he wasn't? hmmmm did u hear any of his material on the radio during this time that was his new material sans musicology and call my name? did u happen 2 see any of his videos in regular rotation anymore during this time?

Gotta love the Org! You do realize that we're talking about the 90's, and Musicology and Call My Name came out in the 2000's? disbelief ANYWAY, during the 90's Prince was on more late-night talk shows than any time in the 80's. No his videos nor his new music weren't in heavy rotation but that wasn't because he was blacklisted it was because it was the times. Hip-Hop and grunge were the dominant music genres so of course Prince and 80's artists in general got less airtime. Prince did Oprah for the first time in the 90's. Prince had VH-1 specials in the 90's. Everyone talked about Symbolina, Squiggly and TAFKAP in the 90's. He wasn't blacklisted.....he just started to suck!

granted after emancipation is started getting rough but what's the excuse of not performing more 90's material and current in concert these days? this was a man who came out with a new album and tour and pimped that shit 2 the max like any artist would when they have new product out ..not relegate it like it's some taboo shit.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The 90s has his best music in my opinion. I liked him in the 80s but the 90s stuff blew me away!! It was his best stuff hands down to me. I hate its all lost in Prince's eyes and he wont play it. Hell, he wont even play the 2000's stuff. It must really suck to be hi mand have to play the same ol songs night in and night out. I know I hate playing the same stuff and wont. I understand why he doesnt tour much anymore. It HAS TO BE boring for him.

I like all of his periods, but the 90's? What? Let me guess...you liked Tony M so much, that the 90's had to win out? Just kidding, but the fact that Tony M exists gives the 90's a big big ugly pimple that brings down the DAP and Symbol albums for me, and the tours themselves...with Tony M, Damon D, and Kirk J wearing those damb Star Trek Next Generation uniforms.... Don't get me wrong, there a bunch of great 90's songs...but I can give 5 good reasons no decade will beat the 80's:

1. When Doves Cry 2. If I Was Your Girlfriend 3. Anna Stesia 4. Old Friends 4 Sale(original unreleased version.) 5. The Beautiful Ones

As far as him not touring much anymore....let's see: 2004: Long Musicology Tour, 2006: the useless Tamar tour, a few Vegas shows. 2007: A lot of Vegas shows, and the 21 Nights in London. 2009: A few shows in Europe, and Los Angeles. 2010: A decent amount of European shows, and New York/New Jersey. 2011: New York, North and South Carolina, and unconfirmed info about Atlanta, Tampa, and Nashville. (Don't ask me who told me, because if the shows don't happen...it is just typical Prince who changes his mind every five minutes)

I'd rather see Prince have an all-star type band with members of bands from every era. When hard core fans were begging for a Revolution reunion, Prince put a message on his website that said..."Revolutions only happen once." Some witty fan had a great comeback, which I will have to paraphrase...but said something to the effect of "How long can Power Generations be New." And here it is 2011, and at the Carolina shows, he was still calling his band the "New Power Generation." Mr Hayes is the closest thing to the old band still around, and he is not even allowed on stage anymore. He's hidden away in the back in one of the oddest locations for a keyboard player I have ever seen.

And my all-star band:

Miko Weaver, Wendy Melvoin, Vernon Reid(why not?)-Guitar

Sonny T: Bass

Lisa Coleman, Matt Fink, Renato Neto: Keyboards/Pianos

Sheila E, John Blackwell: Drums & Percussion

Greg Boyer: Trombone

Atlanta Bliss: Trumpet

Eric Leeds: Sax

Special note: Since I can dream here, the horn section would be present on songs with horn parts only, or songs that an added horn part fits well on. For example, DMSR had the keyboards playing horn sounding parts, but real horns sound great on it as well. Let's Go Crazy had something like 4 saxaphone solos on it on the musicology tour, depending on who was there each night, and the song was not written with horns in mind.

okay ..songs can be done from both dap and prince without doing the parts tony m were involved in and there were plenty of albums past tony m that can be chosing as well. ur 5 reasons or songs that say no other decade will top imo is skeptical ..i love when doves cry so i'll agree with u on that and every other song u mentioned are some of my favorites sans the beautiful ones, electric intercourse 2 me will always be superior 2 that song but i digress...days of wild is my anthem, joy in repetion is superior 2 old friends 4 sale tho again i love that version u listed as well..the song 7, billy jack bitch, gold. so i guess in the end it's still about the lack of songs in his current sets that are missing and could introduce other casual fans into searching out these songs and discovering another world of prince music than the 80's.

Nice point. I guess I was arguing that the mere fact that Tony M was even there taints the 90's and possibly Prince's entire career. Stevie Wonder and Elton John wouldn't have let that guy near them. I guess I am pissed that Prince's recent concerts were nearly always 1980-1991. "Shh" is one of the few exceptions. "Elixir" was played for a few moments in Charlotte, I think. I still think the 6 Carolina shows were great...too short, but still great.

Okay, that doesn't make any sense. JIR is an 80s song. It may have been "released" in 1990, but it's almost unanimously looked at as am 80s sons. So, thanks for helping to prove the point that the 80s shit all over any other of his decades! lol

there are some great songs in the 90s...and in the 2000's there's some really good stuff...problem is that Prince hasn't played much of these at all since then....so they aren't familiar to anyone except us...

some of that is Prince's fault, some of that isn't....I can't remember the last time I heard anything other than Prince's 80's stuff on the radio...cos the radio is owned by the big record companies - they pay what to play...and Prince doesn't have pockets deep enough to compete with that...

so - he kinda has a problem there...if he was the artist he says he is, he'd have more balls and do the shows HIS way - as he did in the 90's... but even then his fans were getting thinner and thiner on the ground...not totally because of the new material I might add...

to me he lost himself in the 90s.......there were many reasons for that...personal and industry related...I think he came down to earth in a huge hurry...and while he didn't show it on the outside...he internalised a lot of it

in the past, Prince changed his image with every album and with every tour came a new show with mainly new music...that hasn't happened for about 10 years....the last tour which focused mainly on new material was the One Night Alone tour - in 2001/2002...since then we've had a lot of cool shows to look at - the Musicology Tour was a great spectacle...21 Nights in London was even better...but the setlist hasn't really changed too much since 2003-2010 - and remember in 2004 he was playing his hits for the last time!!! LOL...yeh..ok...)

maybe Prince will do something new in LA...if not....well I guess he's happy...and rich...and well, whats wrong with that? It's not like Lady Gaga or Bieber are putting on a more believeable show...the hangup for me is that it seems to be JUST for entertainment now....

4 me the shows he did in LA in 2009, montreux 2009 and perhaps the paris shows was the last time he took steps into during material that was fresh and new..now it's like watching nostalgia or watching a rerun that u have seen on tv 200 times. u make some very good valid points about what happend 2 prince in the late 90's to present day when it comes 2 his new music a fact that a lot of artists of his time are being inflicted upong regardless of crictical acclaim of their projects. but it surely is time 2 move forward and not backwards prince

You're full of crap. Prince himself has stated that the people who come to the shows only want to hear the famous stuff and not stuff that was not popular. If you have an issue with it, take it up with Prince. No one here can force or even influence him into doing anything he doesn't want to do.

but just because the material wasn't popular doesn't mean that's it crap either or should be ignored 2 the fans that know that material.
