ok so he opens with LAYDOWN!!! ya Laydown!! As soon as the beat kicks it you know -IT'S LAYDOWN!! And just how cool is it to see him say "from the heart of Minnesota here come the Purple Yoda" to a stadium crowd? PFC -Pretty Fuckin Cool. It rocked live! He had those round shades on that he's been wearing this week and some sharp outfit on. Maybe yellow or gold I don't remember. Simply awesome! Oh god I hope he opens with Laydown again Fri. I wanna see it again! I was definately surprised when the second song he did was Beautiful Ones. It was a good version though and let's put it this way, he didn't play LGC -alright. I was DYING to see him do the Uptown/Raspberry Beret/Cream/Cool/U Got The Look set so kicking in to Uptown sent me in to an absolute frenzy! I don't know if it was me, but it seems like C-O-O-L rocked the house! Now I'll tell you that I was not really looking forward to hearing NC2U, but I have to say that I thourougly enjoyed it tonight. The interplay betwen him & Shelby was smooth and fun. When she sang "I could put my arms around every boy I see" Prince stuck in a "you better not" and without a pause she throws in: "I just might" or something like that. It was real cute and they really belted out a good one on NC2U. Between songs Prince announces "Yeah Welcome 2 America!" and then with a real zest of a sneer: "Where U can fail at your job, get fired, rehired, and get a 7 Million dollar tip" or something like that. It was funny. So after NC2U he's standing there and is like "What shaaaal we do" He like really hung out there for a minuite going Hmmmm... and then whips out a blistering She's Always In My Hair!!! Ok this the song that was on the b-side of the first Prince record I ever bought -I was psyched!! He fucking killed it on the guitar to!! His guitar was UP LOUD. It was a LOUD show, my ears are stil ringing, but when he did the solos on SAIMH and Purple Rain that guitar was looooouud! It sounded searing and awesome! Didn't feel like a going-through-the-motions like on the Rave2000 vid, I thought it felt like he was tearing in to that mother fucker of a classic b-side. And I don't know I really didn't expect him to do one like this at the NJ show. It seems like there were a few pics for the fans like say SAIMH, Laydown, Adore, SISIA, even Cool. THEN he segues right in to If I Was Your Girlfriend!!!! One of my all time top fav Prince songs. well you can see how this show is going for me so far? He does a top notch version and shares it with Esperanza. Nice! Now of course I've seen him do the Insatiable/Scandalous bit a few times, but he did a classy hit on it here and one thing that really added to it is that the seats I ended up with were so great that I could see easily and clearly and as he was out on the arrow of the symbol he was close enough for me to see really well. OK, THEN, THEN he does ADORE!!! Full band Adore. full back up singers, long drawn out version with acouple of new parts, amazing wonderful, beautiful version of Adore!! I have to tell you that it was THE BEST version of Adore I have seen live. He stood on the piano with a single spotlight shining down on him. "When the butterflies hover, don't you want to get under the covers, and just play around with each other?" or something like that he added. It was s-w-e-e-t! Now to be honest I wasn't really looking forward to seeing him play Purple Rain again, but hot damn if by the time he was tearing up that guitar I was waving and screaming and singing oooo ooo oooo oooooo! Seriously, Purple Rain kicked some serious ass tonight. His guitar playing was on fire . I did seem like a lot of peeps didn't really know it was Purple Rain until he started singing He came back out and when Kiss kicked in the palce went nuts. I thought this version of Kiss was perky & funky. Had me dancin my azz off! And dancing along with parts from the 12" being played vamped live -awseome! While this was going on he was standing in the center of the stage doing cool little in place moves and dance steps. Kind of like on the Lovesexy show in the song Lovesexy when he stands in the center and does funny little Prince moves. Down to just funky little shoulder twitches to the beat. Very cool. I'll take some silly funky Prince moves over hoards of sychronized coreographed back up dancers ANY DAY. Kiss Verdict: loved it! OK now. He does Sometimes It Snows In April. Does it as a duet with Lalah and this is the longest most complete sweet amazing version of SISIA that I have ever seen performed. Simply beautiful. I am SO GLAD I was there to see it. Phew. Then they did Diamonds And Pearls as a duet. Again beautiful. THEN he starts crankin out All The Critics Love U In NY on the piano!!! I don't know if many peeps knew that one because everyone around me was still seated from D&P and i was like ATCLUINY!!! The Controversy/Sexy Dancer/Le Freak/Housequake romp at the end was thumpin and pumpin. "Clap yo hands/stomp yp feet!!" Yeah, I wanted more, but I'll just have to wait till Friday I guess!
Oh and there was no 2010Deluxe CD at the show & I should also mention that there were some sound issues in the show. Now I thought that the sound was good for the whole thing. It was LOUD and rockin, but a few times there was an extended ring out of feedback. Oh yeah and before they did D&P Prince asked for a new mike for Lalah and when they didn't get it out to her fast enough he said "well she can have mine then" handed it to her, took hers and chucked it across the stage!
Wow what a fun time! Prince THANK YOU for putting on one hell of a show. As you usually do!

Looks decent. Not a really "deep" setlist, but at least the endless number of covers and background singer spotlights have been cut down. I'd be happy with this setlist

yeah okay i will hold my breath man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

the thing is, prince has made it known and his fans have tons of unreleased stuff so that's what the die hards want that type of show like ONA that didn't cater 2 the ones still stuck in the 80's. so i would rather see prince at smaller venues so that the artist in him can fully come out instead of the washed up artist that he's being made 2 be man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

bingo!! this is what prince lacks 2 see ..it's not all about just 1999, lgc, lrc and purple rain ..there is so much more he could do man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I've seen Santana 6 times, and he has played: - Evil Ways - Black Magic Woman - Oye Como Va - Jingo - Maria Maria - Smooth
and a few others at every show.... People eat it up, and leave feeling like they got their money's worth.
I just love live music, and feel blessed that these artists are still gracing us with their talent.
But, yeah.. I dig the Prince aftershows for variety. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Thank you for this rundown/review. Right now, I am so f@#$ing excited about the NYC show on the 18th I don't think I will be able to contain myself for the next 60 hours.

but isn't that what he did at this show? Lay Down was in there. Uptown. Cool. Let's Work. Shhh. She's Always In My Hair. If I Was Your Girlfriend. Adore. Sometimes It Snows In April. All The Critics Love U In New York.
looking at the posted setlist, there are quite a few minor hits and things that weren't hits at all in there. and no Let's Go Crazy or 1999 or Little Red Corvette.
I think this was actually a pretty great mix of hits and relatively obscure stuff. of course he's been performing a lot of this stuff in the last few years, but looking at this set list, there's a lot of stuff in there that a lot of the audience in an arena show isn't going to be that familiar with.

Exactly, there are folks who haven't heard the boots or seen recent setlists so for them they are loving it...shit I've heard all the European shows & I'm still loving it! Just some good for thought. Paris9748430 said:
This is only because you've probably been seeing setlists, maybe listening to bootlegs.
You're pretty much too used to these songs.
But, for someone who hasn't been following Prince for years. Or someone who's only seeing him for the 1st time.
This is an awesome show with an awesome setlist.
If you've never seen Prince in concert before, or haven't seen him in a long time, it doesn't get better.
I doubt the 15-20,000 people at the show tonight don't find the show dull.

I enjoyed the show. A lot of slow songs tonight that he really hasn't done in a while. Diamonds and Pearls duet was nice, killer version of Adore with the entire band Insatiable and Scandalous, Beautiful Ones--all nice. I wish he would put Nothing Compares 2 U away for a while and do The Most Beautiful Girl in the World for a change.
Crowd on our side seemed much more into it than the crown on the piano side from what I could see. People on that side were sitting during Purple Rain. It was weird to see a half-empty arena for Prince, but I guess the economy and it being just before Christmas made a difference. MSG will rock!
Great to see John Blackwell back with the NPG. He killed Shhh! as usual. Can't wait for Friday night.

he has to play a good number of hits when he is playing arenas ?....i think its a good mix...when i go to see a band....i want to hear the hits...or a good number of them...sure your the same...the one nite alone tour playing small venues....thats when he wasnt bothered about playing too many 'hits' but that was mainly hardcore fans...

True Guitar Hero, With More Love and Less LeerBy JON PARELESEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — “Do you want me?” Prince sang shortly into his concert at the Izod Center, his first of two shows here before he performs on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. He knew the answer would be an affirmative roar. And his opening song was a boast: “Laydown,” from his most recent album “20Ten” (NPG), announced, “From the heart of Minnesota/Here comes the purple Yoda” and matter-of-factly asserted, “Everybody wanna be me.”
Well, if not to be him, to have something like his vitality. Prince Rogers Nelson, 52, has been a star for more than 30 years, and a prolific one, releasing more than 30 studio albums, with much of them recorded by Prince on all instruments and vocals.
Before “20Ten” this year — a CD distributed with newspapers and magazines across Europe, presumably getting him paid upfront — he released two albums in 2009; he has generally released an album or two per year since 1978. That gives him an enormous number of songs to draw upon for a concert, and in a set that ran nearly two hours, he did, including songs to be expected — “Purple Rain” — and songs that certainly were not, like “She’s Always in My Hair,” the B-side of the 1985 single “Raspberry Beret” (which was also in the set), or “Sometimes It Snows in April” from his 1986 album, “Parade.”
The current tour is billed as “Welcome 2 America,” which Prince announced with a brief taunt: “Welcome to America, y’all,” Prince said, “where you can fail at your job, get fired, rehired and get a $700 billion tip.” But that was the concert’s only political moment. Although he has waxed philosophical in songs on recent albums, Prince devoted the show to songs about love and desire.
When Prince and his band were onstage, it didn’t matter if his material was stellar — like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which he sang with Shelby J, turning a cry of loneliness into a couple’s reunion — or merely adequate, like “Cool.” His funk songs virtually required dancing; his amorous ballads, in and out of falsetto, lived up to titles like “Scandalous” and “Insatiable.” He savored every line he sang.
And Prince’s rockers featured guitar solos as expressive as his voice, whether he was playing hard-bitten, bluesy jabs or anthemic long lines. He toured rock and soul history, harking back to Chuck Berry in “Cream,” hinting at Memphis soul with staccato licks at the beginning of “Purple Rain,” summoning the vocal harmonies of smooth 1970s soul in “Adore,” dipping into jazz for one interlude, approaching metal for another. It was all, proudly, played in real time by a well-rehearsed band; Prince is a holdout that way.
While he’s not as acrobatic as he once was, Prince is still a showman, though his foundation is music, not spectacle. Compared with his younger self, he was more loving and less leering (though hardly chaste) and more a guitarist than a dancer (not a bad tradeoff in the end). He paced himself on Wednesday, handing off two full songs to his female backup singers while he changed costumes. Prince also shared duets with his opening acts, the jazz bassist and airborne scat singer Esperanza Spalding and the sultry R&B ballad crooner Lalah Hathaway.
As Prince performed on a stage shaped like his trademarked glyph, he was in constant motion: starting a song on the piano and then climbing on top of it, or strutting all around the stage, again and again. He punctuated his guitar solos with twirls and gestures. Among rock guitar heroes, Prince is not only one of the masters; he is by far the best dancer. But he saved his best moves for “Kiss”: hip-twitches, shoulder shakes and moments of poised near-stillness when the drumbeat moved just an elbow or wrist. It’s easy to envision Prince as another Chuck Berry or James Brown, rocking for decades to come.
Review by the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/17/arts/music/17prince.html
I love reading the concert reviews! Prince has been bringing lots of joy to us this year ... first in Europe, now in the US ... and its great how he gets everybody raving about his concerts!! As diverse the opinions are about his CDs and his personality, almost everyone seems to agree - press and fans alike - that he is one of the best live performers and his concerts hardly ever disappoint anyone!! I think that's fantastic! Prince, U R THE BEST!!!!

Love it!!....that sure enough is the truth!! Pretty good report from the NY Times. "LayDown" was the perfect opener for sure to pump up the vibe, and I hope we get that at MSG! Cannot wait until his Purple Badness rocks the MSG shows and NYC is going to rock the house down with him! !
Like this part of that article too: NY Times article:

Highlights for me were :
"Laydown" and "COOL"--both were great live. Laydown needs a longer workout though (a la "Face Down" during the Jam of the Year shows)
And the dancing... whoa Prince I don't remember him dancing like this in over a decade. Sure the splits and jumping from speaker platforms are gone, but he showcased some smooth moves especially at the end of the extended version of "Kiss."
Which brings me to... "Kiss" that was probably the best live version I've heard in a very long time. I think it helped that there were no horns to clutter the spare arrangement (which is one of the charms of the song in the first place).
Lots of ballads last night... I was really surprised. But his falsetto is in tip top shape, and his transition from falsetto to guttural scream is as smooth as ever.
Like that there were minimal covers.
The stage=major highlight! While I hope that he does some intimate shows while he is in NYC (and I did think an Apollo residency would have been cool), getting to see this stage is very very cool. The lighting design (floor lights, and border/jetway style strobes) is very well done.
The gold strat has nice tone.
My only complaint... time. I wish he got on stage earlier (he started at 9:30). It was a solid 2 hour show, but at times I wished that some songs would get to be stretched out some more. I say cut down on the opening acts, or have them start earlier (at exaclty 7:30) so Prince can get on at least by 8:30-9. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32
