I would guess that he's trying to prime us for the release of those reported 10 albums ready to go - which could mean that we're gonna get our wishes met and get albums like Dream Factory and The Dawn - he seems to be more comfortable with his older material/sound (logically the release of MPLSound tells me that) - right on... headbang

The story about the Diamonds and Pearls tour was about Mike his drummer for that tour/album and who was playing drums during the Conga Room set. Prince talked about one of the shows during the tour where he was counting 1, 2 at the beginning of a song when he heard the sound of the drums banging all around. I guess Mike fell off his stool before the song was going to start. Mike is a big guy. I was fortunate to go to all three shows last night. I just want to add that Prince played with a different band at each show last night. Though, he brought in his harmonica and keyboard player for his encore (Dreamer) during the Conga Room show. During the first show, the harmonica solo was actually to Hendrix's "Little Wing". I would describe the three shows as "Hits", "Rock n Roll" and "Jazz". The band for the first show at the Nokia Theater is his new band. The band for Club Nokia was Renato Neto, John Blackwell and Rhonda Smith. Renato is one of the most talented keyboard players in the world today. (I apologize for any mispellings on names.) The best momment of the night was Chaka Khan. What a treat. Overall, he played for an hour and half for the first show, one hour for the second and hour and a half for the last show. It was a great evening. Oh yeah, the covers to "All Shook Up" and "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends" were awesome. The first time that I had the opportunity to hear them during a show. Despite the sound problems at all three locations it was cool watching the genious handle these types of situations. Prince was very talkative during the shows with stories, interaction with the crowd in the front and during "Play That Funky Music" when he asked a person from the crowd to sing it. Prince enjoyed his time with all of the fans during the show. I hope you enjoy the extra information on the shows. Hopefully for all of us, Prince will be doing more shows and maybe a tour.

My 2 cents:

The 1st show at the Nokia Theater was very cool and the crowd loved it, but the set list was pretty familiar. In fact, it was almost identical to the Tavis Smily Benefit at the Conga Room a few weeks ago. Because of that, I loved it but was ready for something different.

The second show was at The Conga Room and it totally kicked ass!! New Power Trio ripping through a bunch of great songs. Unbelievable!

The third and final show was at Club Nokia [BTW all 3 venues are located within the same complex, which is directly across the street from the Staples Center. The entire complex is called the Nokia Plaza and includes restaurants and other clubs.] I've been reading on the Org how people are drooling over this show in particular. As cool as the set list looks on paper it wasn't quite as cool in person. The first two numbers were done without Prince and they were very slow, meandering, loose, lengthy "jams." For me the gig didn't get exciting until "She Spoke 2 Me." That's when the songs started to have more structure and became more enjoyable. I was totally blown away by "In A Large Room With No Light!" I think each song at this gig featured a LONG solo by Renato. Don't get me wrong, he's a talented guy, but does he need a long, meandering solo with some crazy sound effects for each song? It was too much Renato for me. In fact, that was more
annoying to me than any of the sound problems Prince was experiencing throughout the night. Nonetheless, once the show took off, it really took off. The closing medley of ballads brought the house down! It was a great way to end the night, but I think the Conga Room gig was the best show of the night.

Oh, funniest moment of the night happened at Club Nokia when he mentioned Randy Phillips, owner of AEG (the parent company of the venue):

Prince complained and apologized for the sound system. He said something like "blame the owners of the building, AEG for the sound. The owner is Randy Phillips."

Later when Prince introduced all the band members, he said "me, my name is Randy Phillips." The band leaves the stage.

The audience is cheering and clapping for a encore and a few people around me start yelling "we want Randy!" instead of the usual "we want Prince!" chant

One more thing: did P's jacket at Club Nokia remind anyone of former announcer of The Price is Right? I forget his name. Rodney Pipper or something like that?

Can anyone expound on "In a Large Room With No Lights" a little more. How much did it sound like the recorded version? Who sang the la, la,las? Did the crowd sing along? Did Prince notice the crowd reaction to the song?
Damn I hope he plays it more in the future.

Would have been cool if he invited Wendy and Lisa back for that song.
[Edited 3/29/09 12:05pm]

It was merengue/jazz style which seemed to fit, especially the style of this third performance. Prince did the 'la la la' parts. Barely anybody knew this song. I was was high giving some friends but they didn't know what this song was. I was singing, dying inside and trying to explain all the while trying to take in the significance of what he was singing right there right then.

LOL!! I was right in front of him so i put my hand over my mouth and sang ever lyric, since i'm not suppose to really know that song... and i kept looking behind to see if anyone else was singing
