Yeah, I saw that, and momentarily thought he meant Prince, but if he meant that why didn't he just say Prince? I don't think that's what he meant.

I didn't think of that. Oh well. Foo Fighters are cool either way.....They did cover "Darling Nikki", maybe they are Prince fans.....

well, you may be right, but no one in the audience would have realised he meant Prince if he did. Anyway, I don't know much about them apart from the fact that they do like Prince so they're cool in my book smile.

Almost right. I saw the superbowl live here - it was on ITV at some ungodly hour.

We just dont GET American football. Big guys like that needing pads and 3 teams each just to play a few minutes rugby. smile

Thanks for letting me know, yeah wasnt getting my hopes up bout that one. It certainly wouldnt normally be a paper Id be buying anyhow! Yeah I dont "get" American Football either! Give me hurling anyday. I guess I lied a bit, i did see a snipbit of Prince from the superbowl, but it was only a bit of "Baby Im a star" - when i went to look for the performance on ubtube it had been pulled. I didnt know he did a Foo Fighters Cover. I thought there was more than "that" link between them for people to assume thats who Dave Grohl was dedicating his song tonight to...

The full story between Foos and P is as follows:

Dave Grohl has always been a huge prince fan, and covered Purple Rain live with the Foo's before. They decided to record Darling Nikki as a b-side but it became quite popular (it charted on the rock radio for Billboard I believe), it was going to become a single but Prince nixed it, around this time Prince also commented on people doing covers and saying people should record their own music etc.

Anyway, come Superbowl and prince sends shock jock Howard Stern a performance of him and his band doing a medley of songs including...Best of You by the Foo Fighters asking stern to wonder out loud if prince will perform this at the superbowl.

So...come superbowl Prince performs it etc. Dave Grohl later comments on 'what an honour it is to be covered by one of your heroes'. And the drummer (Taylor Hawkins?) later commented that he was with friends and was taking a cig break during the performance (which is odd as he mentions how he's a prince fan!!) and someone called him in cos Prince was performing his song. He said he wasn't sure if it was a f*ck you from prince considering they weren't allowed to perform his song or if it was a compliment, but he said either way he considered it an honour that one of their heroes covered their song and did it better than they did.

I'd definatley say the dedication was to prince, I wonder if prince will react when he finds out (I mean in a good way).

Errr, I assumed he was referring to Kurt Cobain. Not many people in the UK would have seen that Superbowl performance unless they'd stayed up till 2am to watch it originally or seen the one repeat on Sky.
That was my immediate thought when you listen to the lyrics to the song. Just didn't cross my mind it was for Prince.

the "you know who" was al gore.

obviously not because he put on the show and is trying to save the planet, but because his wife started the parental advisory stickers after listening to prince songs like darling nikki, which the foo's covered (as well as drive me wild)

Well I am aware it was on at about 2am in the morning, but I think what I was trying to say was that it wouldnt be as big a deal over here than it obviously would be in the US (Im referring to the superbowl - not Prince)

I think a lot of you are missing the point!

Read the lyrics to "the best of you" and then think that the song came from a double album called "in your honour" said to be dedicated to their fans and also John Kerry. So imo given the lyrics to the track it was most definately George Bush he was aiming it at - but it wouldnt really be a dedication!!

It could have been for Al Gore/John Kerry but then he would have just shouted them out!

I could have sworn that when it aired on NBC last night Dave actually said it was dedicated to Al Gore, by name. I wasn't planning on watching it but I saw this thread so I tuned in.

shrug

If anyone feels ambitious you can probably find a clip of the Live Earth performance on the Foofighters website. I remember after the Superbowl they had clips of Prince playing "Best of You" on there and no one got in trouble, either. wink

the best of you is about GW bush btw...

I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn't have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can't choose
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess
