Purplecam's take on Friday's Charity show and Aftershow Here's my take on Friday's show. I got to the Hotel Gansevoort at 6:30 and I met up with my best friend Amalia, funkteer here and HQ and we got all of our info from Prince's people as to what to do and where to be. We got inside the hotel at around 8pm, give or take and Peacefulwild, DP and I including our guests went with the rest of the crowd to the Penthouse of the hotel, where there was a decent side room, open bar and a pool where you could see Jersey and the lower Manhattan skyline. At around 8:45pm, all of us were let inside and Funkteer and I made it to the front! We could see the band lounding in a room next to where we were standing and then at 9:15pm, things got rolling with the band in position and Prince emerging from the back! He thanked Randee St Nicholas for making the book and said that with all that was happening with "Black Friday" as he put it with the Stock Market and all, he wanted to make us feel better and he did! Here was the setlist for the Charity show:
-New Song - kinda bluesy and heavy on guitar -1999 - never thought I'd see him play this song live but it was GREAT! He changed the words, "The sky was all purple" to "The Stock Market was crashing, there were people running everywhere" Very clever -I Feel 4 U -Controversy with and R&B Jam and part of Housequake -Sexy Dancer with Le Freak fron Chic mixed in- that was HOT -Prince did Miss You from the Rolling Stones -He did this joke that was funny as hell, at least I thought it was. Someone screamed out "Purple Rain" and it went like this, "You know how you in the airport & they scream out "Purple Rain!" We say 'No, the name's Rihanna" -Satisfied - in a blues version -Begging Woman's Blues -Mr Hayes Solo -Purple Rain - the guy got his wish -Love Bizarre - wonderful -Shelby J singing "What is Hip?" -Stratus - rock jam _Cream - lots of fun! -U Got the Look - I was having a ball at this point -Shelby singing Sarah McLaughlin's "Angel"- amazing -Nothing Compares 2 U - nice way to end this part of the night Now for the aftershow. It started at 1:10am and it lasted for almost 3 hours. It was crowded in their like rush hour on the NYC Subways but the show was worth it and I was back up front again! The setlist was: -Crimson and Clover - I don't know who does this but it was hot. It was mixed in with "Wild Thing, I think I love you" something like that -Prince did Let's Go by The Cars -7 -Come Together by The Beatles -1999 - regular lyrics this time -Controversy -Sexy Dancer/Le Freak -A song by America but I don't know the name -Shhh -Musicology w/Prince and The Band mixed in -3121 - one of the highlights of my night! --Girls and Boys -Shelby J singing "Honky Tonk Woman" -Stratus -Miss You -Red House (?) -Purple Rain -Dave Chapelle came on stage and did some jokes during intermission. He popped up on there earlier in the aftershow but I don't remember the song he came up on and he played tambourine for a moment -Shelby J sang India Arie's "Brown Skin" and Ledisi's "In The Morning", i think it's called that -Prince sang EWF's Can't Hide Love - another highlight for me as I love that song and to hear Prince sing it including the "Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh" at the end was ecstacy for me -Marva King sang a Chante Moore song but I don't know the title -Prince sang "I Want To Break Free" I don't know who does that song -Cream -U Got The Look -Prince, Marva and Shelby sang Janet's "What Have U Done For Me Lately" =Partyman - big fun -Prince sang "It's Alright" -Alphabet St. - more fun -Prince sang The Bird and Jungle Love by The Time - I was SHOCKED AND AMAZED! THE highlight of the evening by far! I was out of my mind at this point! -Prince, Marva and Shelby sang Sheila E's, The Glamorous Life - I was too happy -Love Bizarre with the Housequake Chant- even better than the 1st show and a kickass way to end the night! I met such great people and hung out with many friends and it made the experience the best Prince experience I've ever had. I met Marva, Morris and Shelby and they were so nice. Marva tried to get me on stage but there were too many folk preventing that . Thank you to HQ and the org and Prince and the NPG for making this happen for us. Prince had said in the first show that maybe they should do 21 Nights in NYC. To that, I say BRING IT ON!!!!! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Those wanting to know what Prince wore, he was in all black during the whole Charity show. Black turtleneck sweater, bell bottom pants, black heels and some big diamond necklace that looked like it made up a face.
Aftershow, he started off wearing big shades, a white turtleneck with a scarf that seemed attached to it, black bell bottoms and big flip flops with white socks. He changed into a brown shirt with brown socks and flip flops. His hair looked like he's gotten a haircut but not a new hairstyle. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Nice report, so I quess Prince is starting a new trend....wearing flip flops with your funky attire. I think 21 nights in NYC would be totally fun. I've never been there & I'm sure I will have a ball. Was Dave Chappelle funny? Did he crack on anyone in the audience? [Edited 10/13/08 15:24pm]

[Edited 10/13/08 15:24pm] Dave Chappelle was there but I don't think his standup was as funny as his usual works. Anyway it was good to see him there and he did come on for a short while.

Hey, nice report.
So the pics with the black sweater and necklace are from the main show. I didn´t know that, I assumed that those were from the aftershow because the stage looks so small.Anyway, great report. So how different was the aftershow version of Purple Rain from the one at the main show ? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

[Edited 10/13/08 15:24pm] Oh Dave was definately funny. It was funny seeing him have to improvise since he wasn't a part of the bill for the show and he did great! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I know you won to go to the main show. How did you end up at the afterset? I brought tickets for the aftershow. I asked Gav and Anx if the win for the Charity show carried over to the aftershow and they said that they didn't think so I thought alright, I need to make sure that no matter what happens, I'm in there for the aftershow and I'm so glad I got the tickets for me and funkteer! That show was HOT! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Dude I'm so sorry! I was going to write this when I got home but I got hoe at 5:40am and I was TIRED. Plus, I had a trip planned for New England and I had to meet my friends at 9am so I had to leave my house at 8am. My brain was fried and sadly I wasn't able to find a computer but better late than never right?! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. So how different was the aftershow version of Purple Rain from the one at the main show ? Mmmm, to be honest with you, I can't remember. There may have been more guitar in the aftershow than the charity cause Prince had time to do what he wanted to with the Aftershow. That's the best I can come up with. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". [Edited 10/13/08 15:24pm] I had a cocktail dress on with uncomfortable shoes for the first show. I bought a pair of Easy Spirit black mules, that I changed into for the second show. I can totally relate to his need for comfort. My right foot was numb for 24 hours after the shows. Prince would look fine in anything! that's because there's an orger named funkAteer who IS a guy. Years ago, I tried to pick funkateer as an AOL name and it was taken, so I dropped the "a" and became funkteer. I use this name on HQ too. I am most definitely a woman. "It's hard 4 me 2 say what's right when all I want to do is wrong..."
