I have to agree.

Lolita and black sweat went down like lead balloons. There he was, taunting the audience about so many hit so little time, then he gives them tracks most of them have never heard of.

I think he should drop Lolita, Crazy, Satisfied and Shhh.

still quite a few songs that could be done which were not played last night (not counting obscure surprises). For example: -
strange relationship ; te amo corazon ; 3121 ; when doves cry ; alphabet street
joy in repetition ; sign o' the times ; when u were mine ; 1999 ; fury
anotherlover ; when doves cry ; baby I'm a star ; she's always in my hair...

However, I think while he has the band he has (eg Maceo-centric) we're going to have a similar vibe each night. without too many surprises.

Complete agree. And if he's going to play Shhh which I do like, it really needs a long extended solo.

Also Playing PR at the beginning did not work for me either. That's another one for a long solo only appropriate at the end. You know like in the syracuse concerts, those solos were astounding and went on some time but why even touch purple rain unless you're just going to just let go like that on guitar.

Well, if they don't know "Black Sweat", they can f#cking well learn it and learn to love it, because it's the best thing he's done in 15 years. I still can't believe it wasn't a massive Top 10 hit.

In general, I agree that the setlist should vary. I want "When You Were Mine" at least once. Fingers crossed...

It will be interesting to see how much it varies from show to show.

It'd be impossible to please everyone, or for anyone to see their own perfect set list - but I'd have been happy enough with last nights.

It had :

Lots of hits
Plenty of horns / jazz
The accoustic set at the end

They were saying this morning that there was no '1999' or 'When Doves Cry' - but for me, with Purple Rain, Take Me With U, Let's Go Crazy and Little Red Corvette - that's four of those big six from that era.

I'd love to see some of : When You Were Mine, Dirty Mind, I Wanna be Your Lover, Anotherloverholenyohead, Mountains, SOTT, Alphabet Street, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, The Holy River, 1+1+1=3, The Work

I don't understand you people. You criticise Prince for playing new stuff. There were eight songs last night from the last three albums. About 30 percent of the show. You then say he should drop half of those to play older songs which you'll then criticise him for playing old hits.

I didn't mean to sound critical - I was pretty impressed with the set list as a good mix of stuff.

The other tracks I mentioned were just some I'd personally like to hear - but not necessarily at the expense of newer stuff.

Depends of your view point. I don't consider struff from Musicology and 3121 as new. I'd rather hear Chelsea Rodgers and Lion Of Judah.

i've said it b4 and i'll say it again ..the less of the old more of the new since 1996 or a similar set list like ONA devoid of hits but hardcore material and drop purple rain from every set list from now on
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Presumably you'll get your wish soon enough, if this residency really is the "Last Time He Will Ever Play His Greatest Hits" (billboard ad by the motorway, press conference announcement, etc etc)

Considering this is the 'last time' he's going to play 'all his hits', I think your wish might just be granted.biggrin

I was kinda blown away when I saw him in Rotterdam and he played Sign o the Times, that was totally out of the blue. He did play a jazzy version on Musicology, which I saw a clip of on youtube, no longer there alas...

.....Housequake would be a nice tho.

honestly i can't take what he says 4 truth anymore about not doing certain songs. he said that he would never play 1999 after the rave special, he hasn't done the whole song since then, but he's played the opening chords on several occasions. after the musicology tour he said that he would never play certain songs again, yet he's still doing u got the look, purple rain rolleyes, let's go crazy rolleyes and now incorporating take me with u yet again rolleyes and other so called retired songs.

You must have been at a different show to me then - the crowd loved Crazy and Black Sweat!

You have to remember that most of the people there, including me, didn't see Prince in Vegas and therefore think the setlist was great last night. He's playing for the majority, not the minority.

If he is playing for the majority, why did he leave out When Doves Cry and 1999 but stick an album track in from a flop like 3121?

I didn't say Crazy wasn't well recieved. In fact, the audience loved it! Why? because its a hit people can sing to! Thats why they want hits. The like of Lolita only do it for a minorty like us.

Would you go to a Bowie concert as a casual fan and be pleased he did a cover of say a Franz Ferdinand track at the expense of Live on Mars?

I would say last night's show and setlist was mainly for the media and press, 1st nights of a tour mostly are. Don't worry, i think he'll change things up over the next 20 shows to satisfy virtually everyone.

I know someone will always find something to bitch or moan about but I guess that comes with the territory on here wink

My main concern was that one of the Twinz was gonna knock him flying when they were whizzing past him on their rollerblades lol
