Thanks for the report!
Are the timings correct? It's a short show then...
But he did do AUTOmatic. More lines of the lyrics than in Oberhausen?

I was there too and have to say I was a bit disappointed they didn't do as much jamming as I expected. Some more guitar stuff by P would have been nice, instead of the sometimes tiring horn solos.

The things he did on guitar were funky as hell, though!
And the band was real real tight, incl. horn section riffs.

Further, I would have liked to hear more off TRC instead of when u were mine, purple rain, take me with u and all these crowd pleasers. Older songs I liked very much were

SOTT (only the ending sounded psychedelic to me)
the ladder (despite a bit of preaching & no guitar)
pop life (great unison kicks in 2nd or 3rd verse)
sometimes it snows (too short, unfortunately)

The rework of strollin' (that was the only time he played the hollow body jazz guitar) didn't really come across for me.

I also think he shouldn't have let the audience sing lines in so many songs, a few more chants like "it ain't over" and "shake" would have been cooler. I always get the feeling that artists lose some of their expression/passion when they don't sing the whole song themselves. I have to add that the purple rain chorus sung by the audience really moved me, although I would have liked to hear something else instead as I said before.

The sound wasn't too good (heavy distorted guitar was sometimes far too loud, could barely hear the drums behind it), but at Hallenstadion, it never is.

Talking of drums, JB really is an unbelievable player! Last time I saw P or at that time The Artist was Zurich 98 and I was kinda disappointed with Kirk Johnson...

So glad he finally found somebody more than worthy of stepping into Michael B.'s shoes!

I'd like to know what other people think of the Zurich show, looking forward to your posts...

he started that on piano, stepped forward to center stage after the 1st chorus and then his guitar tech handed him habibi...

hey dynamite! this is an excellent review, and i agree with u in every word! great doing man! u should write the review 4 the newspapers... i am very eager 2 read them! well, i have posted (sorry i am overfonked and it is way out 2 read.. just my brainbubble... b4 i go 2 bed) on anohter site... check this:

yo peeps, just got back from zurich ... well, what 2 say? soundcheck started and we had 2 wait about 20? minutes till we could enter the "stage" he then played supersticous by stevie W. , a phat controversy mixed in2 a great rockin rave version! and lots of candy sax sexophon
not much conversation... he brubbled something like this... ah, good morning... just got up...suddenly (i guess after 45 minutes all in all) he left and said.. yopp, cu l8, we R back in a minute (?)

20.08 - main gig started... band started playing... trc start... jazzy flavoured... cool, 2nd comes pop life! he had switzerland... the fonk was back and peeps went crazy! (cos they knew this .. u know the hits, olda stuff) then l8 (sorry can't manage 2 give a proper setlist... right now...) PR, a superbus cool strollin, a fooonky! hardcore sign o' the times! and highlight 4 me... u gotta shake something and fineshed after 7 min. brake (then came piano medly.. and hits, shortys, jazz styled) 2 finish 22.20 with days of wild!!! hottie! off the hook, strange 2 finish with this, when it comes 2 funk N rock (guitar playing) he showed that he's the one and only..(even did santana medly combined in other song) i guess lots of NON princees had a blast as well and could not believe what happend... well, all in all we got all, trc jazzy , rockinfunkinstyle shakin that ass big band candy greg ronda Blackterrywell! renato and baldheaDJ ... also there was a stage dance ... by 4 girlsNboys... they had 2 shake 2 princes bootieroutine... N'synch u know iam saying wink ... all in all a nice, but (4me) way 2 short concert (and 2 much hits, and 2 much songs sung by the crowd... don't like that 2 much... ).. with some Xcellent passages, and a terrible good start! duno.. but i thought he would play bit longa and interact more.. as well as the stage surprises (was no girl on stage on the cussions and served with npg wine) , well, his dressing, soundcheck he was all black with his snowboots, and pull/hat, maingig, all white (pull snowhoes wink l8, after brake! 2 sexy suit.. and l8 4 the finish he had the funky hat on)... i must say...
i missed eric leeds and also i guess he did not gave 2 much place 4 the band.. especially ronda and blackwell (he's just incredible! love his playing style, very precise! phatt!) maybe bit 2much 4 the sax/horns? ah, and kirky was not there either (berlin he was...)

well, after lights on (DOW) afterparty/show was announced in kaufleuten (same club as he per4med in 93 and 98) and members had easy access (at least it worked very fine 4 us... maybe 5min. waiting) but i hear l8 that others had probs.. and about thousand peeps still waited outside at one o'clock...
well, what happend? well, DJ doodley (miss my bro jules) spinned some old tunes combined with some house traxs... and some npgmc member songs from last years.. then prince and band! (whole, and CANDY) came on... the shaked their booties, shook hands, wildsigned, flashed around, partygigging flutechampaign d.m.s.r. flava... nothing but cool... i mean instruments where ready (as i was tols by a techie.. behind the scenes)... but milano is waiting 4 a fresh prince N the band (totos friends experience was there as well! i guess they will bring him down 2 milano wink so he did not (or at least as long as i was there) per4m... even everybody hyped or hoped it... there was still a chance when i left.. but we had a blast anyway cos there were many traxs from ona live played! pass the peas... cool u know am saying? well, prince got a red rose from a girl and was happy shakin' his booty from side 2 side and sittin and watching on the balcony.. the NPG was in the house! hot with u! was princes way 2 amuse himself... the roof was on fire... and everybody chilled and was happy... hope lil man did not start 2 play l8, or right now... cos i remember 98 when we were about 2 leave when he suddenly started on 3.30 and played 4 an hour... time they are a changing... but keep the fonk alive... more details l8, need some sleep, gotta 2 the work! (but i am not willing do so... btw) peace N bwild, silvershoe fonky flava fabhouse

yes, udo, theyR right, and u2, it was a shorty... (way 2 short 4 me, duno why? curfew? bad sounding? prince headache? 2 tired from paris marathon? 2 many members in front sector (guess about 500 npmc members. not 2 bad) ?
we will never know.. but also not a lot conversation, not 2 much preaching (bit during the ladder, but that was okay), more or less no real joke (besides the N'synch pop commentary) - a nice , but short show... with some excellent highlights, sign and strolling 4 me (looking 4ward 2 rotterdam 2 hear something from the new cds approaching us, such as: last december, xenophobia,) best of and ona we had now, so do some small club stuff!)

Soundcheck (25 min)

It was more like 15 minutes. I must say that I was pretty disappointed by the short soundcheck and the short concert. I guess Prince does not particularly like Switzerland... Oh, well, at least I shook Prince's hand at Kaufleuten. smile

I wonder, that nobody noticed his reaally bad Voice. So he cut short the Piano medley after Adore. The Band was pretty surprised. The Paris gigs didn´t only have influences to the physis of the Fans.

Anyone had the same impression?

How many Euro concerts are left? 3, right? I hope he manages to do these, and then take a break until the japanese tour starts.

For those who don't understand german: Bakira said Prince is hoarse after the two Paris gigs.

...I wonder, that nobody noticed his reaally bad Voice, hey bakira, u might b right with ur theory, cos i was deep into thinking what went wrong yesterday... also during soundcheck he said quite nothing... (no conversation with us) and during maingig he mostly let us sing the verse... and piano medly was very shorty, right...but most of all, accustic is just bad... i hate this hallenstadion... there are much better (smaller) places... anyway, considering that prince is "just" humain beeing we should say thank u in every way, cos he still per4med phat! and the masses did not notice a difference, cos they did not know him and so on... he's so much gifted and the band is heavy stuff! great musicians!

Would a hoarse singer wear his shirt open till the belly like he did yesterday at the Kaufleuten? But the concert was indeed disappointing. When do we finally get something better than the Hallenstadion? ...and the Kaufleuten?
