That damn EVO.... I got great pics and video with mine... but, in true EVO fashion when using it's features, it didn't last the whole night in Columbia. At the end of the Columbia concert, Prince stood at the front of the arrow posing and taking a bow for almost a minute. It was a prime opportunity to get some incredible final shots. But, the phone had died...
Partially my own fault too, because I used the EVO GPS to find the venue and forgot to disable GPS when I got there. Disabling WIFI and GPS when not in use preserves battery life. Otherwise, it kills the battery while continuing to search for a WIFI or GPS signal.

Charleston got the memo and we all pretty much stayed until the hardhats came in to take down the stage...
Also I am convinced the people behind me last night hate me... I was up all night and they were sitting down and couldn't see because I had on heels. I didn't really care.. I was having a blast... I've officially purified myself in the waters of lake minetonka (i.e. go to my first Prince concert) and I am now completely hooked.... Here's a review from the local paper: http://www.postandcourier...coliseum2/
REVIEW: The Purple One reigns supreme at North Charleston Coliseum
More than a few folks walking through Wednesday night's rain to the North Charleston Coliseum wondered aloud whether that precipitation should be purple.
Music legend Prince brought his Welcome 2 America tour to the Lowcountry, less than three weeks after the six-date trek through the Carolinas was first announced. The North Charleston show was the final one on this leg of the tour.
Prince last played Charleston on Dec. 11, 1980, at the Gaillard Auditorium downtown while touring in support of his third album, "Dirty Mind." In the three decades since that last royal visit, Prince hasn't exactly been slacking off.
He has released more than 30 albums of music, won numerous awards, including multiple Grammys and an Oscar, and has starred in several films, most notably the 1984 movie "Purple Rain."
After a beautiful, jazz-infused opening set by singer Lalah Hathaway, Prince took to the stage with his band, which included drummer John Blackwell, a Columbia native. The stage was shaped like the unpronounceable symbol that Prince insisted on being identified by for much of the '90s, before reverting to Prince in 2000.
The runways created by the stage's shape allowed the artist to roam around the performance space, getting him closer to his fans.
The audience was on its feet from the opening song and rarely sat down as Prince worked his musical magic.
For fans of Prince's back catalog, the Welcome 2 America Tour has proven to be a goldmine of classic Prince songs, and Wednesday night's show was no exception.
Opening with an abbreviated version of "Let's Go Crazy," Prince blazed through an impressive list of hits that included "Delirious," "1999," and "Little Red Corvette." Additional songs performed ranged from old favorites, such as "D.M.S.R." and "Pop Life," to more recent compositions, such as "Musicology" and more obscure tunes, such as "Extraordinary."
While the stage was situated at one end of the coliseum's floor, a change from earlier shows where it sat in the middle of the venue, the runway that formed the lower end of the Prince symbol jutted out toward the center of the floor, ensuring that even fans on the opposite side of the building were able to get just a little closer to their idol.
Prince's band, who in addition to Blackwell comprised Ida Nielsen, Morris Hayes, Renato Neto, Cassandra O'Neal, Shelby J., Elisa Dease and Liv Warfield, did a spectacular job of moving back and forth across the timeline of Prince's musical career.
The band kept pace with Prince, who even at age 52 shows no sign of slowing down as a performer.
Whether hitting one of his trademark high notes or unleashing a blistering guitar solo, The Purple One spent all of Wednesday night reminding the crowd of about 12,000 why he is one of the most popular and respected artists of the last quarter-century.

Ahhh, so glad you had a funky time. I love hearing "first timer" stories. The only bad thing about it, as you now know, you are addicted and will do whatever you can to find another Prince show to go to. LOL I have, in the past 4 months, driven from NC to NY (8 and 1/2 hour drive) to see him at MSG, driven 1 hour (not an issue at all) to see him in Raleigh, and driven 3 hours to see him in Greensboro. Purchaced VIP for two of the three shows...thank God for tax returns!!!! LOL I still want more simply because he is SUCH a fabulous performer, and it also has a little to do with the fact that he is my favorite singer/artist since I was 7 years old. And of course, all that sexiness. hehehe So glad to hear you had a blast. -you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude!

Somebody said he played Peach, I don't see that on the list?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I was there right in front of the piano in the vip section with my sister. He did play peach, an extended version... this was the best performance I have ever seen him do live!! I was standing next to a girl at our table, we were right next to the stage... he came over there and shook her hands and was smiling at her. He was about two feet in front of me. I was amazed at how good and healthy he looked! He was dancing like a twenty year old! At first he was wearing his comfy shoes but after his first or second costume change he had his high heel shoes on.
The place went crazy all night long!! I was about 10 feet from his guitars!! I was right next to the thing that blew all the confetti out during purple rain.
There was a girl that had a bald head, and he got her on stage to dance and joked around with Shelby saying that her sister was in the house! lol
L. Hathaway kicked it last night!! And Shelby put on quite a performance herself!! When she was asking if there was a man in south carolina for her during Misty Blue, my sister told me later that she was pointing at my head the whole time!! lol.......
If he comes to your town... do NOT miss this concert!!! It was straight up funky, rockin', pop and alllll Prince!! If you get vip tickets, make sure you don't have a bad back... the chairs in Charleston were very uncomfortable.. but then again, I've got two herniated discs... He said at the end of Purple Rain that we all would feel really good in the morning. I am not too bad and there was no way in hell I was missing this!!

Last night's show was amazing. I went to three of the six Carolinas dates and only the Charlotte show was better (lotsa deep, deep tracks and great covers) than the Charleston show.
I think what really told me that this was going to be a special show was when Layla Hathaway covered her daddy's epic "A Song For You." I saw her when she opened for Prince at the IZOD back in December and I can say that I am glad that I saw her at the end of this Carolinas leg. Shelby doing "Misty Blue" was incredible as well.
Three encores like Columbia but this show was just better. Better crowd energy even though I was asked not to stand up and dance by the lames behind me.
Prince said he will have more dates around the country. It seems I will have to dig deep in my thread bare pockets to see him again. Until then, I will keep myself content by listening to "One Night Alone" and "Xenophobia 2002."
I was never the biggest fan of "Let's Work" but after hearing it live at three different shows, I can say that I have moved it up into my first tier of Prince favorites. Hearing "Sometimes It Snows In April" was quite moving for me last night as well. Can't explain it.

Hi saw the show and we got our camera in ok (initially told no cameras then told hide in pocket as only bags were searched) got some good shots but felt at any time we'd get a tap on our sholders. The security didn't say anything or take any ones cameras off them. We were in the VIP seats 6 rows back fantastic view, still on a high it was fantastic better than the 02 shows we saw. Got my leggins so well chuffed about that as well as a hat, tee & tamborine been after one of those for ages but in UK could never afford one saying as holiday it was a treat!
It was awesome seeing Prince in the USA the crowd and atmos were electric having said that wish he would do an arena tour in the UK & come to Newcastle.
A lady we spoke to at South West Airlines said Prince was back 2 Charleston in December, how she heard this I don't know, rumours I guess??
