First Ave Show Review

First Ave was AMAZING. I really didn't think the show could possibly be worth all the phsycial and mental pain leading up to it. I waited for first ave tix for 6 hrs in the blistering almost 100 degree heat and literally felt like I was gonna throw up or faint or both by the time I got my tix. I figured I would just have to miss the Macy's gig but I ran over there anyway once I got the First Ave tix and walked in JUST AS PRINCE GOT ON STAGE! I couldn't believe it. Then had to go outside and wait AGAIN in the heat for the main show and then AGAIN for the First Ave show.

Then we get in finally and realize they are JUST setting up. The drums, keys, everything isn't even up yet!!! My friend and I were like WTF?! And it's just getting more and more packed and we feel like a hot can of sardines. We both ended up having seperate pseudo-meltodowns and almost just threw in the towel. But I'm sooo glad we didn't because the show was absolutely INCREDIBLE.

3121 kicked in and just KILLED. It was so tight. But it had an extended intro cuz they still werent done setting up Sheila's drumkit and had some other stuff to do. And then Prince comes on stage looking like a TOTAL BADASS. The black military style suit, the oversize sunglasses, the long head scarf. And he gave the crowd a serious cheek-sucking pout and a pose and in an instant all was forgiven.

He was in such a fun and cocky mood. (Did anyone else catch him yelling "Come on, GRAMMA!" to Sheila at Macy's? So funny.) But his moves and facial expressions and just his whole stage persona were so magnetic and humorous at the same time, it was a real treat.

"Controversy", "Girls and Boys" and "I Feel For You" were great and even the Sly segment was the shit. It was such a trip to see Wendy up on stage sharing a mic with Sheila for the backups on "Thank You" and Prince and Larry just getting sick on a guitar and bass dual during "Hair." And the crowd chant during "Controversy"..."I wish we all were nude..." So fun to hear everyone chanting it. Old school for sure.

I totally thought they were gonna kick into "1999" because when Cora was checking out her drums before they started she triggered the infamous Linn drum-fill from that song...it's unmistakable. But we didn't get to hear it. And no PR stuff which was odd.

Shelby really turned it out especially during Amy Winehouse's "Love Is A Losing Game". It's truly a fantastic fleshed-out version. She really killed it.

Eventually, some guy in a suit comes on from the side of the stage and tries to grab Sheila to get her attention. She shoots him a look like, "Take ur fuckin hands off..." and then Prince comes over and "handles it" and before you know it him and the band are gone. The guickest I'd ever seen them run off a stage. Prince came out and said he was sorry but the law was shuttin and down but he'd be back real soon.

This is an aside but is anyone noticing the extra love and affection Prince seems to be offering Sheila? 2 songs during Macys AND Target Center and CLOSING Prince's show at the Target Center? Even the little looks they exchange. I don't know....judging from body language, I there's something going on. I heard she's preggers...is it possible she's his "Future Baby Mama"? They hint at it in her 3121 interview and she blows it off as a silly question but I don't know man...somethin's crackin.

I couldn't agree more with this review. This was one of the most off the hook performances I have ever seen him do.

After sitting up high in section 234 and getting a headache from the dehydration of waiting for the first ave tickets and the unbearable sound quality, I couldn't have been more excited to see the "real" show. This was without a doubt one of the most amazing things that I've ever been a part of. Everyone who was at this show (and those who weren't) should watch the opening of purple rain. Thats the only way that I could accurately describe the vibe at the show. (Plus the view from the camera during the wide shots were the the exact view that I had.)
