Thanks for the excellent review. I was a bit disappointed in the Raleigh show. Sounds like a few things were "fixed" for the next one.

There is a review in the Charlotte Observer today that doesn't sound like what I read in the comments from those that attended yesterday. The writer obviously isn't a long time Prince fan. Who cares what he thinks!

What time did Prince take the stage?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Not sure the exact time but it was somewhere between 8:20 and 8:40.

8:42pm bro... P was at the piano... I dunno if he had a dj set up there or had the music programmed into the beautiful piano, but he was acting as if he was dj'ing at the beginning of the concert... I thought the crowd was dead for the most part till he did KISS!!! mofos were loud as fuck when he did that...seeing something in the water does not compute was the one song I wished 4!!! wanted it 2b like the original version but the piano joint was cool!! Overall a pretty cool show...bout 8 1/2 on da purple party meter... encore could of been longer... after the first one, people ran for the exits!!! a stage hand placed Princes mic stand back on the stage as if 2 have another encore...then the house lights came up and it was over....right at 10:37pm! DOES ANYONE HAVE FOOTAGE OR PICS FROM OCT.9 1999 AT THE FOUNATIN BLEU IN MIAMI??? ORG NOTE ME IF U DO...PLEASE!!!

the song title is Dance (Disco Heat) Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

I'm glad you asked this. I was having a difficult time understanding him when he was talking. I asked the person sitting next to them if they were having the same problem and they agreed. I hope Greensboro is better.

After 2 days of digesting the Charlotte show, here are my thoughts:
1. He seemed rushed and like he really wasn't 100% into it. But a mediocre Prince show is better than most performers' great shows. 2. Only one encore song. I know it was 2 songs mixed up, but it was one long song to me. 3. Too many covers, too much disco. 4. They're called backup singers for a reason. Prince may want them to shine, but who paid $200 to see them sing? Though they sang wonderfully. 5. Three keyboard players, but no horns? Not that it made that big of a difference, but it was worth noting. 6. Something In The Water was a nice surprise. 7. At first I was bummed that I wasn't on the floor or up close to the stage, but 8 rows off the floor is the perfect vantage point. I saw everything that was going on. I imagine the people who paid for the VIP seats were staring at the back of his shins for 3/4ths of the show, then craning their necks to see him the other 1/4th. 8. No tourbooks, WTF? Everything else was junk. Why would he sell t-shirts for songs he didn't even release in the US (Compassion, everybody loves me)? 9. Did anyone else see the guy walking around dressed like 80s prince with the wig and sunglasses and ruffled shirt? He looked more like Austin Powers than Prince. 10. Prince rode his bike back to the stage for the encore.
That's my take. It was my 22nd Prince concert, and I can't wait until 24! Chas

This was only my first Prince concert so I have no comparison to offer but I'd have to say I agree with all of these points. Yes, I was on the floor and yes, it was not a very good seat. I took my 12 year old son with me and when everyone stood up to dance he couldn't see a single thing but their backs. I told him to stand on his chair but the people behind him cussed him out. I mean CUSSED him out. So, he laid down across the seats (because everyone was standing) and went to sleep. I can hear it years from now "Yeah, my first concert was Prince. My mom took me. I slept on the folding chairs." My seat for tonights concert in Greensboro is on the floor again. Had I thought ahead I would have opted for a few rows up and more toward the center of the stage rather than at the very end of the arrow. Live and learn.
Didn't see the guy dressed like Prince, but wish I had.
Would still love to see the bike!

Now I feel bad for you and your son! Maybe the people around you will be nicer this time!

Yep. If he wants to spotlight them, let them be the opening act. Call it "Ladies Night" or something. They sing very well, but Prince just needs a little balance with them.

I wanted to share a pic or 2 from the Charlotte show! Had a GREAT time. I can agree, though about the show seeming "rushed". I loved the fact he came back out on his bike for the encore. Looked like he was having fun at times. I was disappointed he played just "hits" rather than "Welcome 2 America" like he did at the earlier shows. Oh well, I was just overly excited to be there & glad he came to my home town again! Last time Prince played Charlotte was in 2000.
