The show last night was awesome. Meshell has a great band, it's very "punk trio" ish.... She rocks on the bass and is a joy to watch play. Songs I remember her playing:
Pop Life (started with this one...YAAAY!) Controversy Annie Christian I Would Die 4 U (BEST cover EVER of this song!) Something in the Water 1999 Little Red Corvette Sign of the Times I Wanna B UR Lover
and some more I can't remember..Im still just waking up...
HOWEVER...THe sound at the New Parysh SUUUUUUUCCKKKKEDD, and it was no fault of Meshells or her band...feedback, low mics....booooooooooo
THe crowd was hyphy..some true Meshell/ Prince fams. We all sang along to all the songs, people were sitting on the stage (small joint) and hanging off the upper balcony. THe best parts were when the band was jamming, like HITTIN' it!! Bass, drums, old school Prince...= all good! At one point Mesell said "He was more interesting before he became a Jehovahs Witness" and half the crowd went silent, while half applauded loudly. She also said "I love Prince, I really do. He changed my life". I think we all can relate to this.
I hope someone taped audio at the show because I would like to hear it again!

True that, JW isn't doing him any favors creatively. I was hoping like Bob Dylan and his Christian phases, it would pass. I would love to have seen her covers, any releases planned? "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

guess she did not hear TRC that was a cheap comment, thats like saying she was not interesting at all until she bcame a bitter [snip - CarrieMpls]

Might as well get it all out early.

On a positive note, becoming a JW has pretty much stopped his rapper ambitions. He has made other interesting music (Lotusflow3r) since becoming a JW, but on the whole it seems to have put creative limits on him more than liberated him. I was at the SF show on Sunday. I thought it was just OK, mostly because the vocals were washed out in the mix. The opening band's mix was amazing, so I don't what was going on with her. It didn't suck, but it was a little tired. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

Well, I was not impressed by the clips that I have seen of the show. They reminded me of why I stopped going to see Meshell in concert. I used to buy all her stuff and never miss her when she came to Chicago. However, when she hit her Bitter album phase, it spilled over to her live show. The energy and fun were gone. There was less crowd interaction, less enthusiasm, and the song selections were downers. Separately the songs on Bitter were nice but as a whole album or theme for live shows, it didn't work for me. It killed the energy - for me.
This seemed like it had the potential to be good, but the song performances were as uninspired as her recent shows.
I think Meshell's comment was as crude as Alamine's, which I think was Alamine's point - to show that Meshell made the "dumbest comment ever." I could say that I found Meshell MORE interesting before she "became bitter." However, I realize that many life changes besides someone's religion will affect someone's creativity. I don't think that Prince is less interesting musically. At 52, he might not write the same kinds of colorful lyrics that a 25 year-old would or be as overtly sexual, but he has not lost a step musically at all. Meshells really hit n miss. I've been to shows where she's inspired & knocks it outta the park & others like the prince gig on sunday where it feels like the shows on sleeping pills. I'm glad i didn't go to that one. But to say she's lost it since Bitter is missing the mark. I remember seeing her SF independent gig supporting The World Has Made Me... and it was an epic show for the time capsule. Just depends on if she's feeling it or not.

I am glad you saw an epic show. I can only go on my experience. I've seen three post-Bitter concerts and they were all, as you said "on sleeping pills." I did buy Comfort Woman and Cookie. Those albums were hit and miss. There were some great tunes on there and some afterthoughts. So, I am not saying she "lost it" after Bitter, actually, I didn't say that at all. However, for me, the post-Bitter shows that I saw were all downers. I guess she wasn't feeling it, which is sad because each time the Chicago crowd was ready to explode, yet she never ignited. The crowds were visibly disappointed and became increasingly sparse as the show wore on. Pity, because I think she is very talented. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
