What Would Be Your Perfect Setlist

It would be good to get the real Prince Fans views of what would be their ideal set list. I have been converted into a Prince Fan by my wife. (Went to the O2 on Friday 3rd August - Great Concert). I knew Prince was a great guitar player and a showman but i didn't know many of his songs...what an eye opener! It's great to hear from so many fans about the shows, so if you'd like to input YOUR faveourite setlist, or let me know the best songs to listen too, please be my guest and put down your thoughts!!

For those people yet to go to the concert...you are in for a treat! wink

I was listening to Gold last night and thought it would be a great opener. I think it would kick things off nicely.

I've been happy with the setlists. Hope I get to another gig before the end.

A perfect setlist? Hmmmm....

That'd have to be every album played complete and in order of release. lol

Off the top of my head and in no special order I'd have to go for a set containing the following:

When U Were Mine
Dolphin
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Strange Relationship
Gold
Endorphinemachine
Loose
The Love We Make
Sign Of The Times
3121
The One U Wanna C
The Beautiful Ones
I Hate U
Bambi
Call My Name
Now
Love Thy Will Be Done
Partyman
Gett Off
Days Of Wild
Empty Room

Yep, I'd leave happy after that little lot. biggrin

Didn't miss it when I saw him on the gold tour, didn't miss it on the ONA tour and didn't miss it during the New Power Soul gigs either.

This is the first time I've heard Prince play Purple Rain live since 1993. I can take it or leave it to be honest and it was left off my list for that reason.

Since we're in fantasy land... I'd have this selection of 20 (ignoring stuff I reckon he should play like Purple Rain, Kiss & 1999 since I've heard them enough personally, and bootleg stuff - I reckon All My Dreams would make the best gig opener of any track he's ever recorded).

Love Thy Will Be Done (my fave Prince song, like, ever! And it sounds amazing live)
Crucial
Space
I Wish U Heaven
Right Back Here In My Arms
The Sun, The Moon & Stars
Last December
Starfish & Coffee
Cindy C
Alexa De Paris
Extraordinary
Trust
Walk Don't Walk
I Rock Therefor I Am
Avalanche
Welcome 2 The Dawn
A Million Days
Paisley Park
Rock & Roll Is Alive (and it lives in Funky London?)
Gold

I will be shocked to hear any of these at the Dome though. Gold (and maybe Love Thy Will Be Done) has an outside chance. Both the only ones on the list I've ever heard live I think.

What's wrong with Dolphin? LOL. He did an instrumental version of it at the ONA afrershow at the new Marquee and it rocked!

Or in Prince terms is Dolphin the equivalent of Jimmy Jimmy? Heh...

fair play! but i think its easy to dismiss a song because it is so famous! its so well know because its such a fantastic song, one of the main songs he will be remebered for in years to come!

All this time, and no one has noticed my profile pic until now!! lol smile

"Love Song"...what a crushing disappointment that was! Two of my fave artists get together and thats all they come up with. Its like Pink Floyd joining Bruce Springsteen and coming up with "Who Let The Dogs Out" !! biggrin

Oooo...did I touch a nerve with Dolphin? biggrin I agree with you regarding the Gold Experience...one of my faves, and possibly the most underrated Prince album!! Dolphhin has never really done it for me though.

As for Madge and Prince, two very important artists for two very different reasons. Is one better than the other? Depends what angle you're coming from I guess. Its like saying whats the better car, an Aston Martin or a Hummer? Two totally different cars for doing two totally different jobs; both great vehicles though.

As much as I love Madonna, I do prefer Prince. I was never struck with Madonnas live performances. They are definitely great spectacles but I was always disapointed with her live vocal performances. After the second time I said I wouldn't bother with seeing her live again.

I do love her studio work though and have all her albums. Like A Prayer is my favourite, although strangely, I never liked Love Song at the time. That was back in the days before I had been woken to the joys of Prince!

Again, comparing Prince Live and Madonna Live, we're talking about two very different beasts here. Madge concerts are always set in stone, same setlist each night and rehearsed to within an inch of its life; as such, you know that you're going to get a rock solid show...but it'll be just that, a show, or "spectacle" as you rightly said, perhaps closer to a musical than a concert. For sheer musical talent and diversity of song Magde could never touch Prince live, but then she has never pretended to or claimed to be that sort of artist. She's always said that she puts on a "show", dance numbers, costumes etc etc. As for her live vocal the lady is renowned for being less than perfect on the mic, and again she's even said this herself, but I'd rather go listen to her singing a few bum notes her and there than have her mime the whole thing!!

Good call on Like A Prayer by the way! biggrin

Wow!! looks like i've got a lot of catching up to do on these Prince songs (his concert has got me hooked). Good to see the variation in set lists and the tastes of various Prince Fans favourites.

I'm going again (with the Wife for her birthday on the 12th September). I hope he plays 7 as it's her favourite, but on the whole i don't care what he plays as long as he doesn't keep doing a vanishing act under the stage and put more time into giving us the hits!

For me though i'd have to say Purple Rain has to be in the list period...and Anotherloverholenyerhead!!

Keep those all time set lists flowing, it's good to hear everyone's opinions. biggrin

A 3 hour Madonna tribute.

Joking!

It would have to start with Sign O' the Times exactly as it is in the movie but with the Twinz doing Cats part.
Followed by 'Just As Long As We're Together' from his first album For You which is great but never played live.
My Name is Prince
3 Chains O' Gold
Then he has to do some crazy funk from 'The Gold Experience' era with some looong slap bass solos!!
Then when our bodies need a good rest from all that 45 minutes of funk he does amazing version of 'I Hate U' & 'Empty Room'.
Then I'd like him 2 play 'Graffiti Bridge' which I have always loved but he's never done live.
Then a long beautiful piano medley including Baby from his first album and at the end a rousing version of 'Still Would Stand Al Time'
And lastly I'd love him to do a long version of 'I'm Yours', again from his first album. And rock the house!
Continuing with 'I Like It There' from 'Chaos and Disorder'.

For the encore he would have to play Thunder followed by a long version of Gold.
The climax of the show would have to be Orgasm with the Twinz on 'vocals'!!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

4. Holy River (something a bit more softer and reflective)
5. Alphabet Street
6. I could never take the place of your man
7. Controversy
8. Sign O times
9. Pop Life
10.I feel for you
11.I wanna be your lover
12.Red Corvette
14.When Doves Cry
15.Nothing Compares 2 U

Encore 1

No Purple Rain on Lovesexy and that was some tour.

I'd settle for a two hour version of DMSR with the band throwing on old funk riffs and horns from James, Sly, Rick, George etc. Go to the aftershow, see The Time, Prince comes on and rips up Jungle Love on his guitar, then his band come on and play a load of old school (Mutiny, Love On A Blue Train, 100 MPH, G Spot, For Love then some new - Dear Mr Man, The Word). At the end, Prince offers me his limo home, I get in & there's the Twinz.....
