London 03/10/02: HIGHLIGHTS First of all, this was the best concert I've ever been to. Just to make that clear.
Highlights:
- As we were gettting into the venue, there he was, Prince, sitting in row 15 or so, talking to some fan. Something like 3 metres away from me. So I go there, say "Excuse me sir, I think you're on my seat" - he laughs and stands up. That was already worth the $300.
- The souncheck: Awesome. Prince playing his bass on Days of Wild right in front of me. And the way he was playing it just showed you how tight he and the current NPG are - it was like "yeah, let's do DOW, why not" and whoooa! (I guess you know what I mean)
- The concert: Very different set than on the US Leg - no Other Side Of The Pillow, no Xenophobia, no Case Of U, no Didn't Cha Know, no La La La Means ILU, no I Love U But ICTUA, no Anna Stesia... but he played:
The Work (amazing!)
Bambi (!)
Strollin' (took me a while to recognize the song - he did a lot of jazzy things yesterday)
Gotta Broken Heart Again (completely different, kinda jazzy version)
The Ride (it's back! London loved it)
Whole Lotta Love
and then, the piano medley. Breathtaking. I've never, ever seen something like that before. The songs I can remember:
One Nite Alone
Adore ("you smashed up my ride, baby! But don't worry, Alicia Keys'll pay for that")
I Wanna Be Your Lover
U're Gonna C Me (very cool, actually)
TMBGITW (one line only)
Do Me Baby
Condition Of The Heart
The Beautiful Ones (FULL VERSION WITH BAND!!! HIGHLIGHT OF THE SHOW - for me)
Nothing Compares 2 U
HCUDCMA?
In the end, he did The Ladder and Empty Room, both amazing.
But wait - he came out again for a second encore, doing All The Critics Love U In London.
And those are only the songs he didn't play in the US - of those that he did, the highlights for me were:
Muse 2 The Pharoah
1+1+1=3/Love Rollercoaster
Strange Relationship
Everlasting Now
- Prince in a good mood: He was visibly having fun all through the show, making all kinds of jokes and simply enjoying playing again.
- The afterparty: Got moved to a different location, big mess, no show, Prince showed up surrounded by 4 fat bodyguards, lots of the upcoming Live 3CD set played, "It Ain't Over, Girls & Boys, Joy In Repetition), sounds great.
All in all, an amazing night, and the best thing is, there are still two more to come.
