Well to me, last night's show was KILLER!!!!! I enjoyed the hell out of myself! Yes, he played songs that he's played in the past. Yes, I would LOVE if Prince would play some different old songs and a lot more new songs too but you know what? This is Prince we're talking about here and and he does what he wants and I love him for it.

What made the show so different from shows in the last few years was that he had energy that I haven't seen him have in years. He was dancing his ass off, jumping on top of the piano a bunch of times, and his voice was in tip top shape. It was a fun show and I LOVED every second of it. I took one of my best friends who's never seen Prince before to the show and he loved it. He was shocked at how much energy Prince had. Prince did the damn thing and then some last night and I am excited about tomorrow night and all the other nights he'll be playing in my backyard!!!!!! headbang music excited dancing jig

I think you guys are sorta forgetting that there will be other shows and according to Prince, different setlists each night. "Come early, come often, cause I got alot of hits..."

Who knows what songs he'll pull out for the next few shows... we'll have to wait and see.

Altho if he did America on Saturday night I might lost my MIND.

That is all.

what scares me is when he says "hits" that means the chance 4 all those songs we have heard b4 ..i seriously doubt i wish u heaven, the most beautiful girl, dance 4 me, chocolate box, 3121, beautiful loved and blessed, the word will be in the setlist

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

U wanna hear those??? Honestly majority of Prince "fans" (fans, not stans) don't really KNOW those songs.. it's all about the energy at the shows. If he's doing a song that many people who are at a show don't really know and can't sing along to, the energy drops which affects those who are on stage performing... The songs you mentioned would be the kinds of songs he might save for an afershow OR he might mix them into a set with more songs that people know and remember At an after show most of the ppl there are true true fans and know those somewhat obscure songs and want to HEAR those songs.

Seriously tho... folks need to relax with all of this "I don't wanna hear the same old songs.." stuff. It's his show, he can play any thing he wants to play. Folks complaining and what not, but if you were AT a show and he started to play something you've heard a million times before, so what??? Dance! Or don't go to the the shows. Prince is still gon get paid regardless and those of us who are there and who will be seeing him perform Kiss for the 12345645908455th time will LOVE it and have a GRAND old time.

Enuff already.

yes... it was a Prince show!!! Esperanza opened the show with 3 songs I think, followed by Lala who did maybe 8 songs and then at 9:37 Prince took the stage and rocked for 2 hrs... out of the 2 hrs he was only off the stage 2 times to change his outfits...I don't know why you guys thought that he was just gonna do a song here and there.. It's a Prince Concert with supporting acts..

Well I guess with the press conference he did it made it sound like he was just gonna be the MC.. sorta like introducing acts etc... he was saying it was gonna show case alot of new talent.

But I am very glad it was more of a Prince show.. now lets see if he takes in on the road to other states... thank you for the info. smile

He definitely wasn't an MC. It was a Prince show but I think I sat in my seat for over 2.5 hours before he took the stage. I know I am a spoiled Prince snob & am not used to opening acts, but I would have preferred if he had come on to introduce the acts or had their sets with in the show. I guess other concert goers are used to other acts who have openers. When the special guests jammed with him, it was great. I just lost some of my excitement having to wait so long. Of course once Prince took the stage, it was back on.

Sounds like I'm the only one who wasn't crazy about the format.

Im not really a fan of opening acts. I came to see the person I PAID for, not anyone else...it's almost like you're captive because you don't wanna really see these people, but since you don't wanna miss the main act, you get to the venue early and suffer through it. Not that Esparanza and Lalah aren't wonderful, they are, I'm sure, but that's not who you really paid to see...

Prince did sorta make it seem like these folks were gonna be jamming WITH him, not really opening acts. And they DID jam with him, but only for what two, three songs?

I mean it's cool tho that he gave them an oppportunity to showcase their talents to a large group of Prince fans that they might not have been able to reach otherwise. I mean Lalah's been out there doing her thing for a while, but Esparanza's fairly new, so this was a great opportunity for her to expand her fan base.

And ya'll on the 29th better believe y'all gon be seeing Janelle Monae and Mint Condition as opening acts before Prince takes the stage.

all songs that he has done previously live tho on various tours tho ..when was the last time he did thieves in the temple? when was the last time he did even soft and wet? it's the constant same songs all the time tho that he does choose 2 do. prince's last few maintstream albums were either number one or close 2 it yet u look at this setlist, anything from those albums from recent years?

well, the opener is certainly very recent.

as for the rest, for 99% of the audience, even for 99% of the hardcore fans that don't travel all over the world to see him perform every show, this is a pretty good setlist that nicely balances big hits and some relatively obscure stuff.

do I LOVE the setlist? no, not at all. but it's pretty good. I mean, I'm impressed that it wasn't a straight up hits show and I'm impressed that the covers and the songs sung by background vocalists was kept to a relative minimum.

this is a good, balanced setlist for this size show by most people's standards. including fans'. yeah, it's not an INTERESTING one for us, because we've seen all these songs in the setlists and because we've heard the bootlegs, but I wouldn't be disappointed by seeing him do this particular show live, in person. it covers the hits bases and it covers the bases for the more serious fan by digging deeper into the catalog than he usually does for this kind of show.

I thought it was a pretty good balance too. First: setlists alone cannot always convey the quality of a performance... Not saying every song was reinvented... but for example take a song like "Kiss." In the past I have not been a fan of the live performance, overburdened with live horns... but this time it was a stripped down rendition wtih a great dance breakdown that was refreshing.

I think these Arena shows are going to play to common denominator audiences... for every poster like L4OA who wants more obscure stuff, there were the people actually at the show sitting right behind me complaining, "Where the hell is '1999,' 'Little Red Corvette,' and 'Let's Go Crazy'?!? I'm going to be pissed if I don't hear those!"

Aftershows, small intimate settings--that's where we are more likely to hear obscure stuff.

For me, it was cool to hear songs that may have been in past setlists, but I personally hadn't seen performed live before such as Scandalous, Cool, If I Was Your Girlfriend.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but another cool thing is that they were

playing some great choice Prince cuts on the sound system before he came on.

Pop Life

Screams Of Passion

Madhouse six!!

Gett Off (Houstyle mix) -with all the "you ain't got no underwear on" lines and everything.

Mazaratti 100 MPH

SHOCKADELICA!!!! -7" version though. But damn Shockadelica played in a stadium! faint

17 Days! -a lot of people were very excited when this came on.

What else am I forgetting??

Oh yeah and also while the stage was being set up the movie Finding Nemo was on

a constant loop on the Jumbotron! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming giggle

Some orgers are too jaded to see new talent or open themselves up to it. Prince obviously has some respect for these artists. That's how you learn about new music and broaden your tastes.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

ficktyt

Bottom line is without the proper promotion nothing will work. Granted 2 MSG shows sold out in 30 minutes, however, even after canceling the 14th, last night was half empty-not because he can't sell out an arena, but there was no promotion, no new album supported by TV appearances (other than The View), interviews, videos, etc. Throw in the economy and people needing money for Christmas and there you are. Compare this with Musicology concerts and notice the difference as I said in a previous post. For better or worse, his latest albums have not been commercial successes. Therefore, if he wants to, and we want him to perform 2010 and LotusFlow3r material, he has to do small venues. If he wants to fill arenas, unless there is another 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT or even Musicology (because of the blanket promotion) somewhere in the future, we will be hearing the hits with a few new things thrown in from now on. If he plays the promotion, video, interview, TV appearance game and tours for a new album, the best we can expect is another Musicology type tour where at least he play quite a few songs from that album (Musicology, Life of the Party, Satisfied, Call My Name, On the Couch), in addition to his hits.

sec 1 floor HAD TO BE THE WORST SECTION! did prince even have his heels on??? Aside from going deaf halfway thru the show it was good. the girl behind me whose mom was in vip would not stop screaming and blew our eardrums out at the end. But it was the 7 ft tall man with his family and the asian adopted kid that killed the show for me with his big head was like a door in front of us. lala was a giant bore!!! people should have thrown tomatos because she just wouldnt get off the stage and her singing was second rate at best. she somehow managed to give me a headache with her monotone that varied from bass to tenor every other verse. other than that prince was AMAZING!!

Enuff already.

i see ur tagline and i can recall how in 94 at the palldium he did a show that was mind fucking blowing and A LOT of his fans knew those songs that weren't even out on a album yet and he felt that vibe and partied. so if people don't know the songs that they can "sing along to" as u say then how did that happen back in 94?

if people want the music there are ways 2 get it and let a artist move forward in pogression and not being held back. so if the "majority" of people don't know the songs past a certain point of time then who's fault is that? should u be required 2 wear the same clothes u wore 10 years ago or get fed the same food every time? the prince of old would still be moving forward instead of stuck in rot performing the same songs. where did that prince go that came out with a new album and a tour and did the new music or a few songs from past albums in his show?

someone as proflic with a huge catagloge of music shouldn't be held in a time warp but is being held by his own fans smh

and some would just be content of hearing prince eating a bag of chips on stage and saying it's the greatest show on earth

yes just being in the same room made it even better thenany concert i ever attended. hearing his play was gravy. greatest concert ever..but i was a first timer too

yoda i don't wear a cross?!!? i wear a prince symbol prince guitar wacky nutty I When Prince's cum dries, diamonds are formed. lol eek drooling no one tops prince in concert!

I am curious to why no one else has mentioned Prince and his use of teleprompters at this show. Surely rehearsals could have aided Shelby n Lalah if they needed them. I was waiting for someone to say that some of princes songs were so obscure that even he forgot the words!

Two quick questions.

Did any part of the stage rotate?

Were people at the back ignored like some were in London?

word up!! if i never went 2 the xenophobia celebration and saw victor wooten live i wouldn't know or have his cd's now..opening acts can be a great way 4 exposure 2 another audience, hell prince was a opening act himself once upon a time it's not like he just burst on the scene and said YAY TRICK!!

Some orgers are too jaded to see new talent or open themselves up to it. Prince obviously has some respect for these artists. That's how you learn about new music and broaden your tastes.

no doubt and thanks 2 prince my music horizon has broaden out so much just from either his cover versions or his likes in other artists

hence i can't wait 2 see mint condition

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

If he plays the promotion, video, interview, TV appearance game and tours for a new album, the best we can expect is another Musicology type tour where at least he play quite a few songs from that album (Musicology, Life of the Party, Satisfied, Call My Name, On the Couch), in addition to his hits.

ur so right when it comes 2 promotion and prince is his own worst enemy lately. he drops the ball much 2 quick on his releases of late, it's like he gets the front money, delivers the product and bounces and leaves it 2 others 2 promote it
