Musicology Tour DVD (revisited) Hey,
Blast from the past this, but I dug out the concert DVD from Musicology tonight. Absolutely brilliant gig, some fantastic versions ... Sign O The Times and DMSR stick out for me. Only one complaint, and it's a big one ... There is some tone-deaf woman sitting way too close to an audience mic. She sounds like a talentless cat in excrutiating agony. She's particularly noticable (and therefore infuriating) during SOTT and Purple Rain. Surely when they were mixing this for theatres, they could have mixed that mic out? Anyway, that aside ... great night reliving a superb gig. L [Edited 6/27/08 15:45pm] I'm just, I'm just Levi from the org

Did you buy it in a store? No, it was an 'unofficial' recording. I think the film which was used for movie theatres leaked out. L I'm just, I'm just Levi from the org

Nope, I guess they wouldn't be allowed to sell it!
Well, the recording obviously is official, it just wasn't supposed to leak out and be available anywhere else besides those cinemas for that one night! [Edited 6/28/08 9:40am]

There were much better shows later in the tour. The show was simulcast live to theatres.

Yeah, you're right actually. 'Superb' doesn't really describe the gig very accurately; it was a bit mundane (by his own high standards). I think it's the quality of the footage which sets it apart from most 'unofficial' releases. Hadn't realised it was broadcast live. Thanks for clarifying. That explains the lack of editing of the tone-deaf horror-woman. She really does have a voice which makes finger nails on blackboards sound like a beautiful symphony. Yes I agree the LA recording is dull compared
to the concerts that followed later in the tour. LA was pretty much a first run (getting the kinks out) and expectingly wouldn't have the electricity the other shows had. I've found with Prince, because he does it live, the further into a tour the better it gets. Or if he does a few nights in your town, it's guaranteed the last night will be off the chain. I can't speak for the other gigs, but if you say L.A. wasn't off the hook that opening night you weren't there. I was. And trust, the place was juiced. Maybe it didn't come across on the DVD.
