I was just wondering - about how long before the actual concert are the aftershows announced - i would like to book a hotel close to the action if possible. Other than that i might have to take the wife to copperface jacks!!!
also folks where do the tickets for the aftershows actually go on sale?? thanks in advance!

The "process" has varied from tour to tour. Accordingly, like anyone else, I can only speculate.

In the post-NPGMC era, it is likely that any aftershows will be announced on terms similar to those for the 7/7/7 1st Avenue aftershow or the the Koko gig in London before the 21 Nights -- an announcement on the selected venue's website a few days in advance, with ticket sales taking place either online or at the venue only a day or two before the gig. On 7/7/7, 1st Avenue aftershow tickets went on sale the day of the main show, but that appeared to have been the result of the decision to move the aftershow from Paisley Park to 1st Avenue only a day or two before it happened.
Also observe whether what gets advertised is an "aftershow" or an "afterparty."
As you may know, only the first designation implies a performance.

This is critical. At the 2002 Indianapolis concert, the announcement included a phrase like "after-show party and performance." It was made clear to everyone that Prince was going to play again that night.

OTOH, if the announcement is simply for an "afterparty," attending will most likely involve paying a hefty cover charge for admission to a nightclub and maybe a brief glimpse of Prince (who tends to spend most of his time in a VIP-only area). You'll probably be disappointed.

But remember, this is Prince we're talking about -- he's known for occasionally doing something completely unexpected. You might just get lucky with a surprise performance at an afterparty, and you're certainly going to kick yourself if you miss out. Some suggestions for deciding whether to take the risk, all from personal experience:

1) If they announce an "afterparty," consider the venue. Is it a place that regularly has live music? If it's not, such as a dance club, the chances of a performance go way down, simply because they don't have most of the necessary equipment in place.

2) Also, if you go to the afterparty location, consider the cover charge. The higher the cost of admission, the more likely it is that he'll play.

3) If you have access to the floor seating area, look for NPG band members hanging out before the show, and ask them what they know about after-concert plans. At a 1998 concert, I chatted with Mr. Hayes for a few minutes, and at one point, I simply asked him whether he thought the odds of an aftershow were good. He told me he didn't think it would happen that night, and as he suggested, the afterparty that night was nothing more than an afterparty.

4) Consider what the tour schedule looks like for the next few days. If he's doing another show the next night in another city, he's less likely to do an aftershow. By contrast, he did that 2002 Indianapolis aftershow immediately before a three-week break in the tour schedule.

There were exceptions to prove the rule, but if my memory serves me correct P showed up every time there wasn't a show the next night and rarely when there was.
