Generally, I find that the more electronic, slick productions sound better on CD (Black Sweat, Kiss) whereas the more organic sounding songs (especially the rockier ones) sound better live (Purple Rain, Joy In Repetition). Some of the more traditionally funky stuff is better live too.

Better Live: Guitar - It worked great at the Dome, a right crowd rouser. However, let's face facts here - as a piece of song writing it's pretty dire by Prince's standards. The chorus, as has been pointed out in over 90% of the album reviews, is a U2 lift, and the verse is a direct lift from Girls & Boys, just sung at a higher pitch.

Better on CD: 3121 - This is more of a track than a song. A piece of studio mastery (with more than a passing nod to Kid A-era Radiohead) which sounds amazing on record but less so in a band setting. Just doesn't work for me live at all.

CONTROVERSY, GUITAR and PEACH sounded much better live. BTW LOVE BIZARRE - Is there a studio version or just the Shiela E version.

3121 live is Killer!!! especially the way he sings the last verse ..LOCK THE DOOR UNTIL U C THE SUN WE'RE GONNA PARTY LIKE THERE AIN'T GONNA B ANOTHER ONE

there is so much passion in his vocals than on the cd track. not saying i don't love the cd version either..

I totally agree with u. The funky/rockier numbers are great live, and sound better live. I did notice though that Prine tried to make Kiss sound abit rocky in this tour just gone.

The only one I don't think worked well overall live was "anotherloverholenyohead".

I mean, the guitar breaks were incredible - and the strobe lighting made the whole experience pretty trippy.....but the chord sequence in the verses just doesn't lend itself to a heavy live reading - at least, not the way P & the NPG were doing it at the aftershows.

I'm sure it could work given the right arrangement though.....

The chorus rocked though - I pretty much lost my voice singing along biggrin

The studio version is still ahead of its time over 20 years after its original release - it doesn't get any better than this.

I agree - I was gutted to miss him doing it and a bit taken aback when I watched the video. I've really loved the live arrangements of every other song but this one lost it a bit for me- didn't seem to have that amazing rolling momentum of the studio version.

I'm sure it was great to be there though - I'm probably just jealous! smile

I remember Kiss live on the Lovesexy tour and it was banging, there was more bass and it was really funky, but Kiss played by his current band sounds weak in comparison, not that it aint good just ok.

Anotherloverholeinyohead is amazing live, love this song and gets better every time I hear it.

Shame we didn't hear the likes of Gett Off, My Name is Prince, Endorphin Machine, Sexy MF...

Kiss on the final night had a heavy groove to it. Best version I'd heard.

Chelsea Rogers live?! In a word? Shit.

Perhaps it's the acoustics not working well in such a large venue.

Oh and Purple Rain live? Hmm. It's too bloody short and he hits too many duff notes.

I'm more of a funky rocker so I like it when the songs get a heavy groove under them. Sometimes though I can hear the implied rhythm or riff behind a song and that's also cool. It's an odd thing that. Kiss on that final night had it smile You just now it's boiling underneath but it just keeps itself locked in and real tight. Now Controversy on the other hand... well that baby just rocks the fucking house down! Don't think there will ever be a better song to dance to live smile

well I would take witness prince play live over listening to a CD, but if I had to choose specific tracks...

The song that has most impressed me this summer live is probably U Got The Look. I was never too crazy about the studio version, not one of my faves by any means.. but the live version this summer? HELL YEAH! I remember at the end of Cream on the 20th I was already bouncing up and down in anticpipation of that riff.

Other standouts for this summer me have been that guitar in the The Question Of U, and the full-on guitar reworking of Anotherholenyolobster.

In general live terms, I still remember being blown way at Earls Court in 1992 when he played Gett Off, with the guitar to the forefont of the sound. Incredible.

"Chelsea Rodgers" was really tight and funky in the Indigo2 on the 9th Sept but I think the song loses some energy when it is played in the big arena.

And as for Purple Rain, I'm kinda impartial to it because I've heard it so many times, but I have to admit that I was nearly in tears on the 21st cry it does make a really good anthem.

Actually Anotherlover was one of my favourite live songs! It's so heavy live! Also I like it when they go into "Rock Lobster" or what ever the part at the end is called!

Also I prefered the live version of "Take me with u" over the studio version! "U got the luck" and "Shh" live was also awesome!

I do prefer the studio versions of "Kiss" and "Black sweat" though! The live version of the latter wasn't working at all!
