That's mean and untrue. I felt a lot of love going out to LG both when he passed us in the Macy's line and onstage in First Avenue.

haha, that's not what i heard. what i heard was that the people on Larry's side when he came out were kinda like "oh boy. neutral" and the people that were on the side with Wendy and saw her first were going crazy. lol

That's mean and untrue. I felt a lot of love going out to LG both when he passed us in the Macy's line and onstage in First Avenue. What i think ppl don't 'get' is that those trademark songs that he sings are as revolutionary as Prince's 'Uptown.' Larry's message asks people to come together and realize we are all brothers and sisters striving for the same things. Maybe Prince even encourages Larry to continue to play the same songs hoping that the message will make it thru the dense cloud that permeates society. Lots of people that still don't 'get it.' The reoccuring theme, the stark statement that we are all in this together, falls on deaf ears. Maybe Prince agrees to have Larry play those same songs, despite the naysayers, hoping that even one person will realize what they're singing about. Nothing is going to change much until EVERYDAY PEOPLE get it. So what if we have to hear them again, they are good, funky tunes with an important message. Big deal, not many complain when they hear Prince play the same songs. Larry is a legend and an excellent bass player that Prince has chosen to perform with. Find a new perspective.
The 'fuzz' was there because they like to be in control and if they had their way, we would never hear Everyday People or Thank U for letting me be myself.' One female cop quipped as we leaving "what's the matter? did he play "BEAT IT?"
Ignorance is bliss. disbelief

Factual corrections:
1. It's not "Larry's message", but rather "Sly's message".
2. A lot of Prince fans do complain when Prince plays the same songs, again.
3. Larry's message is skewed because he always says "you are everyday people" instead of "we are everyday people", thus not really "coming together". (however, in some ways he's right - he's out of the ordinary)

Thank you...

And while it's a lost cause attempting to explain anything to anyone who uses the term "naysayer," no, there's nothing mean or untrue about it. It's now 10 years since Larry Graham first started joining Prince onstage in his silly white suit and most people were as sick of it then as they are now. No new songs (except for the blip on the radar known as the drivel of GCS2000). He's not even performing his own songs - playing "Everyday People" and other Sly tracks makes him little more than a glorified cover band. It's little different than if the sax player from Huey Lewis & the News toured without Huey Lewis and played "The Power of Love." Nobody wants to see that either. If I want to hear the message of "Everyday People," I'll pop in a greatest hits CD...at least until Sly hits the road again.

Graham was a talented bass player. But he's been playing the same notes for far too long and it's tiresome.

We all know that Prince has been spending less and less time in Minneapolis lately. I thought his return to First Avenue and the "cleaning up" of Paisley Park were a sign that he might start spending more time in his old stomping ground. But this incident surely won't make him eager to return to Minneapolis, for good, now will it. sad

Actually, his speech to say thanks and tell us we were done for the night was incredibly heartfelt and sweet. touched He will be back.

I heard disappointment in his voice when he told us goodbye. I think he really wanted to keep going.

Still a great show, even though it got cut short before all those awesome songs.

I have to agree with Carrie...He didn't have to come out and say anything and he did. This proves he wanted to play more but just couldn't because of the authorities. I was disappointed but not with Prince. I believe the liquor being served after hours is the issue. I had a great time! I was in the front row to the left of the stage...JAMMIN'!!!

I really don't understand this discussion about Larry Graham. Must be his kind-of-father role in Prince's life, that ppl are not willing to accept. Musical fact is: Larry invented the slap bass - one of the key ingredients of FUNK music. Larry created incredible, innovative and groundbreaking Funk songs such as Hair, Jam, The Entertainer, Pow, It's the engine in me, release yourself or can you handle it. Graham Central Station was a brilliant Funk band and a main influence for every Funk musician after. You don't have to lower his importance by making him a little sideman of Sly Stone. Regarding Sound innovation, Funkiness and importance for musical history, Larry should be up there with Maceo. Regarding actual live performances he should remember those good old days of his own explosive albums and play Pow and Foxy Lady rather than doing Sly's hits. Can you handle it?

I agree with all of ya - I think his message WAS very heartfelt and sweet as far as the fans in the audience were concerned; I could also hear frustration in his voice when he made his closing announcement - he was NOT happy, but he wasn't being a bitchy diva and he closed the show gracefully for us.

Yeah. I know Bob Dylan is from Minnesota, but he's not really synonymous with Minneapolis like Prince is. I've read stories of people flocking to First Avenue, Paisley Park, and parts of Minneapolis after Purple Rain came out, and people still go there today to see the city where Prince lives.

I don't think Bob Dylan wore his city on his sleeve the way Prince does. He's given props to the city and name-drops often during concerts and in songs. He also continued to live in the twin cities during the height of his fame and decades afterward.

I'm not saying Prince was the first-ever musician to come from Minneapolis, but I think he took the city's fame to new hieghts, music-wise.

i relate dylan more to new york/greenwich village than i do minneapolis...the fact that he's from MN seems more like cool trivia than any kind of deep association - especially when you look at prince's ties with his home state over the years.

I have to agree as well. This homecoming was special for him as well as us and he was fully prepared to go all night. It was indeed very sweet of him to come back out and talk to us and you could hear that he was genuinely disappointed to be shut down that way.

I would rather not have known that he was planning to play The Dance and The Q of U because that makes me feel like crying. I'd rather concentrate on the incredibly awesome performance that we did witness and the fact that he promised to come back...hopefully at Paisley Park next time. cool

we did hear CONTROVERSY and GOTTA BROKEN HEART AGAIN. in FIRST AVENUE.

if that had been all he did, it woulda been worth all that waiting in line and scheduling drama...just knowing that i got to see him play those songs that he used to play at 1st Ave is still messing with my head in the most delicious way. nod

Silly as it may sound, I'd encourage anyone who was at the show to write letters to the mayor and the police department. If the authorities in "riot gear" reports are true, I'd say this was a huge PR fuck up. Even if the bars close at 3:00 and Prince hadn't finished his set, there's a more proper way to end the show.

And while I don't expect the authorities to put Prince on a pedestal and kiss his ass, you think they'd at least make an exception in this case and let the legend who put their city on the musical map play a bit late.

They did by letting him play almost 50 minutes late. No other act would have been allowed to do so. Prince should have taken the stage earlier at the Target Center if he wanted to play longer at First Avenue. He KNEW the curfew was 3:00 and he didn't take the stage until 2:45.

You dind't ask, but here's my 2% of a Dolla.

I don't think none of this would be talked about if.....

1. He started the Macy's gig ON TIME.

So let's say he plays at 4 and does an hour set, that gives him 3.5 hours to prepare for his Target Center Show. He could have drove to P Park, got something to eat, knocked on a few doors and gave out a few Watchtower and Awake mags. Played a pick up game of B Ball over on Dupont Ave North.

2. Start Target Center ON TIME.

The doors were scheduled to open at 7:30. By 8:30, they were wrapping up soundcheck. He's the rumor I heard on the Radio today. They said that Prince called Wendy Saturday and told her he wanted her to play with him. So she dropped everything and flew to Mpls. She landed minutes after 9pm, and he wanted to wait for her.

Yeah, OK.

So let's say it starts on time and he does the 2:15 set. It's now 10:45, That gives you 4 hrs 15 minutes until First Ave closes. The Loading Door from Target Center is approx 100 yards to First Ave's loading door. Wheel dem shyts over there and set up. With all the taking down, setting up, soundcheck, Prince could have been onstage by 1 am at the latest.

That would have gave him 2 hours to do his thang before the fuzz showed up.

Now I know shyt happens and things don't work out when you're doing so many things, I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

I shouted "Hey, what's this 15 song shyt!" biggrin
Life my azz muthafucka, dis is a bitness!!

Here's what Prince was supposed to play before the Police stopped the First Ave. Show:

“We’re at First Avenue,” Prince said as he strummed the beginning of “Controversy’ “We gotta do it.”

Shortly after he sang “wish there were no rules,” Prince caved into the rules. “The authorities say we gotta go,” he said 70 minutes into his late, late set that started at 2:45 a.m. Sunday.”We always listen to the authorities. I promise I’ll be back.”

He was 15 songs into a planned 24-tune set. Here’s what he played — and didn’t get to play.

1. 3121 2. Girls & Boys 3. Feel 4 U 4. Controversy 5. blues song about a cockeyed woman who asks for pepper but looks at the salt 6. Satisfied 7. Down by the Riverside (instrumental featuring horn section) 8. Broken Heart Again 9. Love Is a Losing Game (Amy Winehouse tune sung by Shelby J) 10. Love Changes (Mother’s Finest tune, by Shelby again) 11. Thank You (the Sly Stone classic w/ Larry Graham on bass) 12. Hair (a Chaka Khan/Larry Graham oldie) 13. Sing a Simple Song (more Sly) 14. Everyday People (you know it’s Sly) 15. Alphabet Street

At this point, Prince and the band exited, and everyone expected an encore — except all we got was Prince’s speech about the authorities.

Here’s what was still left on the set list:

16. Baby Love 17. The Dance 18. Let’s Go 19. Anotherloverholeinyourhead 20. The Question of U 21. Peach 22. Lolita 23. Black Sweat 24. Kiss

What did you think of the late, late show? Please post your opinion here:

The show was blistering! It was the bomb! Except for the "Man" Shutting First Avenue down (they were bastards for that!) The intro was kickin...and once again, I got a good place!

I have to disagree a little with you: First Avenue was my favorite, then Macys, and then Target Center. The acoustics at First Avenue and at Macys were alot better than the Target Center- Target Center had this weird echo, and sometimes I couldn't hear what he or Sheila E. were saying. I guess I got spoiled going to Vegas, and hearing him in intimate settings. He really seemed to enjoy himself at Macys. I mean, why else would he lean back, and fall into the crowd!!

It seems like everyone is complaining or concerned about his late performances or the police shutting down First Avenue early. Who cares! You got to see him, right? You have to remember one thing: It was a great experience! When was the last time you saw Prince perform three times in one day?! That was truely amazing, and I loved every minute of it, and wouldn't trade my experience for anyting.
