For a main show it was excellent! A love bizarre Jam with people on stage: inpressive music wise. The man was cool tonight. Ciao,

Yes the show was quite good, he is a genius...but I expected a more groovy concert...I was in Nice at the end of July and that concert has been much more amazing...anyway Prince is one of the best artists, no way!!!

I agree: more groovy would have been cool. But Prince was in good mood, was dancing like I've never seen him dance before, but some more contact with the public would also have waked up the audience, which was in my opinion just watching, some singing (Purple rain came slowly and OooooMilan wasn't adapted by a lot of the people) and clapping. Would really have loved to hear something from the last 2 albums. But enjoyed the trip to Milano. This is funky music. All the sexy people dance. Stratus was my favourite, sadly not yet in light show.

It was a good show.

Upto "let's go crazy" he was on stage with just the house lights on, brilliant.

Well, it's probably a matter of personal taste since I was in Nice too and liked this one a lot more! Maybe it has also something to do with me being a lot closer to the stage last night than I was in Nice...

As to the audience, contrary to the Italian stereotype, the Italian audiences are often very quiet, maybe we approach a concert more as a "performance" than a "party". The biggest exception are Springsteen's concerts, I heard him say (in the US, to a US magazine) that he always gets a special response from the audience in Italy and having been to San Siro stadium to watch him more than once, I agree...

But that's an exception. I even spoke with a couple of people last night who complained that Prince let the audience sing "Raspberry Beret", they said "I'd rather listen to Prince sing, not to a bunch of fans". I actually think they have a point, though I must admit I sing a lot razz

i'm starting 2 wonder if this tour has a name of 20ten based on the setlists cause it sure doesn't look like he's doing songs from that album on this go around so it would be safe 2 assume that when the "welcome 2 america" phase begins there REALLY won't be any new songs played

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I've noticed a very different audiances between e.g. the US and e.g. Holland. Where American audiances love to sing what the artists wants them to and cheer as he wants them to, Dutch audiance would not do that.

Following the instructions of one person on stage just makes some European audiances feel uncomfortable. Acting just as the leader wants them to, evokes an irritation rather then enthousiastic group hug.

Similar as you describe; attitudes can be more that of expecting the artist to perform and the audiance to listen instead of participating in a two way stream.

Therefore, I loved Werchter last summer. The crowd was enthousiastic and involved, singing the lyrics and really did party. I think Prince singing 1999 and the audiance singing "Party" over and over was an incentive, because the interaction of P and the audiance was what made that concert so great. Never in my live did I see a Dutch audiance so alive and connecting with the artist.

Some were taking aback by the rain, but I just danced like crazy in the purple rain and just loved singing the lyrics and watch P playing the guitar...it was great

Really hope the interaction will be so smooth again in Antwerp and Arnhem!

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that sentence I put in bold red up there... I don't know whether it's a cultural thing or what, but it definitely feels that way. Taking the Milan gig as an example, Shelby had to repeatly come back to prompt the audience with that "paaaarty" singalong during 1999, as the audience would quit after saying 2-3 times... still, I am sure everyone loved the concert and was blown away by the show!

Fully enjoyed the OOOOOOOHHH Milan-show biggrin although the setlist basically just had songs from the 80s. But as long as our purple Prince and his band do them fresh and with devotion you just can't resist shaking !!

Stratus was a real kick-start into a funky night and already one of the highlights, together with Controversy , Let's Work and Purple Rain, once again elevating and full of passion !

Doing the first 5 songs with the houselights on was unusual but an original move. It was like a pre-gig before the main concert, with the exception of Mountains (love this song btw) just covers beeing played.

Ida Nielsen is def. an enrichment, sooo fonky on the bass and looking so sexy .

Prince was again in a good mood, moving and dancing and not showing any annyoyance when he got touched by every third guest-dancer on stage smile

Love him heart

It's just his "announcements" of playing the whole night and then you have to find out that there is no aftershow, which is a little bit sad

So, where is the next aftershow, who can tell ???

Maybe it's the war trauma, don't know. I've seen American crowds just go crazy at concerts. The first time I witnessed that, I brought my Dutch attitude: "These Americans just do as you tell them, can't think for themselves". Fortunately I let go that European background and was able to open up and really enjoy concerts the American way.

Back in Holland, I sometimes felt bad for American artists when on stage trying to get a Dutch audiance to sing or cheer. It didn't happen. The audiance just would think: "Who do you think you are, to make us cheer to you as if we are your puppets" or "Do you still need that much confirmation from the outside world about your music that you need an applause for every song you play?" and the audiance gets irritated. In response, the artist gets irritated assumably thinking: "What a lame and boring audiance, why did they come to this concert if they don't like it?".

Unfortunate cultural miscommunication;

Dear American performer on stage:

If an European audiance is quiet and not moving, that's nothing to worry about, it has nothing to do with whether they enjoy your show or not. They just don't move or cheer, it's a cultural thing.

If they don't react, just know that a great performance of a song makes them more happy than having to cheer to an artist on stage every 5 minutes. They enjoy your great performance in silence. They really do enjoy and have a good time. Leave them to it.

Dear European audiance:

If an American artists is asking you to sing or cheer, it's not because he's too lazy to perform himself nor is he trying to relive WWII. He just thinks that a concert is a party, an event where audiance and artist create an uplifting atmosphere and that he, as a performer, is responsible for letting you sing and cheer, so you feel like you'r attending a party and he's going to give you everything he has to make the night a big succes....

The italien audience was really quite quiet to my surprise, compared to Vienna in july for example, but nevertheless seemed fascinated and in awe ! And there was no pushing around, which I appreciate !

I just thought the same thing ... the crowd in Vienna sure contradicted the general perception of European audiences! They (we, as I was there, too) really made noise! biggrin

And regarding being fascinated and in awe - and therefore rather quiet - I can completely understand that as well, because I tend to be like that when I see my favorite artist on stage. Prince does move me to sing along, though, because I feel like I want to fulfill his request. He is working hard up there to give everybody a funky time, and it seems to me that he really wants each and every one in the audience to enjoy themselves!

=) I couldn't agree more ... I enjoy Prince in silence sometimes without having to shout out "it's time to get funky" every 5 minutes ... I'm sure an artist has a completely different impression of this when the crowd is just watching & enjoying .... he's on stage seeing a silent audience, and thinks "oh my god, they're not enjoying themselves, I need to do something" ... we love u Prince, never have any doubt about this smile

How true ! I had to use those ear-plugs they gave us in Wiener Stadthalle between the encores, because these guys behind me whistled and shouted like they wanted to kill my ears smile

Does anyone know when they opened the doors? I got stuck in traffic and was too late.. still did manage to get to the second row though... and to the front row, once people went on stage!

The show was great... it was pretty cool, starting the show with the houselights still on... also the encore, again with houselights... quite some people had already left... 2bad though that there was no aftershow... I stuck around until 2, hoping that something would come up!
