Does anyone actually LIKE Prince's extended brass/jazz interludes?

=

Oh for the days of Lovesexy ( I saw x2) Nude Tour (saw x2), Diamonds and Pearls, Act 2 Wembley stadium, ...AND BrixtonAcademy=3 feet from stage!

I loved the theatrical 'conceptions' of the older tours, but alas, he can't do the splits anymore (oh how I mourn your healthy hip...heehee)

I think he's just bored of playing '*songs* and tries to create a 'never ending groove' on occasion. But it ain't a rave Prince...and most SO WANT to hear WHOLE SONGS. Perhaps we are just selfish.

I know I am! biggrin

p.s but I am thankful for any sort of Prince tour really!

The man is nearly 50, so I think he deserves a few more breaks in the show, but I agree, the Maceo show is running very thin now.

I think Prince should perform 12" versions, letting the band play on while he changes/rests.

Example. Do mountains, and when the first 4 minutes are sung, P can vanish while the band finish the last 6 minutes!

Prince gets a rest, band get a jam, fans get Prince music, not covers, everyone is happy!

He used to do this, buy letting the band play things like Alexa De Paris.

I know what you mean, I think I have seen Pass The Peas about a million times. But I love Maceo and especially Mike Philly - he is amazing. His solo last night was SOOOOO good!

I love jazz music, and I'm glad to hear some great brass. What real music fan doesn't love brass? It's sad that many Prince fans only want to hear the hits. I hope he plays all jazz and obscure music and sends ya'll home crying. That would be hilarious. Just to read people complaining that Prince didn't play at the afterparty makes my day. "Oh, I was ripped off, he didn't play!" ROTFL.

Prince does and the only one his music makes sense to is himself. (c) Billy

It's like the live Sly Stone covers or James Brown pastiches he has to work into every album. They're a personal enjoyment to him rather than the wider fanbase.

I actually prefer Prince's smaller bands... the stripped down sound of the 95 era NPG was fantastic. Live brass stuff is cool in moderation but mostly Prince's current band sounds very "easy listening" to me... muzak version of Prince hits. The extended jazzy interludes... I could do without that. I'd like to just hear Prince songs, start to finish.

I love Maceo and Mike Philly.

But then again I love jazz/funk horn jams.

I just take it all as a trip and go along with it.

But Prince has played 'Purple Rain' every night. I think the London shows have struck a good balance.

Some people just don't get it when P says 'real music for real music lovers'. Get with it guys - it's not about the hits. P is a kick-ass muscisian, so the more jamming the better for me!!

Jamming is fine in moderation... it can get a little self indulgent at times though. Music lovers can like different types of music too of course... and any decent performer must factor in their audience's expectations when putting together a show. It's about entertaining people, after all. That's the point of the exercise.

I like some jazz... I'm no expert but I like a lot of the greats. I find Prince's brassy interludes dull dull dull. Now if we were talking about some improvised acoustic guitar or something, that I could get behind.

Agree it's not always about the hits, but I just wish his jams today were a bit funkier and a little less jazzy - a little more like Beautiful Night live on the SOTT film, or some of the amazing medleys on the Parade Tour... just a bit more of a groove. The brassy interludes sound like he's preparing an album of theme tunes for late night chat shows.
