well, i think to conclude the thread P really raised his game at the last gig and I hope that is now the standard he maintains. As the great man says 'you can't please everybody all the time'. Now if we just get his pride back when it comes to making Cd's!!!

L4, even when he was doing smaller venues, and playing songs he normally doesn't play at arenas, there were still complaints from some fans. Many are never short of those type of complaints, and it's impossible for any artist to please all his fans. When I attended the Empire Vegas show, which was my very first time seeing Prince perform in a small venue, he played songs I never heard of and it was other fans,I asked what the name of a particular song was. For example, "Empty Room" was played and I never heard that before, but sought it out once I heard it. I strayed away from being a fan in the 90s, busy living my life, and was a returning fan in 2004, during Musicology, so I had a lot and still have a lot of catching up to do with learning of songs of his I never heard of. Do I care of some diehard fan is pissed off that I don't know some of the words to a song at a concert I'm attending, why should I be? They don't pay for my ticket to any concert I attend, pay my bills or sweeten my coffee. Different strokes for different folks.
When I go to an arena show, I do expect some very familiar songs will be played, with the possibility of unfamiliar and new songs. I've experienced quite a few shows in smaller venues where he's played rarities/unfamiliar songs to me and current songs, so I don't feel like I was cheated out of anything during my time as a fan with any of his music/performances, but like I said, to each their own. When I go to any show, I'm going to enjoy that experience for me, not for anyone else.

Who said he lost it? How would you or the rest of us know something that personal unless we are actually Prince? Maybe he's content with the music he's putting out, but that also doesn't necessarily mean we'll all like every song he thinks his fans will, but then again, that's why there's always room for constructive criticism from fans about his music---which is far different and more motivating than some fans choosing to bash, insult and throw tantrums over what they don't like about some of his music. Just sayin'.

oh i have gotten that experience just at the palladium in 94. here it was playing in a club so intimate so up close. the majority of the audience knew every song he did that night and not one song was released on a official album. people were mind blown that night and someone next 2 me after the concert said .."damn he didn't do little red covette". i get that people may want 2 hear certain songs all the time but it's also cool like on 1/18 a couple next 2 me was asking me "hey what's that he song he just did until the end of time?" "it's called adore" "yeah but what was that untul the end of time?" "part of the lyrics!"
i guess i'm still stuck with a quote by joe perry of aerosmith saying how he can't stand 2 play walk this way all the time. a artist is for better or worse trapped by fame and several songs in their career that they just can never break free from man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Well maybe you'll get to see him perform in an intimate setting again sometime in the future, as we just never know when he will do a show at a smaller venue for fans.
I had to laugh at that part of your post about the couple on 1/18/11. There's still a lot of his songs, I've seen people mention on this forum, that I've either never had a chance to listen to or don't know about, so there's really no running out of songs I want to hear in the future. When I purchased the Crystal Ball set, a lot of those songs were new to me. I guess we all have different tastes in his music. Anyway, I look forward to enjoying the 2/7 concert like I enjoyed the ones on 12/18 and 12/29, and will get the best out of the show as I can.

Just my 2 cents ... I think that what it all comes down to is that the big arena shows will always be mostly hits, because that's what the majority wants to hear, and if some long-time fans are bored with that - too bad. Understandable maybe, but I think that the kind of show Prince does in an arena can be expected to a certain point, in regards to the setlist. So why complain about it? (Besides, as we have seen recently - he still always manages to surprise!)
The big difference are obviously the aftershows! That's where the die hard fans can find the rare songs and the unexpected! I think Prince loves doing those small club shows because also he likes the freedom of doing songs not many might want to hear at an arena show. So I think there is something for everyone ... except that the aftershows are rare and hard to get to, of course.
And the end result is that Prince cannot please everybody at the same time, and there will always be someone who complains. Which I personally find unfair, but there you go.
