i went to see Terence Trent D'Arby in London last night and it was awful. now i see why Prince doesn't really worry toomuch about ol TTD. he was so stiff and rigid. the band had the paersonality of a traffic light and the sound was dreadful. i hate to say this since TTD is one of my favourite musicians but it was truly dire. it was as if we were watching a pub band who hadn't rehearsed - ever. did anyone else go?

I saw TTD in Cologne (Kantine) last year and although the show was short (75 minutes or something) it was OK. He played a nice mix of his new material and his older hits.

It was cool to see him so close (and more).

So I'm also wondering what went or was wrong in London.

Oh, yeah. I've attended another recent TTD show in 2002 and it was a really weak band... so different from the artist he used to be in the 90's.

I was so looking forward to possibly seeing a TTD tour in the US... where possibly he might play some smaller venues ... damn!!!

Don't be bummed John C! I was at the show and had a great time.

Granted, the band weren't the greatest musicians in the world, but they did a pretty good job. And TTDs great performance and excellent catalogue of material more than made up for any short comings in their abilities. Some of the tracks could have used a horn section, but I suppose he can't afford the biggest and the best band.

I thought he got a great reception, and he was really appreciative of that.

The night was made even better by TTD coming out after the show to meet the fans. It was a bit manic with a couple of hundred people trying to meet him. When you got to the front TTD was very sincere, he was not flustered by the 100s of people crowding to meet him. He actually listened to whatever question or comment you made, looked you in the eyes, responded, and signed your CD sleeve (or whatever). A very nice guy.

Prince take note. Wildcard was being sold for £8!

Saw TTD at the London Forum last night. The clubsize, theatre venue soon filled up come showtime and the show lasted around an hour and a half.

To be fair the band were adequate IMO, they held down the tune in the background and gave TTD a chance to shine playing guitar, keys and of course running through his distinctive dance repertoire. Admittedly the Italian four-piece didn't command attention individually aside from the guitarists few solos which he handled fine. No real backing vocals.

To the best of my recollection this was the setlist...

Agree with all that Jonpca said...last night was no where near the quality of the recent Prince gigs but give Terrance his dues, the fact that he gave some time to his fans afterwards has to be appreciated (more than the lousy soundcheck Prince gave his Italian fans after 12 or so years, yes I was at Milan).

The pub band and poor sound let him down, I've seen him in 93/95 London and with the right back up he's an excellent performer, not quite in our mans league, but excellent never-the-less.

Pleased to see other Prince fans there, lets hope Terence returns with right set up (if cash flows a problem, he could always hire better musicians by charging his loyal fan base to be part of his music club, say $100 a year??).

Highlights included Holding on to you, boy the man can sing ballads!!

yeah ok i guess i will give him his dues. i have a bootleg of him in Stockholm in 1992/3 (great radio broadcast) and the band he had with him at that show was outta sight. he did an amazing version of "Sign Your Name" that left you with goosebumps. he had Kevin Wyatt on bass (oohh mega).

but i'm sorry, saturday night at the Forum was DREADFUL. i was very disappointed. all that silly dancing like a belly dancer, waving his hands and fingers like that - sorry but it was just plain silly. now don't get me wrong, i will still buy his albums (major label or not) and will continue to listen to the older work, but there was no excuse for Saturday night.
ok i guess financial considerations might have played a part in it as well as far as the quality of the band was concerned. now as for audience attendance, the venue did not fill up as has been written. in fact it was really sparce at the start of the night, just as he went on at 8:30 it filled up a bit more but i reckon only 400 ppl came.
still tho, he's one of my faves.

I saw TTD `94 in Munich. It was easily one of the best concerts i`ve ever seen. So much energy.The NPG visited the concert also, and had a very good time. It was the same venue Prince played the aftershow in `93. TTD perhaps lost his soul due to the fact that he now lives in Munich.

Milty, I gotta say I'm in aggrement with you on the dancing thing, I found myself laughing my head off just now remembering Terrence dancing..I guess I was trying to be postive about the gig...his personal contact at the end was nice, if I'm brutally honest though, yeah it was pretty shit...

I think the dancing is done intentionally in a slightly comedic style. He's having fun at his own expense.

oh yeah and i left after an hour of it all. i just couldn't take it. that guitar player might have well been playing with his dick and not the guitar. he was technically a good musician but boy was he cheesy and technically doesn't always mean soulful, which he wasn't. the drummer played one tempo on the fast tunes and one tempo on the slower tunes. she sounded like a rock drummer playing funk. BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!!! the short of it is that basically that band had no feeling whatsoever.

It's curious that most of the Prince fans are TTD/Sananda fans too. But through the years I met many TTD fans that don't feel much interest in Prince. Sananda doesn't have a numerous fan base nowadays. ... One day, sooner or later, Prince and TTD fans had to split its ways.

Speaking of TTD, I am listening to Wild Card at this moment...And so far so good.

Well, I was at the show as well and I loved it. Sananda definetely still is a great live performer and I loved every second of the show!! Don't forget his band is not together for too long and they changed the keyboard player about 2 weeks ago. Of course a horn section would be cool, but wasn't it wonderful to listen to Sananda singing a cappella? And Sananda's dancing style has always been "uniqe", not just on this tour

I've never seen TTD on stage in person. But all I know is that in the studio, TTD is the only artist I can think of that rivals Prince. He's a true artist.
