BBC Article: Prince joined on stage by Elton

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/h...994379.stm

Pop star Prince was joined onstage by Sir Elton John at the latest of his 21 dates in London's O2 arena.
The singer appeared unannounced at the start of the encore to sing a cover of The Beatles' The Long and Winding Road, accompanied by Prince on guitar.

Afterwards, the two superstars embraced and Prince said to the crowd: "You know who it is - Sir Elton John!"

The collaboration clearly inspired the Minneapolis musician, who crammed a further seven songs into his encore.

Among them were his 1980s classics When Doves Cry and Sign O' The Times.

The BBC's John Hand, who was at the concert, said: "Sir Elton has performed onstage with many of the top stars of the past three decades, including Eminem and George Michael, but this was still a surprise - albeit one which was much appreciated by the crowd."

Second encore

Earlier in the show, Sir Elton had drawn cheers and applause when the venue's video screens pictured him in the audience.

The 60-year-old singer recently gave the UK premiere of his Red Piano show at the O2 on one of Prince's rare nights off.

Fans who waited around at Thursday night's concert were given a second treat - as Prince and his band returned to the stage for a second encore fifteen minutes after the house lights went up.

The 49-year-old then took to the stage at the O2's more intimate second venue for an aftershow performance that lasted more than two hours.

Playing into the small hours, Prince covered another Beatles track - Come Together - and Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love.

The latter was a tribute to the hard rock band who, earlier this week, announced they were to reform for a one-off show at the venue in November.

Prince's 21-date residency at the O2 draws to a close next week.

As one of the 120 million who has bid for Zep tickets, I sincerely hope Page and Plant return Prince's homage with a rendition of Housequake

Who Prince or Elton? Prince was in fine form last night and Elton seemed to thoroughly enjoy it too. Elton was singing and bopping his head throughout. He was giving him plenty of respect with applause too and jumped off his stool for a standing ovation after Purple Rain.

He jumped the gun a bit at the end though. His party left and missed that last encore.

That was so great to see!

Most of the front end of the lower/floor crowd had given Elton a bit of a cheer when he arrived with his partner and entourage about 10 mins before the lights went down.. I did wonder, "hmm a duet maybe", but wasn't actually expecting to see Elton up onstage!

I wonder how planned it was?

I can imagine him getting a little note to his VIP table "Dear Sir Elton, fancy a surprise guest spot? Love, prince" or something! cool

can someone elaborate on this?

i always see Elton with a Grand Piano? what did he play or was it just him singing w/P.

Its just that you dont see any fixed instruments anywhere other than the "Pit" so i wonder what happened!

they had to compromise and do something not written by either one of them
so their musical egos wouldn't be ruffled.

Maybe they compromised, that would make sense. They could have picked a song that Elton knew the words to though. I'm sure his performance wasn't quite what it would have been if he didn't need to keep looking at the lyric sheet. He also seemed to miss Prince's queue to start singing again which was quite amusing but he did pick it up on the second attempt. biggrin

Don't get the idea that I'm knocking Elton though. Was great to just see him there and clearly enjoying it. To get him and Prince onstage together was superb. Certainly better to have that than some random audience member singing Play That Funky Music White Boy. lol

Renato played Your Song during the instrumental break which was a nice nod to Elton. Elton acknowledged it and seemed to appreciate the gesture.
