Wow a million bucks for 6 songs smile People were bashing MJ in a different thread for playing a birthday party so I wonder if they will hit this thread.

Prince is sure doing a bunch of stuff this year that I never thought he would do.

hey, prince gotta eat. doritos ain't cheap. well, they are. but i'm guessing prince doesn't have a costco card.

Dude's got BILLS, too. Can you imagine what it costs just to keep Paisley Park open on a daily basis? (cue the Purple Rain line: "DON'T I KEEP THE HEAT ON???!?!?!") And he's got a WHOLE LOTTA people on the payroll and they ain't gettin' peanuts.

I can imagine Prince giving the money to the band. Last time I was at an aftershow he mentioned that the money would go the hardworking members of the band and crew. Having said that though, I think that he probably didn't refuse the all expenses trip to Tx smile

Sure a million buck is a lot money in some parts of the world but probably not in his.

P.S. So who is uber rich in Tx, and likes Prints and Grupo Fantasma?

Honestly I don't see what the difference is between getting a million for an arena show or a b'day party... Don't we all have jobs and do it to the best of our ability...? I think what tickles people is the fact that playing at some randomn b'day party doesn't sound as prestigeous as playing the staples center.. in the end 100 people can have as much fun as 10000..

Also, did anybody consider the fact that this person actually loves his wife so much that he was ready to spend that much money on her b'day just to make her dream come true...

I think that's priceless...

just my 1 cent...

One million to play 6 songs is frigging ridiculous.

Prince revs up the Belmont

About 300 lucky Austinites got to hear Prince — yes, Prince — play "Little Red Corvette" and other faves at a private party at the Belmont on West Sixth Street on Saturday.

Kirsty Wigglesworth
ASSOCIATED PRESS

The spectacular shindig, thrown by Austin philanthropist couple John McHale and Chris Mattson, was originally going to feature just Grupo Fantasma, who've become the Purple One's favorite band in recent months. But throw in a rumored million dollars, and you also get Prince, who fronted Grupo on eight or nine songs, including a James Brown workout that dwarfed the sound of all those motorcycles. He also slayed the delirious crowd with a solo acoustic version of his trademark "Corvette."

It's been done before anyway - didn't Prince Albert of Monaco hire him to play a private gig once? And the other year he did that Versace private gig too...

i can't believe people are getting worked up about this either way. making and performing music is his JOB, it's what he DOES. if someone wants to give him money for doing his job, i don't see what's so inappropriate about that, sheesh. there are a kajillion other reasons to bitch about prince - this ain't one of them! lol

at one of the 3121 vegas shows, prince did a little rant in which he said "free the music? ain't nothing free."

and to an extent, i agree with him...why shouldn't he make money for the music he makes? is he dutybound to provide us with music free of charge, just to "keep the art pure"?

anyway, what artist has EVER followed that philosophy?!

while i do miss the days when he was throwing around new music like it was birdseed, it's his PREROGATIVE to be that generous with his work...not his RESPONSIBILITY.

sorry. i can't see a problem with this at all.

Apparently, the performance was done on an outside patio or courtyard at the Belmont Restaurant and there happened to be a HUGE bike rally/ride in Austin this weekend. So the bikers were roaring up an down 6th Street.

Staying true to HIS art as PRINCE sees fit (not how YOU believe he should) does not mean he has to turn down a million dollar pay day to remain a true artist in YOUR judgmental eyes. You may not agree with his methods or motivations but who are you, or any of us, to judge his actions.

The difference is that mirrorbestfrined is saying that Prince is "selling out" for doing this and is not a "true" artist. What I'm REALLY saying is that Prince is entitled to go sit in a cave for the rest of his life and pull a Howard Hughes on the world OR start performing at weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, and/or retirement parties if HE so chooses. I may not like it, but ultimately it is his art (which IMO getting PAID should not preclude or prevent him from still being a "true" artist, whatever THAT means), it is HIS life and if someone has the dough to spend and wants to see Prince perform in their master bathroom it's Prince's right to do so if he chooses to sans the judgment. That's what I'm defending.
