START TIME? Hi. Going to my first Forum show tonight. Well, second if you count the Purple Rain tour...and I do! Wondering what the actual start times have been. I've seen a few 8:30's here and there. Is that about right? So excited! Taking the family...MY family, not "The Family" (but wouldn't that be a hoot?) See y'all tonight! JD

JD I've only got last night to go on, but Chaka hit the stage at 8:30 and Prince at 9:30. Since this is my first visit to L.A., I allowed way too much time for traffic and arrived at 6:45. I had a long, boring wait.

Just called ticketmaster the old fashioned way - on a phone - and requested a ticket in the exact section I wanted (loge 28) and got it! BTW - all remaining tickets are $25 - if you live anywhere near the forum - I recommend getting your butt there to watch Prince shake his! The white furry high-heeled red light up boots are worth the price of admission alone.

Prince popped up outta nowhere to play along with Esperanza then magically disappeared... [Edited 5/6/11 22:44pm] The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Prince was not in gold....all black with a black hat low on his face, gold chain on. He was jamming and staring at her intensely....the looks between them were magic! Really amazing

I just came back from the concert and it was very very good. First third even better than three weeks ago when I went.
Sheila E played percussion on about half the songs in the show! She's amazing!
Setlist;
Laydown She's Always In My Hair Future Soul Song Purple Rain The Glamourous Life (Sheila E; without Prince) Raspberry Beret Cream Cool/Don't Stop Til You Get Enoigh Let's Work U Got The Look Misty Blue (Shelby J.) When Doves Cry Nasty Girl Sign O The Times The Most Beautiful Girl In The World Darling Nikki I would Die 4 U Hot Thing Alphabet St A Love Bizarre Play That Funky Music Controversy
Encore 1 Kiss/Fantastic Voyage
Encore 2 If I Was Your Girlfriend Nothing Compares 2 U
Encore 3 Inglewood Swinging
An amazing concert and I'm very happy with the selection of the first few songs and the rest was very very good too. Crowd seemed more into it than three weeks ago.
Probably going next Friday as well

It was my 7th show. This was the first one where I wasn't surprised by anything he chose to play. I'm still hoping for I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man. He seemed to actually sing more of Raspberry Beret and Doves. And he played the bass during Kiss. [Edited 5/7/11 1:50am]

And just like that, our favorite Purple Yoda is back. Wow. Whatever ailed him last night was exorcised and he was back in superb form tonight.
Show started very late...Esperanza Spalding came on around 8:40pm...her set suffered from a poor mix from where I sat...her singing was drowned out by her overmixed bass & band...P came out and played with her on an old Jacksons tune, "Can't Help It." Very cool. She's great.
Prince comes on around 10pm...setlist:
Laydown Always In My Hair Future Soul Song Purple Rain Glamorous Life Raspberry Beret Cream Cool w/ Don't Stop Interpolation & Sheila E Let's Work U Got The Look Misty Blue
Samples:
When Doves Cry Nasty Girl Single Ladies Sign O' The Times The Most Beautiful Girl In The World Darling Nikki I Would Die 4 U Hot Thing Alphabet Street
A Love Bizarre Love Rollercoaster (riff) Play That Funky Music Controversy
Kiss If I Was Your Girlfriend Nothing Compares 2 U
Inglewood Swingin'
A very hot show...tight, no fluff or filler. Began in outstanding fashion and did not let up. Not quite as long as some recent shows which may be for the better...a tight, full two hours is still a very generous show. Prince's voice did not appear to be as strong as it has been and some may chastise him for that or cite it as evidence that he's not what he used to be, which I believe would be erroneous and unfair. If he took some vocal shortcuts on a few tracks, he more than made up for it with an energetic performance complete with hellified guitar playing, dancing and crowd involvement. Far less of the self-consciousness I described in last night's show re the Purple Pit. Yes, P and the band made it back there and got them involved but it didn't feel as forced. I don't want to dwell on it or speculate as to why but suffice to say, whatever was the issue last night did not affect tonight's performance and I had a grand time. So cool. He was due for one off-night out of nine thus far.
Unusual to hear Purple Rain so early in the set but I loved it and thought the set benefitted from its placement. He played the hell out of it. Future Soul Song was especially good to me tonight; not as mellow as when he played it on Thursday 4/22, and that performance was sublime...tonight's had a little more foot in it, if you will. Both interpretations were great.
Not much more to add...the show flowed very well tonight, had a great rhythm and the energy never let up. My faith has been restored...but it never really waned. Looking forward to tomorrow night.

I just left the Forum Club. It amazes me how people lack patience. Most of the earlier post-concert crowd bailed early leaving the die-hards. As soon as a large group appeared to leave en masse (during Esperanzas playing) P appeared looking refreshed and ready to groove. With babies at home, I had to leave the club as he walked on stage. Any one else there?
