20 years ago (?) C4 screened a Prince concert

Apologies for the rather vague thread but I'm hoping that someone can help me out on this one.

Back in the late 1980's C4 (UK TV station) broadcasted a Prince concert. I think I have it on VHS tape somewhere as well. Does anyone else remember this and if so was it a one-off performance or part of a tour, if so which one.

If I can find the tape I just hope it has stood the test of time.

Any recollections on this would be appreciated.

Yeahmy VHS died a long time ago as well. I do remember buying this on CD-ROM off some nefarious bootleg dealer wink about five years ago. that means I have it packed up in a box somewhere at home. Really Really great gig as well. Not quite First Avenue or Lovesexy 88, but still a damn good gig.

Yes I have it and it is still in working order. I think it was his 29th birthday and Paula (who was married to Bob Geldof) introduced it. Would you like me to organise a copy for you - it is one of the most magic concerts and probably turned me into a very BIG Prince fan lol

Channel 4 did broadcast "LIVE" the Dortmund lovesexy 88 concert. HOWEVER its wasn't live there was a 10 minute delay and some "scenes/ songs" were cut !! I do remember they left BOB GEORGE in though probably as it was around 11pm by then. there were complaints to channel 4 about the cuts at the time , The rest of Europe got the full show. It is the same concert that was released as Lovesexy live 1/2 by Granada TV later that year. ( the Laserdisc is also cut slighty short to fit 60 mins on each side)

The 1986 Detroit birthday concert highlights (60 mins) were also shown on channel 4 in the summer of 1986 on an early evening program.I think it was repeated the following weekend.!( it was also shown later on a TUBE special)

hope that helps . ( I do have the VHS copies up in the attic somewhere)

Yeah, birthday concert from Detroit 1986, that was a great show and shows how funky the Revolution could be. What a great mood Prince is in during as well. Only thing though that keeps it from bring my favourite is that he does not touch the guitar at all. I often wondered whether they edited some parts out. I still have it on VHS transferred to DVD at home. My original recording from when they first broadcast it on C4 was poor quality due to bad reception. I then saw they were showing it again a few years later and I stupidly taped it again but over my original recording (why didn't I just use a brand new tape??!!) and only found out at the end they cut out a whole part of the performance in the middle which I now no longer have sad

as mentioned above, that'll be the birthday gig detroit 1986

c4 have done a few things over the years, god bless em!, i was just watching the 'beatiful strange' night that they did in the 90's - 4 hours of prince including the aftershow from (i think) cafe de paris.
----

going back years and years - the bbc showed the 1985 live gig with a simultaneous broadcast on radio 1 - my friend still has the cassette of the recording from the radio!

Yeah, Detroit '86. Just got the disc out of my collection and watched a bit. Yellow suit. Singing Happy Birthday followed by "how much is that doggy..".. Fond memories as it was the tour I first saw Prince (Wembley Arena)...sigh!

Heh Spud,

I would be eternally grateful if you could sort out a copy of this concert for me. I just bought the old love sexy vids off Amazon as my old VHS copies had chewed. I loved the Detroit one but couldn't find it anywhere.

Thanks

The first prince concert screened in the UK was the Purple Rain Live concert in 1985. This was broadcast on BBC2 on a Sunday morning, so it had a delay.

The second Prince show was the 86 Detroit Birthday show, broadcast in a one hour edit on C4 in Oct 86.

The third concert to be show was the Lovesexy Live show on C4 in sept 88. the friday night "live" show was a delay edit. when it was repeated on the Sunday morning, it was unedited (ie Housequake was put back in).

Ditto. This was my epiphany, made me realise how funky he was. As a James Brown fan it was a real eye opener. cool

Surprised nobody has yet mentioned The Beautiful Experience. I really enjoyed the stuff on there, especially the version of Come which was much better than the one released on the album. It was the first time I heard Interactive, Loose, Papa, Days of Wild, Now, Acknowledge Me and others. Fantastic show and one that needs to be released properly. The NPGMC did sell it briefly but it was a really shoddy tape that had been recorded from Japanese TV!
RIP sad

Oh god, that's the BEST version of Endorphine Machine that's ever been put on a disc or tape.

The "game" was a bit shocking, but it was the very early days of cd-rom. It was a lot like strolling around npgmc... wink

i've just watched the beatiful experience (hooray for days off!) i'd forgotten how good the version of 'come' is on it.

the i booted up interactive...i started by just listening to the wav and quicktime files on the disc, then decided i'd just play the game...the sound loop in the hall with the symbol chandalier is LUSH!...was playing it for a bit, but started to get annoyed when i couldn't open the diamonds and pearls safe so turned it off!

I have just found my tape and it is in brilliant condition. The concert was on 7th June 1986 - wow did he look sexy!!! lol can't believe it was 21 years ago. Going to have it copied on to DVD and then send to people who have asked about it.
