days. At least the stream stayed intact. There weren't thousands of people trying to listen.

I guess the challenge is how to sell the live experience and not a copy of the live experience!? I was listening with intensity to the last bit of the streaming - now I'm listening to the recorded show. I'm still super amazed by the music, but not in the same way as if it was live in the moment. But maybe that's just me... I like the exclusive and present feeling, the in-the-moment feeling, the you-have-to-be-here feeling - even if that means sitting in front of my computer screen.

But you're right, there is a problem with greedy copy & sell it people. And there's also the challenge of different time zones if ever a live streaming concert project took place...

Funny you said that - I thought the exact same thing. This experience took me back to the early days and even earlier. Does anyone remember when the local radio station would broadcast a concert? And you'd sit w/in earshot the radio and listen so intently? Tonight brought back a lot of those memories.

That is something that has definately been lost....and not for the better. An on-air concert was a thing of glory. That's how you used to pick up Soundboard boots. Chilling with a tape deck at the ready! There's no work anymore. It's all just "there".

Sounds was surprisingly decent if it was really just you and an iPhone... I'd put it as an average-ish audience boot, some parts were better than others. Not the best I've ever heard but by FAR not the worst either! (I do NOT at all mean that as a criticism or "why didn't it sound better" -- I am BLOWN AWAY by what you pulled off and very, very grateful!)

I definitely agree that the immediacy and knowing this was the show LIVE really added a lot. It sounded like a great show and it was great to be able to sort of be there without being there.

(and I totally miss the days of getting live concerts over the radio... it happens occasionally still but it's extremely rare... I still have some pretty cool tapes from over the years (no P though), I should probably go through them and make sure I know what I even have and try to get the better stuff to CD/archived to HD..)
