Only 50 years of rock'n'roll concerts and we still haven't worked out a fair seating system!
I don't think there'll ever be a totally fair system for seat allocation, in a perfect world so that we didn't spend the gig looking at the back of a head, short people would be upfront grading to tall people at the back! (not that I'm short, I'm just average). That would be great when you rang for tickets, "You want tickets to the concert? And how tall are you? And you're being honest that you're only 3 foot eleven? Well then, you'll be assigned a ticket on the third row!" I only went to the 2 Manchester gigs, and personally I didn't experience any queueing problems. I joined the queue about halfway into it's eventual length both times and ended up with seats around the same area both times - row 10 and 9 from the front in the middle section. And I was happy with those, the people in the front row were only 5 or so metres in front, it's hardly worth arguing over! They were still relatively great seats and I could see the whole show easily and without too much neck-ache!If I'd queued an hour earlier I might have gained a whole metre! Wow! I tend to think you experience the atmosphere more when surrounded by people a bit back anyway. I personally think that a first-come, first-in policy is the fairest. If you are willing to queue for hours to get a seat near the front, you deserve a reward. It only breaks down when people hold spaces or seats for friends who swan in at a later time, but that's difficult to combat. It is sad that we see the same backs of heads at the front every concert, but it is made worse when they constantly get picked to go up on stage, they already have the best view in the house and then they get rewarded with an even better experience! They should definately make more effort to pick people down the isles to come up on stage, like Prince did the first night in Manchester. The idea of fans themselves organising the queue gives me the shivers, no matter how much they think they're trying to help it's a system open to corruption and favouritism. I don't think there were many of these problems at Manchester? The queue bent around the corner so I couldn't see if people were jumping the queue at the front. At 5 we were let in a few at a time, obtained a laminate and coloured wrist-band, were searched, and then queued again in the same order. Then when everybody was in the building, we were let in to the auditorium a few at a time, no running allowed, allowed to pick which seat was available from those still free. It went pretty smoothly from what I experienced, apart from not having the soundcheck on Monday. Also some people behind me went to the bar or whatever and when they came back someone had jumped in their seats, which was out of order but also it is plainly sensible to leave someone guarding your seat, not all get up and go together and expect them still to be there when you get back. So that system seemed sort of okay...

(I have moved on - REALLY (Gav) but...)
Interesting - seen this at NPGUK group on yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/g...ssage/2724 Mayte319 posted Unique (Ian) had given me two raffle tickets which were supposed to reserve us a place at the front of the queue, but that system didnt work as it had the prevous night and we had to join the end of the queue due to those who had not been part of the system but had been waiting there all day wasnt having any of it and truthfully they were right. TOO BLOODY RIGHT!!! Well done those people for not letting her in!!! BUT After being searched and gradually let into the theatre itself Unique rang me and told me to go straight to the front and across to the left, which i did via past prince's gituars and to my amazement he d saved us two seats in the front row. Suprise Suprise!!!

I've just come back to my computer and seen everything that has been written about the queuing fiasco and after reading most of them(thanks for the support ILikeFunkyMusic and Mr7)I only have two more things to say.
I've been to a few concerts and events in my life, and in every single queue outside the venue you would start queuing at the end of it, very simple. There would be nobody trying to tell you where to queue and how to do it, we all know how it's done. And if someone would of tried to push themselves to the front because they had some stupit ticket that their mate Gav gave them earlier on(supposebly), they would of been hanged from the highest tree nearest to the Apollo. "Hardcore fanatics"
2 scary words, no wonder Prince was bored as hell with seeing their sad faces every single night. Whatever the situation, you abused the raffle ticket system by offering her tickets which you just happened to have on you and if you can do it once, you can do it again. Hardcore fanatics or just plain selfishness abusing the system for your own ill gotten gains. Let's get something straight, you don't work for Prince so get a life and get over it!

[This message was edited Wed Oct 9 15:50:10 PDT 2002 by camille69] Appreciate your points camille and hopefully from the messages about where I was "discussing" the situation with Mr7, starbass, and ilikefunkymusic you can see my own feelings on the subject. I just wanted to make it clear that your comment of "And if someone would of tried to push themselves to the front because they had some stupit ticket that their mate Gav gave them earlier on(supposebly)" is based on pure speculation and is in fact wrong. As I've said many many times, I was not in charge of the ticketing system and not only had no way of allocating tickets but wouldn't have done as I was trying very hard to make the system work. In fact I was half way back in the queue myself. I agree with your point that just a queue should have worked, but in the absence of crash barriers, there were quite a few who just tried to jump the queue using force. At least the ticketing / name system allowed us to double-check this wasn't the case. As to the Unique situation, as he's made clear, he did not save tickets for Mayte319, someone merely swapped seats with her as it was her birthday. OK, maybe he made himself conspicuous doing this however he did not change the rules of the system to suit himself, someone merely SWAPPED seats. Hope this clears things up (finally) Gav

Gav, When I say something I say it because I know it otherwise I wold shut my mouth, and I don't talk out of speculation because I was there for three nights along with many other people and saw as well as me what you lot were up to.
About your point about when you say that there was no crash barriers and the ticketing system helped so people didn't jump the queue is the bigest piece of crap I've ever heard, people were jumping the queue before, during and after you lot called the names/numbers to form the queue. I just want to say that if I went along with the queuing system you done from thursday to saturday is because I really thought you actually had something to do with the NPGMC otherwise I don't think a lot of people would of taken your abuse during this three days, only for the reason that you and your mates got first row every night. And don't give me the crap that you and your mates done this so the queue goes nice and smooth for all the NPGMC members, it was done for your own interest otherwise I recommend you don't do it again. I think that now everyone knows what really happened outside the Apollo, next time will be a different story and I don't think a lot of people will take the crap out of two or three saddos. P.S.Gav before Prince does another tour in Europe I recommend that you practice your ticketing system in a Marilyn Manson concert, then you can post everyone how it went.

I was in rows K & E for Thursday and Friday respectively and was in Row A on Saturday, despite having ticket number 124, merely because I had the sense to WALK to one of the sides and not peg it down the middle aisle like the other 200 people. Again, I have no problem with anyones views of me, as long as they are based on fact and not a case of mistaken identity. [This message was edited Fri Oct 11 0:30:42 PDT 2002 by Gav]

Well guys, i'm french and i will make the road to Frankfurt for my first concert of the european tours. So i hope everything will be fine on the matter of queuing tickets.
I've heard about the story of the "french mob" at the London concerts. If i could give a piece of good advice to people who organize the queuing tickets thang it would be : please don't do nothing on the Paris show. According to the venue, there will be 875 club members on that night and it will be almost impossible to keep people calm. If there are not enough tickets printed (i've heard it stopped at 250) then a lot of people will not understand what happens. eh... we have to get tickets, ok. But there are no tickets available. Why there are people with tickets and people without? what will happen to the people without tickets, etc... etc... it will be terrible mess. So please keep it like this and let's use the traditionnal "first come first serve" basis, even if we have to wait several hours in the queue. Some of the french people who attended the London show spoke widely about their story, and according to them they were against the system because, as i've read here, the people who organize this use to keep the first 50 or so tickets for themselves and friends. Prince himself noticed something strange and said at one gig that it was always the same people in the front rows. Well, i'll check this on sunday... Peace.
