I never really dug Maceo from watching him with Prince on TV but I thought he was fantastic when I saw him with Prince last week.

Your taking the piss are'nt you, Maceo is one of the best jazz saxophone players on the circuit today, i noticed he has been played quite reserved at the prince gigs, but his own live performances when on tour, will just blow your mind. Im gutted he's leaving on the 5th, Good luck maceo, see ya soon wink

Presidente

I've seen him couple of Times even together wie his old mates Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. Amazing! This croud really knows to funk the house.
A few years ago, must be around 2002 Maceo played together on an open-Air Gig in Düsseldorf (Jazz Rally) because of a Birthday from Adolphe Sax or something.
He was on stage with Greg Boyer (tb), and Candy Dulfer (sax) and W.Boulware (org) and truly it was amazing.
I wish he could stay longer in London.

No I'm not! smile Maceo is great, but I think his reputation overshadows better players. I think Mike Phillips has an overall better range, but its almost like you can't say that because he hasn't done the time.

However, I'm glad to see the back of one horn player because regardless of how good they are, Prince is over using them. Now that the horns are playing the parts usually associated with keyboards or rhythm guitar, I think it makes a great deal of tracks sound too caberet.

I think he should send the whole horn section of holiday for a bit.

i think its impossible to compare saxophone players to who has the greatest range,Maceo is more your hard core funk player, and mike philly, i can see him on the smooth jazz circuit, but each of them have individual unique sound, i agree Prince the horns do sound cabaret, and i wanted maceo to burst out of his confined space, but i truly beleive if he did he would of overshadowed most of the players, cool

Define real to me then??

Music:

1. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.
2. the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.
3. musical work or compositions for singing or playing.
4. the written or printed score of a musical composition.
5. such scores collectively.
6. any sweet, pleasing, or harmonious sounds or sound: the music of the waves.
7. appreciation of or responsiveness to musical sounds or harmonies: Music was in his very soul.

REAL

1. true; not merely ostensible, nominal, or apparent: the real reason for an act.
2. existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious: a story taken from real life.
3. being an actual thing; having objective existence; not imaginary: The events you will see in the film are real and not just made up.
4. being actually such; not merely so-called: a real victory.
5. genuine; not counterfeit, artificial, or imitation; authentic: a real antique; a real diamond; real silk.

No obviously not, i just answered your question

My "question" was in response to your statement.

Based on your statement, people aren't "real" music lovers if they...

a) Don't like Maceo

or/and

b) Don't agree with your definition of "Real" music?

If you think its funk horns playing the main chords to songs like Lets Go Crazy then you need to learn what funk is!

I saw the Musicolgy concert in 2004 and I have heard numerous recordings with this band. I know damm well what the horns are during in Let's Go Crazy they are being used to play the keyboard parts.

I also am aware of what funk is and P uses the horns in many of his funk songs.
You don't appreciate Maceo Parker so I know you don't know the first thing about funk and that is really fine. I just don't understand going to see an artist who has roots in funk music and you can't stand the sound of horns.

I love Maceo! But I agree that Eric is Prince's best horn player his contributions to the back catalogue is immesurable worship

He's the hardest to imitate as well he's almost Coltrane but playing funk! cool

I totally appreciate Maceo's work. I simply think Prince lets it overshadow his own style, and tries so hard to accomodate the horns he ends up making his own sound sometimes cabaret. Its a case of less is more.

I'm happy to see the back of Maceo, much like I was happy to see the end of Larry. I'm not knocking those artists natural talent, but I think that their "aura" holds Prince back from being his own man.

I never said Maceo isn't funky. I said it isn't funk horn to play the keyboard sections of Lets Go Crazy.

I take it, as you seem to be argueing the point, you think that horns playing the keyboard lines of a rock song like Lets Go Crazy is funk horn then!?!?
