Hey there- I went along to see Marva too. I was really impressed by the first support guy (Jaya?) - I thought he was superb, and had an amazing voice, as well as a good way with the crowd.
As for Marva - who I have to admit to not knowing that much about b4 this summer - I have to say that my opinion has changed. I wasn't sure what she was capable of, as Prince seems to have been pushing Shelby J. But WOW - what an incredible voice - and in a venue that intimate, there is no hiding place. She was an absolute joy to listen to, and such an interesting life. I had thought that Prince would have made an appearance, but he was asked to appear at some Vogue event - but to be honest, she was worth the £15 I paid at the door. Excellent night - bought the cd and cant get the two main songs out of my head from the performance - "AFRO" and "Grown and Sexy" - superb! ......in the alley over by the kerb....

Marva was asked at the signing why she doesn't sing more at the Prince concerts and she confirmed that Prince is ntentionally pushing Shelby this tour.

I loved that Tokyo song he did. I thought he was ace. Wasn't that impressed by the other women. Marva was very fun and friendly on stage though.

I wasn't there but I think one of the other women performing was someone called Vula, who's got a good voice but can't write...or at least it's all boring generic stuff to me.

she was doing okay sounding but pretty by the numbers derivative beat poetry stuff. relying too heavily on that ghastly word "spiritual" and sixth form metaphors. nice voice though.

I was there too, wowwwww, I think Prince so under utilises her. I did not know her before this Summer and did not have any idea she has such a rich musical legacy attached to her. I think her style is that of someone who has found herself, is mature and thus more understated in her approach. Given Shelby's explosive presentation it would be hard to gain the spotlight from her, but she so deserves greater recognition.
On a purely visual lever her outfit was awesome, all turquoise, goshhhhh. At the Q & A, it was so funny when that guy asked to caress her hair and got a kiss too; brave man. By the time I got to her to sign something, the woman before me was hassling her to take some contact information from her (business card, blah, blah) and she seemed royally pissed off. I was not able to have a chat her, coz that darn woman was still standing in front of her. I had spent the previous 15 minutes practicing my, "how to stop drooling" routine and was doing rather well too, quite proud of myself, ahhhh to no avail..... Indi

Totally agree. She surely is very talented. I also did not know much about her before this summer. Just realised she was on the New Power Soul album when listening to it before a show. This was the pre-afro period. She seems very confident and secure in what she does and is also very much a person with a stong self identity. Also very much into the business side of things, At least that is the impression I have got.
Anyhow, she was very friendly and nice to talk to. She really has an interesting life story that she told us during the Q&A session. Also very fascinating to hear her talk about working with Stevie Wonder (who recommeded her to Prince and was working mainly at nights), Michael Jackson (who was shy and quite childish/young at heart/playful) and Prince (who also was a bit shy similar to Michael, very business savy, looking into the future 3121, the one who took the biggest risks and who was running a very tight ship yet giving them room to improvise etc.). Interesting to know that teh band did not know what songs to play (or the exact playlist) until about one hour or less before the show. It was a great evening and definitely worth the 15 punds it cost to get in. I whish her the best of success with her new album and other projects! Great photos btw! [Edited 9/19/07 16:46pm] -----
People call me rude. I wish we all were nude. I wish there was no black and white. I wish there were no rules www.myspace.com/lovesexy_777

Both Marva and Shelby have been a great find for me during this tour. They are great during the main show, but they really come into their own at the aftershow. "Gentlemen! Let's broaden our minds. Lawrence?"
