English Gent I bet you would love the 'His Dark Material' Trilogy - Philip Pullman - it is fantastic! My hubby is a total athesist and he loved it - its not 'religious' or anything but certainly challenges the idea of religion and the control it has etc. There is a film coming out in December of the first book - The film is called the Golden Compass - Can't wait to see it!
I've heard of The Golden Compass movie and some people at work have been raving about how good the books are. I hadn't been particularly interested in reading them because they sounded like fantasy stories of the type that I'm not really into. The subtext you describe certainly sounds intriguing and makes me much more interested in checking them out.

It's a shame he hasn't opened his heart to God yet.

Fascinating.

The fact that you indicate that he'd need to open his heart to god suggests it's a very emotional thing. I'd say that Dawkins opened his mind and found more logical answers. Speaking to friends who believe, I can see the great joy that their faith brings to their lives and seeing that it's hard to knock it and suggest it is a bad thing. I've personally found it increasingly liberating to discover my own personal belief in the non-existance of god.

The moment I realised that this was my one and only chance on this planet was like a bolt from the sky and I'd imagine that it's not too disimilar from the feelings people get when they're born again. To know that there's nothing else means you have to make the most of every single day.

I must admit, I find it impossible to revert and to go back to the status of un-knowing about God's existence as like with anything else, once you know, you just know. You cannot erase a strong "spiritual" experience (which transcends but includes both the emotion and the mind btw) and I have had several of them.

But I can't see why that is a bad thing. It doesn't stop me from being a very rational person the rest of the time. And I still make the most of everyday as even for a believer there is only one physical life on Planet Earth.

At least it's good to be able to share and discuss these things openly without generating (too much) scorn. wink

I'd never try to convince you that you are wrong in your beliefs or that you should revert from them. For one thing I've tried that with my friends and seen how even the most compelling arguments are dismissed because they know they are right anyway smile.

Like you say though, it's nice to discuss these things in a civilised manner. I guesss one day we'll find out for sure. If there is a god I'll be in for a bit of explaining at the pearly gates. If there's not, you'll never know anyway because you'll just be dead. There's an argument there for saying someone should have faith just in case. But that's a whole 'nother can of worms. biggrin

Totally! I think a lot of people think they are childrens books but the ideas in there were a lot for me to get my 30somethin head around never mind a kid/teenager try to get. I reckon the film will be a lot more commercial than the book - the third one - The Amber Spyglass knocks all concepts of Angels/god/everything out the window! Loved it! But you have to read all three or you woudl be totally confused. Oh by the way - on the golden compass website there is a brilliant little thing where you answer questions about your personality and then it tells you what your daemon is - its fasinating! (Your daemon in the books are an expression of your soul in the form of an animal - brilliant stuff)
Nah nah na...Hold on to your wigs!

Oooh! thats pretty cool! I wanted to be something funky like that but I'm a snow goose! If you read the books you'll find out that doesn't seem like a good one but one of the main characters daemon is a snow goose so I'm good with that smile

Last night's aftershow (13 Sept) was another incredible experience for me. First, the show was simply amazing, from start to finish. The music deeply touched me and I was already over the moon with just that. However, I believe there was something else that made this show even more special.

During the song “Come together” it felt as if the place was being filled with God’s presence and as if we were all wrapped in His warm love. This feeling remained powerful until the end of the show, but my enjoyment reached its peak when I unexpectedly got picked out of the crowd and pulled onto the stage by Prince himself and suddenly found myself dancing onstage right next to him and amongst all of the NPG members!

Funny thing is, despite his height, I hadn't even noticed that guy until he got up there, he seemed to have come out of nowhere! Then I spent most of my time trying to avoid tripping over his feet or getting smacked by his swinging arms, to top it all I also had to avoid the cables / mike stands and the fluffy rug near the drums, it might have seemed like a lot of fun from the audience, but believe me it's hard work being onstage!

I don't mind if people call me by my real name. It's Alan by the way. Al will also suffice. Hell, when I meet people in the 'real world' I sure as hell don't adopt a username. "Hi, pleased to meet you, my name's spudgolitely1435".

Lucky you! Hope you have a good time. There are still a few hours left and I still have hope (and faith) that a ticket will turn up, so I might join you later. If not will definitely be tuning in on Sky later on to see you all having a party over there!

You're not going to believe this y'all, but I just had a call from colinb (my new hero) and he's just found a ticket for tonight's main show, my prayers have finally been answered!

I only have 40 minutes to get ready and then head for London. I don't care that I am already tired and have a cold, I don't want to miss this unique chance!

I'm so happy! See y'all there ! (block 115). biggrin
