Ticket prices Why are the tickets for the European tour so expensive starting at around £75 when Prince tickets for the O2, London were only £31.21? so, what is the answer 2 the question of U

Because. The O2 was cheap, they wanted to make it affordable, accessible, sell 21 nights, etc. Now he just wants to earn a few millions. (USD 2M for Roskilde, so what for the rest? I estimate USD 10M total at least) He's doing it low budget. Small crew of his own. Rented screen, video, whatever. (he lets them go at the end of the mini-tour)
The effects for the fans are clear: the promotors cannot sell tickets as easily and thus plague fans with venue changes, date changes or price changes. The bad thing is that they do not really act responsible here. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I agree with what you say on promoters but Prince is really showing disrespect for his fans...what's new????

Standard price for concert tickets surely? Stop being a tight ass.

There's always a lot of talk on this site about Prince disrespecting his fans, but I think a few people on here need a little reality check.
Firstly I'll admit £80 for a ticket does seem a lot, and it is.
However you shouldn't compare it to £31.21 when you were literally seeing Prince at a bargain basement price due to supply/demand mechanisms. Put things into perspective. You saw one of the greatest live performers for an absolute bargain. It cost me more in petrol to see him than the cost of the ticket itself! I personally count my lucky stars I saw him for such a great deal.
Now people complain he's not still doing concerts for £31.21. What do you expect? I can buy a ticket to see a sub-standard modern band - for personal taste i'll use Snow Patrol as an example for maybe £40 a ticket. Now I'm not going to be nearly as entertained as I would at a Prince concert - a performer who's been honing his craft for 3 decades and more. Jesus christ I couldn't see Miley Cyrus for less than £40! and trust me I don't want to do that! What does that make 2 hours with the purple one worth?
So how he's disrespecting his fans I don't quite understand. I can understand fans who couldn't attend his £31.21 shows being envious as I'm sure I would too if I couldn't. But get in the real world. You're paying a high premium for seeing a higher calibre of act. You get what you pay for. After paying £82 to stand in a field in Belgium at the weekend, I'd certainly rather pay for the Cream.....

Again, see the point of the above orger.
But not disrespecting his fans??!!
Check out the Lotusflower debacle!!!!!
The Croke Park disaster!!!....to which we will now add Geneva!!
He plays outdoors for ridiculous prices just so people can hear Prurple Rain and whatever song he's been "honing" for 30 years.
At least Muse, Madonna and U2 put on a real spectacle for the same price, if not cheaper
And speaking of U2...I'm not going to defend them as they have their faults but at least they have the respect for their fans to apologise on line for their recent cancellations.
What does Price do??? FUCK ALL!
Believe me, I do think that Prince has made some amazing music......
But he's not doing it now and has turned into a stupid little money-grabbing shit who is not even a shadow of his foremer self.
If you want to beleive otherwise, it's your choice
As my beliefs are mine. | |

I think we all know the Lotusflower site was a gamble, dependant on if he got enough people to subscribe to make it worth his while keeping the thing updated. Clearly that didn't happen and granted he missed the ball by not continuing to entertain those that had forked out $77 for it. We all make mistakes....
As for these series of gigs.....
If someone comes to you (imagine you're prince) and says "your purpleness - we'll pay you 10 million to do 7 gigs in europe this summer", what you gonna say. Yes. Then these promoters figure to recoup our 10 mil we'll need to sell tickets at £80 each to make a little cash for our efforts. Given the economic climate they shouldn't be too surprised people aren't snapping their hands off to get a piece of purple. What should Prince do? What can he do? If the promoters dropped the ball and can't sellout a venue cos they overbudgeted, and need to change venue to accomodate a smaller crowd, what can he do? Nothing. Apart from play that venue.
Someone raised a comment moaning he rented a screen for the gigs. How is this disrespecting the fans? The screens were huge. Where's the problem. I don't care if he got given them for free, why does that matter? People bitter he's getting paid for doing his job.
I'll give away my music for free, charge a premium for a great show. Only way to make money in the business these days. How is this wrong when Prince does it.

Stop complaining and enjoy life. With or without Prince. I love Prince and chocolate - in that order

I'm not a tight ass ... just curious about the huge variation in price.
I paid £75 for Arras tickets and travelled from and to London but as far I was concerned it was well worth the money. It was obvious that the venue was undersold and I expect the price does put some people off.
It is amazing that O2 sold out for 21 nights, when Prince is struggling to fill someof these European venues. Maybe he should come back over to London !!
so, what is the answer 2 the question of U

eireboy - don't know if you have been to his recent concerts - but if you have been in Vienna you must admit - it was worth every cent you paid for it - man - an appr. 3 hour concert - packed with a prince in best form - very funky, very soulfull, best guitar-playing on earth - dancing 3 hours - sweating, crying, laughing - thinking of nothing else but how great the concert is - i do not regret any cent - before the concert i also told my friends, that it is not to cheap - esp. as i have been to arras and vienna at golden circle with my wife - so only the tickets cost me about 600 euro for both shows (travel, hotel etc to be added on) - but i am still smiling - it was just great - and as someone other said - will you pay 40 or 50 euro for a one-hit-wonder-band and than complain about 80 euro for an absolut superstar - sure he has no hits on airplay - but do you really like the hits today - for me i just listen to alternative radio stations - i can't stant to hear this shit they play on mainstream radio today. when u saw him in vienna (i was in 3rd row) and u saw him smiling and enjoying the evening - and coming back 5 times - no one does this for money - he did it, because he loved the evening - he loved it seeing us all going funky - and having a really great evening
so stop all you haters - he is in the best form of his life - and he plays concerts no one else can do!!! (and yes - i also go to u2 and pay 110 euro for a shity place - not for standing at the golden circle)
greet walter

How can you complain. You say Madonna is cheaper, that is a karaoke singer. she mimes. What idiot would pay to see someone mime to a song?
Go down your local pub and you will see drag acts the same , but cheaper.

That last line is the best advice I've heard for Prince fans this decade!!!!!!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I believe Madonna (and possibly The Rolling Stones) were responsible for the huge increase in ticket prices so the big stars hiked up theirs too!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You're not wrong Bette and I'm personally not going to defend Lady Mick and his little friends, or Dame Madge for that matter, but at least they put on a show!
Prince used to do this...now it's all just about the dollars....

The Prince shows i saw ( Arras and exspecially Berlin, Werchter and vienna) were some of Prince`s best shows ever. At least from the ones i attended ( more than 30 shows since 1990)... Many of you will say i missed his greatest shows during the 90ies....well i saw them on dvd at least....^^ His concerts are getting better and better...it is just fantastic musicianship from the worlds greatest performer ever: his guitar playing gets better and better....the reaction from the crowds were overwhelming at the last concerts....people were screaming like crazy! The interaction between P and the people were so intense and even in werchter were it was raining, the crowd went wild....i will never forget that....the songlist doesn`t say much....it is the way he is performing them live....his improvisations, the interaction with his band.... In germany and austria the press reviews were nothing but phenomenal.....!!
And all the shows were packed with people...maybe not sold out, but they were full....
14000 in vienna 17500 in berlin 22000 in arras 50000 to 60000 in werchter 70000 in roskilde
People were exhausted after the shows, all of my friends ( a lot of us were sceptical before because of ticket prices, not sold out, bad press ahead etc) agreed that this is one of his best tours ever....
www. Lotusflower.com, Croke park is history....get over it.... The demand for Prince live is huge...the tickets may be too expensive, but at least everyone who was there was satisfied.....
The clips on youtube show it^^

I suppose if I had paid such riculous prices to stand in a field and hear the same ol' songs once again I'd want to convince myself that these shows were great too........
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It is not about the money....if a concert is bad and didN´t cost you anything, it wouldn?t make the concert great.... Same songs over and over again? Well, even the die hard fans loved it when he played Kiss or purple rain....it is about the way he plays them....he played dreamer, old school company....in berlin act of god and the jams and party songs like dancing maschine, dance with me in the disco, controversy were just to funky.... All of your posts show that you are very frustrated....

OK , you got me...I'm especially frustrasted that I didn't get to see the amazing Shelby...not to mention the jams with Larry
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
How can anyone, who hasn't been at these concerts judge them ??? I have been to Arras and to Vienna - and I know what a great time I had - and I still see all those smiling faces around me and after the show - so SHUT UP, if you don't know, what u speaking of or go to a concert and don't speculate. As i mentioned earlier - the concert was worth every cent. Its up to u if you want to see a nowadays mainstream act for 60 or 70 euro that plays shit music and doesn't have any know how to play live or even do their shows playback. Just read all the critics of the last days - they all say in common - he is the best live act on earth!!! I don't need a 360° mega stage or fireworks or flying artists (he all did this once - but came over it - for heavens sake - now it's the music alone - and its the best live music u can get) - I want to see live music by a band that knows how to play live - and that was exact what i got.

Well, ok, that's your opinion. I've been to many of his shows before as well, and I consider the Berlin and Werchter shows simply "Good", nothing else. I think that all of us die-hard fans lowered our expectations.
In the 90s, not the mention the 80s, I was going crazy when a new Prince album was announced. Now, I don't care, I don't even buy it, because I know I can't expect anything remarkable anymore. But still, when he came to tour, I was there, even went outside Germany, to Paris, Den Bosch, Zurich, London, Montreux, Werchter.....because he can perform like nobody else. But thinking about the last 4 gigs I've been to, 2x Montreux, Berlin and Werchter, I have to say, that his performances go down, too.
He mostly plays songs he performed a thousand times before, and they sound as if he didn't want to play them anymore. Maybe he thinks that' what the mass audience wants....but well, he doesn't have that mass audience anymore! There are only die-hard fans left! Also, he tends to play even more cover songs, for whatever reason. He's got so incredibly many brilliant songs of his own, and plays all that cover crap!?
During the Berlin show, when he startet to sing "forever in my life", I thought, yeah, now it's gonna be really great, but he smashed it, continued with "7" and that ridiculuous "guitar". I really wished he'd do something like the ONA tour, that was amazing! Briliant music, mainly not the mainstream songs, great band with horns, and smaller venues. Maybe that's not how he can make big money, but he could create great moments.
And about the ticket prices: in 2008 I was in Berlin at the "Kindlbuehne", also an amphitheater holding some 20.000 people (it was full), and the general price was 40 €, again: 40 €. And the band was the most brilliant band of the past 10 years: Radiohead. They're not showmen like Prince, but their performance was great, even the stage show itself was way more exciting than what Prince did on his recent shows. So, if he goes on like this, I'll get off.

I think a lot of us are already waiting for the train to stop to disembark.
True, I didn't go to the shows ( and from what I've heard about Arras I'm glad I didn't) but this whole tour is just proving to me that P has lost it...along with most of his fans......
