Sign of the Times. Not sure how official it is but you can get it in shops. That's the one to go for. Avoid Rave.... unless you are a completist. Or love The Time.

Personally, I'd say Live At The Aladdin is easily the best concert video of the last ten years at least.

1+1+1=3 and The Everlasting Now are breathtaking, just like his performances in "the old days". The rest of it's good too - Strange Relationship, etc. His funk guitar playing in 1+1 is possibly the best that's ever made it to video.

Not the last word in picture quality (looks like it was shot on consumer DV cameras!) but well shot and framed, and the audio is excellent.

Grafitti Bridge?! (cough).

Agree about the picture, it's shoddy. Used to look bad on my old 32" but on a 42 it's almost unwatchable.

And I must respectfully disagree about the sound, I think that it's pretty poor in that respect too.

Would recommend Purple Rain 20th Anniversary edition. If you were around in the 1980's the MTV Premiere Party will take you back to when Prince was vying with Michael Jackson as the biggest Pop Star in the world. The stick I used to get for being a Prince fan back then.

With regard to the hits, probably this tour. Anyone else agree with that or disagree as the case may be.

By far the best concert dvds are the ones "not officially released".
Don't be disappointed, I didn't say "not" released.

An official remastered version of Sign O The Times has only been released in Canada (the European and other versions being copied from VHS rather than digital masters).

You can buy it from Amazon.ca and it still works out at only around £13 inc. delivery to the UK.

Okay, sound could be cleaner, but it's a pretty good mix, and the band kick ass (Rhonda, JB, Sheila, Renato, Eric Leeds, Maceo... best lineup for years). I prefer that disc in almost every way to Rave.

Best concert videos in no particular order?... (mostly NOT on DVD sad)

Aladdin
Parade gig (yes, the yellow suit)
Lovesexy from Germany
Beautiful Experience
Purple Rain (Syracuse)
Nude Tour, Japan (is there a decent quality version of this ANYWHERE?)
Sign Of The Times (I suppose... unfortunately, because of the re-shot bits, it never feels completely live to me... and the sound is appalling on all the UK releases. But worth it for Beautiful Night alone)

What have I left out?

Me too!!! I had them both on video and only this summer I got them converted to DVD - best spent 50 euros in a long while! I loveeeee that concert. SOTT is my close second. Prince & The Revolution Live 85 in 3rd place. Sounds like I gotta get "Live at the Aladdin" ....

Bought myself 'Rave' DVD on ebay for 1pence a while back. Best 1pence I've spent in my life! Aladdin good - but looks like a home movie - quality is awful - but I'd put up with a lot. All others great - but SOTT and Lovesexy are MUST HAVES for anyone into Prince. I never really watch the films - just too cringeworthy (sorry) though Under Cherry Moon probably fave. For my 19th birthday (aeons ago now... bawl) my friends bought me Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge and Under Cherry Moon and we sat and watched them - the topped off evening with SOTT and Lovesexy videos. That was a day!! lol Have fun watching all of them!
If anybody asks you, I belong to Prince....

Pity that Lovesexy hasn't been released on DVD, as I think, it's the best concert.

It was officially released on the old Laserdisc format though many years ago.

Laserdisc is the big 'un on the left! (DVD on the right) Hee hee!

Look at the size of that muthafunkster!

Yup, I found this while flicking thru the bargain bin in a Tottenham Court Road video shop ten years ago. LaserDisc was pretty much dead by then, so I was incredibly lucky to find it.

The other one I'm really pleased with is:

which was purchased on eBay. Both of these were only otherwise available on nasty prerecorded VHS tapes (which, of course, I wore out very quickly!). They look great on laserdisc.

I've never known a single person with a laserdisc player. I remember HMV used to have them in the bargain bins a few years back, and there's The Cinema Store on St Martins Lane opposite Stringfellows which does Region 1 DVDs and still has loads of laserdiscs. The LDs are really cheap, but the hilarious prices for their DVDs caused us to rename it The Daylight Robbery Store.

Does Camden still have those little places near the market with all their bootleg DVDs? It's been a couple of years since I last checked it out.
