I've seen glowsticks at a lot of concerts in the last year or two, believe me it wasn't Prince's idea.

2 shows at Musicology and then @ the 777 show we brought glowsticks with us.

My husband insisted we bring enough to pass around at all 3 shows to light up the section we were sitting in.

He stuffed his pockets so full I was sure security would take them from us every time! lol

When we were walking into the Target Center on 777 we shuffled in with two couples who each had 2 kids with them who were MISERABLE.
Giving them glowsticks put a smile on their faces even in those conditions!

We get the rainbow packs, but doing all purple is a very nice touch.
I bet that was a beautiful sight to see. biggrin

I think now that purple glow sticks at Prince concerts will be the norm. I certainly will be loading myself up with them if I'm ever lucky enough to see him again. I think that purple glow sticks will replace lighters and mobile phones to light up arenas, even if he never sings Purple Rain ever again bawl

biggrin That was our thoughts on the glowsticks as well. We hated the lighters at concerts and thought this was a much better way to have a light source.

One chic at the Chicago Musicology asked me if I thought I was at the fair or a carnival because I had glowsicks. . . she was obviously clueless as too what was cool.

I'd have to say that no way was the glowstick idea Prince's, he just took an idea and made it his own.

looking at the superbowl footage now, i would say, no, not glowsticks en masse
it looks like either phones or some kind of torch or reflective device. You can tell it's not glowsticks from-

1. the shape 2. The way they shine when they point at the camera.

Besides in terms of "did it first", i gave out 1200 on NYE in my club. I am sure it's been done before.

I wasn't saying he was the first one to do it! Just asking if they had been handed out at the superbowl...

The pic of the superbowl you have posted looks more like a lighting effect of stars coming down from the ceiling and onto the audience.
The points of light are all different sizes and has more of a white tint, but I could be wrong.

I never heard/read anything about glowsticks at the Superbowl for Prince's performance.
BUT, I am calling dibs on glowsticks to support the team colors of this years Superbowl champs though!!!
That would be a rad color vs. color visual in a stadium!
biggrin A new excuse to order some glowsticks. biggrin

I think the idea of bringing purple glowsticks to the London show came from a thread here on the concert forum. . . don't know who posted it.

The idea most definitely did come from here - Glyn and Popelife masterminded it.

I thought so...

I think it was an original idea by the fams on here(they weren't copying the SB on purpose) I'm just mentioning that it seems to have been done before in an organised way at the SB which would imply it wasn't stolen from the Org wouldn't it? Its hard to say anything on here without people getting very touchy! lol They are only glowsticks smile

I think if Prince had planned the glowstick thing all along, he would not have waited until the last night to distribute such.

Besides, the whole "PRINCE STOLE OUR IDEA!" thing makes a much more fun story. smile

Hi - not sure about what happened at the Superbowl as unfortunately I wasn't there! However, I'm sure a US orger would be able to clarify what the set up was there with regard to glow sticks (if that is what they were!) Certainly though with the final night 02 show it was definitely an idea which was borne on here and Prince stole it!

Hear you but I still maintain that the throwing of glow sticks was undertaken by the minority and if people really wanted to throw things at Prince then it's just as easy to throw a lighter at him if that's what they wanted to do. Or a water bottle (minus the lid). wink

How on earth do you consider this thread to be anal? It's a forum. If somebody asks a question then people are naturally going to give their opinions as to what they think the answer is. It's nothing to do with egos. What a ridiculous statement.

I was quoting both of you! We're only trying to help in answering the query you raised. Of course none of us know for sure so we're just giving our opinion. In my opinion, for what it's worth (!), it does seem a coincidence at the very least that with all the talk on here about doing glow sticks on the 21st, that we turn up on the night and they're handing them out at the door! There was also talk at the time of Prince (or certainly those close to him) reading the Org so it's certainly feasible that "somebody" nicked the idea from here. Sorry I haven't been able to shed any light on your original question which was about the Superbowl glow sticks but I'm sure that somebody out there will be able to help and I hope they don't get called anal and egotistical (not by you) for doing so.

anyone know for sure about the supebowl to answer the original point before we all go mad! lol

I did think it was odd when we turned up on the 21st and I thought 'ooh someone must have read the org' but now having seen more pics of the superbowl I doubted it, thats all folks smile

I know. I was there! But the missile throwers were still in the minority. Of 20,000 people, not even a quarter of them were throwing glow sticks. It was bad though. I was in 102 and was ducking out of the way. It was quite scary. How nobody lost an eye I'll never know.
