That's a good question!
Every concert I've seen since 1986, every tour, anycountry I've been in he has sung Purple Rain. I've seen approx 60 concerts.
To say the least, the song doesn't give me any highs more... It's just: ok Prince, let's get it over so I can dance.

I know, but as I explained to a friend recently unfortunately the more casual listener and the newer fans are expecting to hear his "Hits" which Purple Rain is one of them.
It makes me recall an interview with Paul McCartney saying there were certain Beatles songs he would love never to play again, but because the fans want to hear them he still played them. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

You would have thought so, but looking at the performance of it in Milan a couple of weeks ago, he certainly doesn't want to short change us. He nailed it there!
The only times I have seen him NOT perform Purple Rain were on the Ultimate Live Tour in 1995 where he performed mostly The Gold Experience, Come and Exodus material.
Then again on the One Night Alone Tour in 2002. Although he did occasionally perform it on a few select dates but not on the ones I was at - seem to remember him saying something like 'If you've come to get your Purple Rain on, you came to the wrong house'
I think it's a fairly safe bet it will appear at all the W2A shows though. Enjoy the night, and lionking enjoy the rest of the set too - seeing Prince isn't about just the songs, it is about the whole performance...

Having seen the recent Milan performance of PR, I can totally see why he still loves playing it.
He shouldnt be playing it hundreds of times in a row of course, but the song is simply terrific, the guitar solo truly wonderful to play and the interaction with the crowd absolutely marvelous.
I don't think he could ever really get tired of playing it.

He is playing it all the time now but there have been Tours where it wasn't included like the Gold Experience tour and the One Nite Alone Tour but I think it was played in New York but on keyboard rather the guitar...I don't think he planned it either but he just slipped in to it.
As for aftershows and getting tickets......Keep ear to ground and then queue...first in gets in..Once place is full well the place is full. It usually pay at the door, but after all that I have yet to see an aftershow! The right to free discussion is protected!!

Please buy some more CD's and actually listen to them as you did not really appreciate the albums well enough as it appears. Why ask for Purple Rain when he has written so much music in the years after that song? If that rain song is your only goal, then you will be happy. But why wonder about an aftershow? Please try to enjoy the other songs at the main show first. Because what if he decides not to do an aftershow that night? Will you be unhappy? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Why u gotta rain on this guy's parade? He's never seen Prince before, he likes the song, so what's the problem? and what's with you telling him what music to buy or listen to? Isn't that a personal choice? Homer Simpson: "I call the big one Bitey"!!

oh no - totally disagree!
starting with purple rain in vienna this summer was one of the greatest moments I enjoyed during his concerts. have been to about 25 but this start was so sensationell - he got the crowd on the first second an all went nuts - so for me it's very often a special moment at his concerts but esp. at vienna it was simply perfect!!

He listened to Parade? He didn't say so. Purple Raind and the old material in general gets way too much attention. Have a look at the main part of the setlists of the previous main shows. Average age of the songs 23 years or more.
He loves all of his songs as his children, but do we?

If you have been pPrince fn for a while and you finaly go to your first concet, of course you want to hear Purple Rain. I personally wouldn't mind if he didn't play it the nextime see him (Wich is gonna be TONIGHT HAAAAA RELAX ) ahum. But when he does play it, almost every time i get moved by it. Especially when he plays a longer version than he has done for a while, with more lyrics beig sung.

There were rumours of a South African gig. Computicket advertised the shows but the information was removed from the website a day before the tickets were going to go on sale. Algoa fm advertised the concert too. The dates advertised were late in November, hence I'm hoping something is announced soon.

and i reminded this same friend about the palladium show in nyc in 94 ..was it played there? did u still have a kick ass time?
YEP YEP!!
time 2 put this song out 2 pasture like a fisher price drum kit man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I must say that if I EVER went to a Prince concert and didn't hear Purple Rain...I would be so sad! That song is amazing live, arguably one of his best guitar solos and I think it means so much to him. Just look at the emotion he puts into it. And listen to the crowd and look at the the tears and you will see it is very important to the fans.
For me, I could hear him sing it every single night for 5 years straight and still not tire of it and still shed the tears, especially when he hits that first guitar chord starting the solo. And I must say I am hoping he performs it at the W2A shows 1/2 as good as that Milan performance. WOW! That song has always had a special place in my heart and always will... So I hope he never tires of playing it! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

You sound like a certain Harry I know... And at least you agree w.r.t. the rain song. Perhaps you listened to his other CD's as well? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I just love when he plays "Purple Rain", cause it's always a new version, it's always deep and intense. Whenever I attend to one of Prince's concert I hear this song, and all of his hits with new ears, because he knows how to renew, how to boost his playing, and how to make the notesbe listenned as if they were played for the first time..I should say, the lyrics stay the same but not the notes.. We make our own way to heaven everyday
