PRINCE? Will Smith to host Nelson Mandela's Hyde Park birthday concert
By Sophie Borland Last Updated: 2:14am GMT 08/03/2008 Nelson Mandela has asked the Hollywood star Will Smith to host his 90th birthday concert in London this summer, the Sun has reported. Nelson Mandela and singer Beyonce Knowles at an Aids benefit concert in Cape Town in 2003 The actor, 39, who began his career on the American TV series The Fresh Prince, is expected to play a major part in the concert in Hyde Park in June, according to the newspaper. Smith is said to be a big fan of the former president of South Africa and when approached was very keen to help out. The concert is being organised by 46664, Mr Mandela's campaign against Aids organisation, and other leading artists such as Queen, U2, the Spice Girls and Annie Lennox have been asked to perform. The name of the charity, pronounced 'four double six six four', is derived from Mr Mandela's prison number while he was being held on Robben Island, off Cape Town in South Africa. He was prisoner number 466, imprisoned in 1964 and the Robben Island prisoners were never referred to by their names, but rather by their numbers and year of imprisonment, so 46664 was Mr Mandela's number. The campaign began in 2003 as Mr Mandela's response to raise awareness of the global HIV/aids epidemic through a series of high-profile concerts and celebrity endorsements. The first event was held in Cape Town in November 2003 and Bob Geldof performed along with several other well known artists. Smith is said to be a fan of the former South African president Since then there have been a series of concerts in George, South Africa (2005), Madrid, Spain (2005) and Tromso, Norway (2005). The 90th birthday party in Hyde Park on June 28 is expected to be one of the biggest concerts of the year, and people have already been asked to register their interest for tickets on the official website of the campaign. Organisers of the event are even reported to have been trying to tempt the controversial rap artist Eminem to take part in spite of his outspoken lyrics. The artist, who retired two years ago, was forced to apologise in 2003 for an old track in which he referred to black women as "dumb chicks". | |
