Prince Duz It 4 the Mums!

I don’t know if I am speaking for just myself or for all of us of a certain age (myself: 39, still hot, actually!) or with kids (myself: 3, all under 6!) but Prince and his 21 nights have actually reconnected me with music, with live music, with my youth, with all those memories associated with his songs (screaming along word for word to the whole of the Purple Rain album, naughty nights to the soundtrack of the Love Symbol album, crying like a saddo in my room as a teenager to Sometimes in Snows in April…) with my sense of adventure, my inner foxiness and my love of dancing round the room like a nutter singing at the top of my voice.

I may be a sensible mother of three but it has been damn good fun to obsess about getting tickets, feverishly examine setlists for the aftershows, cry over Purple Rain and most importantly, sing and dance myself into a frenzy to fantastic, fantastic music.

I have now rediscovered brilliant songs that I may never have played again: Peach, Blue Light, Slow Love, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, Hot Thing, 7, Gett Off, Adore, I Could Never Take the Place of your Man, Pink Cashmere etc etc etc…the list goes on and on…

Love them! Love singing them to my kids! Love Prince!
London, I aint got no more hits!

Yeah me too! I've hardly even been out since my little girl Ellie was born in 2002 so going to the Prince shows at the 02 this year have really awakened me. Even managed to take Ellie with me to one of the shows on 31st August and it's great to share my love of Prince with her.

My kids were too young to take (5, 2 and 6 months) but I have subjected them to a lot of full-blast Prince over the last week or so. They either join in with the manic dancing or give me that "Mummy's gone mad" look again!

I'm a 40 something Mom with My oldest being 23 and my youngest 9. I had the privilege of seeing Prince 3 times this year in different settings. I am still in awe of his performances that I seek out the vintage Prince and still find little gems (i.e. Do me, baby on Oprah, Electric Chair on SNL, or America extended with the drum solo). I will never tire of them and my kids know that I'm gaga over him. My youngest even asked if I love Prince more than Daddy. I told her NO justing his singing....I won't go into the dancing or playing piano and guitar the way he does.

I've got 2 kids age 3 & 1 and after this summer feel like I have woken up and remembered who I am and it's an amazing feeling! Even if my husband does think I am losing it a bit. Good news aswell that so many of us are bringing up a whole new generation of Prince fans. My 3 year old girl loves him!

Easter

This is what has been one of the greatest things about 'the summer that changed everything' - for some of us I don't think that is an exaggeration. I think it's easy to just put your kids lives at the forefront of everything you do, and almost 'forget' that you were once young, had passions and dreams etc. Well this summer, I have 'remembered' that I am a passionate woman - who LOVES Prince, adores going to concerts and generally - used to be able to have a good time and party all night. OK - the 'all night' bit isn't quite so true now (though did stay up through a couple of aftershows!). I think it's also great for my kids (2 8yr old twins) to see their mum still 'living it up' at 34. I work bloody hard, and my kids get the best of whatever I can manage to get them - so how about I have some fun too? Prince got me through my teens, and he has got better (I think) with age - and guess what... I think I have too! lol

If anybody asks you, I belong to Prince....

I dont think of myself as old at 31 but i guess i am no teeny anymore.
I remember buying sign o times dvd for my 17yh birthday and getting asked if i was 15.
There is no better music for a teen girl to listen to. Prince wrld opens your eyes to amazing music, sexuality and everything else he does.
I am now a mum to a 4 and 3 year old and this summer has taken me back to those exciting days and nights in my room pretending i was mayte or appolonia and befrending the class nerd because he had sky tv and could tape me the beautiful experience.
When i was 15 i was obsessed but didnt think of going to a concert as i didnt have anyone who would take me or pay for it. One night my uncle called to speak to my mum. I knew something was going on as he was working at celtic park in glasgow. When she came off the phone she asked me if i wanted to go see prince the next day.

OH MY GOD, i was a freaky mess.
Ran downstairs screaming and crying. I put on purple rain and dreamed of the next day.
I felt this way again this summer and it is so amazing to feel like a carefree passionate young thing again.
I dont know about appolonia or mayte but i dreamt of a night with prince after every concert and my husband lets me off.
Bless him u leave wanting more no matter how many times u see him.

Well I'm not a mum but my mum is smile. Not sure that she'd could be described as yummy anymore now that she's in her 60's but I took her to the main and aftershows on the 13th September and she had a thoroughly great time. She liked Prince before I did, so it seemed like a great way to say thanks for all the baby sitting she was doing for us over the course of his stay.

Ahh that's lovely..well obviously her good taste rubbed off! I hope I get to do the babysitting for my daughter while she goes to a Prince concert one day!
Well I'm a 40 yr old mum and I think this summer has been one of the happiest ones of my life for all the reasons stated here..and I got to touch my hero too!! Only thing I wouldn't do now would be to wear the tight black catsuit I wore in '88 ( What was I thinking? smile !)

So glad so many of us have had a similar experience! At times thought I was the only crazy obsessed mamma!
I am thinking of hiring a Prince tribute act for my 40th next year, although maybe
that would annoy all my guests as I'd be the only screeching along to all the songs whilst everyone else just looked bemused!

Glad Prince has helped so many of us reclaim our youth and our passion!

PS. My brother lives in the US temptingly close to Paisley Park (about 20 mins away)...perhaps I could send him there to borrow a cup of sugar and petition for Prince's return to the UK...

God I'm pleased to see this string! I'm 45 and I could have written the OP message. I took my 14 year old daughter to the concert on the 17th August as a birthday present (mine!). We were both blown away, so I obsessively searched for some tickets for the final night - we were there, both crying during Purple Rain and hugging for Nothing compares 2U, it was phenomenal and something we will share forever - everyone else is fed up of us ranting about it. As a direct result I have joined a local gospel choir - I feel like I have re-found music - and all thanks to the Purple One!

Love them! Love singing them to my kids! Love Prince!

Go for it!! I was going to do something like that for my 40th this year..but luckily the shows got announced so I got tickets for my birthday instead. It would be great idea. Especially now after all the setlists we've heard and the aftershows..add some George Clinton, Some Sly etc. How could anyone not love it!! If it's all your family and friends around you.. I have talked my 8yr old daughter into electric guitar lessons ONLY because I want her to play like Prince! She can hardly lift the bloomin thing, let alone play it but we are in term 2 now and she can play Smoke on The Water. You never know!
