WHAT A SHOW! 24/8

Just back indoors, I only live 3 stops away on the tube...Result! Well what a show again tonight...My third one of the tour and they just get better and better...Tonight saw him spend a little more time on the songs at the piano which went down well, no booing...I was well close tonight and I must say considering he just had the week off, he looked a bit tired...Bless him! Wonder if he'll have an early night? Who saw David Ike? I went up and shook his hand, I had to... Thanked him for his wisdom...Another great man...So bring on the 1st Sept I say! When I'll be doing it all over....Might see you there! x

Fantastic, glad you had a great time again. We've had no updates tonight at all. Any new songs on the setlist?

Aaah, thanks for this, you are the first to report back! Who was the support? How long was the show?

Just got back too. The benfits of living close!

Awesome show. Probably the best so far of the ones I've seen. A WHOLE lot better than last Saturday, that's for sure.

Loved the piano segment. When he went into Purple Rain from the piano, I went crazy. Then wehen he brought it up to the full arrangement, I was in purple heaven.

Even the 'samples' bit worked better tonight as he gave more of an airing to each song.

Nice to get three encores (total time about 1h 35-40 by my watch). In terms of quality, right up there. Quantity, I wasn't left feeling short-changed.

Quick bite to eat then I'm back for the Aftershow. Hope he plays it...

Not much more to tell really...You should have been there! Common supported him which was a good show if you like rap, I do...He also got up on stage during Princes gig, with the girls and guy from the audience...P asked the guy if he could sing and he couldn't, then he gave one of the girls a chance to sing and she was struck silent, silly girl, wish he'd asked me...And then Common jumped up on stage and P quite happily let him do the singing whilst he stood back and played the guitar..It was awesome! Cant wait to see what else is instore....x

Words just fail me - I cannot bring enuff compliments for tonite... Prince seemed so relaxed. I got the impression he tried to play as many of his hits as he could.. but he could play from here to eternity and it probably would never be enuff for me.

I went to the first nite which was awesome.. tonite, was off the chart. His power for me I think is when it was just him and his piano just singing raw. I finally got to hear Sometimes it snows in April which was incredible. He opened with 1999.. hell was not expecting it! I felt he went into a zone when he played at the piano.. it was a perfect nite and we were definitely honoured.

When he said 'I love you too' you got the impression that he truly meant it. He is doing what he wanted to do on his terms, his music direct to the fans.. and boy do we love him.

Thank you Prince and the Band!

Enjoy all and be safe out there! xx

Great crowd tonite too.. def no booing... the best fans in the world!!

My first Prince concert! It was really good!
I was sat between 2 prince.org members which was cool too!
My fave bit was when Prince said "I love you too" to the crowd in the middle of rasberry beret. He has such a cheeky smile!

Two verses of SOTT tonight, he's getting there slowly. Got a nice Little Red Corvette on the piano too. He also did The Rules which I heard at the aftershow last Saturday. It was performed quite differently tonight but still seemed to go down well.

The show started with 1999 and from where I was in the lower tier, I could see a young girl at the front of one of the rows behind the symbol. She was standing on her seat, bouncing up and down and clearly having the time of her life. She couldn't have been more than 8 or 9. biggrin

After 1999 he went into Guitar but didn't sing. He played the intro and then just carried on playing his guitar when he wold normally sing. He played through the first verse and then the next bit before doing some more soloing. There were a lot of cool guitar moments tonight.

As mentioned above the piano segment was better with longer versions of songs. He started with Little Red Corvette, doing the usual play of a few bars, then stopping. I thought, 'here we go again' but was surprised that he continued without further teasing. The loudest cheer I've heard at the O2 may have had something to do with it. Haven't heard such a loud roar at any of the 5 shows I've seen so far. After the piano section he went into sampler playing and this again was better than previously. Sign Of The Times, DMSR and a few others. The only one he really teased us with was When Doves Cry, which is just begging for more.

The instrumental break was great tonight. No Wonderful World but a nice segment, Prince was speaking throughout it too. Very laid back and bluesy.

Purple rain was very different. I've seen it a few times on this tour now and it's been different each time. Tonight it started very mellow with Prince on the piano. He then sung the first bit and the crowd were expecting the guitar to appear but he then went in to some woo hoo, hoo hoo's, which were emotionally performed. Eventually he got his guitar on and played a smashing solo.

When Common came up it was quite funny. Prince called for him to join him on stage but the security man wouldn't let him up. It was when people from the crowd were up and the guy obviously thought someone was pushing their luck. Common actually started to walk away before another security man put the guy right. After that Common was given the mic and clearly didn't know the words to Play That Funky Music, which everyone seemed to find amusing. He gave a few uh, uh's into the mic. Then Prince said something to him and Common stated doing some free style rapping with Prince on the guitar, which worked better than I would have expected.

The only downer was the early finish. When he starts late I can understand getting a shorter gig as it has to be finished by 11. Starting at 9 and finishing at 10:35 isn't what's expected really.

That's the one I knew I should remember but didn't.

Prince did also tease a little with his guitar. He played the start of Honkytonk Woman and sung the first line before stopping. Obviously a nod to the Stones who'd been there the last two nights.

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore was in the piano segment. Teased on the piano with Diamonds and Pearls and played a few seconds of Erotic City on the sampler.

Sorry for the randomness, things keep popping into my head. biggrin

Had the usuals of Cream, U Got The Look, Controversy, Musicology. Other than the instrumental of Guitar, there was nothing from Planet Earth.

I Wanna Be Your Lover on the piano.

I just went over to http://www.3121.com and found this review. I hope it's okay if I post a copy of it here as well.

Copy Taken from website 3121.com:

"3121 Spy Report: Friday, Aug 24
T’was anotha beautiful night at the O2! 2night was all about the guitar AND the keys.. each instrument has been getting more play lately, much 2 everyone’s delight. “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?” Prince called out early on, jumping in2 a few lines of The Stones’ “Honky Tonky Women.” The crowd ate it up and was served seconds with teasers from other Stones’ classics. “Guitar” morphed midway thru in2 a funky guitar jam.

Play That Funky Music: guest at the mic spontaneously spittin’ rhymes atop funky guitar chops.. it don’t get any hotter than that!

At the keys: Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, even Sometimes it Snows in April. This is such a beautiful song on piano… no matter what the instrument, the emotion spills out in2 the room and through the crowd. Everyone cheered for Sometimes it Snows, clearly moved by the per4mance. We got a taste of ballads, beats, breakdowns on the keys and it was ALL good. Prince even started Purple Rain out on the keys 2night. The keyboard set is fast becoming a crowd favorite.. it’s never the same thing twice and keeps delving deeper in2 songs we all love. Keep ‘em coming!

Peace ’til next time.

Middle of the lower tiers at the sides are absolutely fantastic views. I'd take these seats over ones on the floor anytime now. First 3 shows were on the floor and while it's great to be up close, the sound isn't so great down there and you lose Prince when he's round the back of the symbol.

Had two shows in the middle of the lower tier now and it's so much better. You're still really close and can see everything. For example, I knew he had a bass player but didn't see any sight of him from my D2 seats. You also can't see the stage lights from the floor and the stage looks great.

I've had one mid lower tier and one level4...I had 106 AA tonight but I'm so short I couldn't see much and I missed the lights too which I must say have looked best from level4 so far...I moved up to the disabled viewing platform tonight, its a bit further away but it was a great view...I have 106 N tickets for the 12th when I am taking my 21 year old son...I think this is around the best place to sit for me...

Just back from the aftershow...he came on so 'early' I missed the start, it must have been before 1am!!

Two great shows again tonight - to compare with other shows is futile, and probably splitting hairs...enjoy it while it lasts, the guy is a unique talent.

The guitar solo on Peach at Indigo2, followed by the bass solo...what more can you say these are the moments of magic you wait for, and that you hope you'll see.

3121...whatever that means! And who cares because just being there is enough...

The main show was short but the best of the 5 I've seen so far. The Stones bits were funny, adding "Miss You" into PTFMW was great, and "Sometimes It Snows In April" was beautiful.

Now, the AFTERSHOW....

Common had a few songs throughout the set, but P still found time to play (in no particular order):

3121 (to open, with Common rapping as well as P singing, and to close - inc. One Nation),
Girls & Boys,
Partyman,
Peach,
Controversy,
A Love Bizarre,
What Have You Done For Me Lately,
Tell Me Something Good,
Baby Love,
Black Sweat
and I'm probably missing others. Lasted about 100 mins, started around 12:50.

My highlights:

Peach was entirely instrumental (and rocky - unlike the It Ain't Over version) and Prince was majestic on guitar - his rhythm playing was as good as I've seen. That alone made the night worth it.

Controversy was extended and was a complete blast.

Black Sweat - he took Dunham's bass midway through the song, sat down (presumably because the strap would be too long) and did something special with it.

And I've never seen him do A Love Bizarre in its entirety before.

P also played keys at various times throughout the set, and you could see he was having a ball, going round instructing people what to do. Quite funny seeing him tell Marva how to hit the cowbell.

Common's band were also onstage with the NPG at various points - so at times there were 2 drummers, 4 keyboard players, bass, guitar (Prince), Shelby, Marva, the horn section (no Greg), The Twinz, a DJ and Common all on stage!

THIS is what aftershows are all about!
