I thought the show was awesome but the setlist was obviously for the more casual type fan (even less 3121 material, rarities). If I had my choice I would have picked some different songs but HEY anytime I can see him live.....I am happy + I expected this type of setlist for a Citibank show
Now for the Earth Tour, that should be different..... [Edited 5/20/07 18:37pm] also very cool meeting some members: Baboo, Ronnie, Joanne, xplnyrslf, and Judith! Hope to see you guys next time out!!!! [Edited 5/20/07 18:39pm] "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

Larry did that thing he does (see: other posts in regards to my views on Larry and his place in a Prince show). Maceo was in the house, which kept Prince energized...he seemed to get kind of bored to me. And even at one point cut "Shh!" early and started playing "Peach" but started singing that blues "Rock Me Baby (All Night Long)" and when he finished apologetically said "I had to do that for me..." Prince was fine, I got bored due to the lack of spontaneous moments, and safe setlist. But I really think the biggest downer was the fans. Now I am all for people experiencing Prince...and I hate to be elitist but: I would say over 50% of the people there were seeing there first show, and didn't know some of the new stuff ("Black Sweat" "Lolita" even "Musicology"). Also the audience was super tame, and all and all sleepy (they would never lasted a evening at 3121 and it's late showtimes). I think the whole Citi bank thing not only screwed over the older more experienced fans (playin the same ole shit, and the weird way to get tix) but it seemed to me-more of a status thing. All these old dudes with there young plastic girlfriends. I live in SF and there is a specific kind of person they were. I am not sure if this truly applys to them...but they all seemed like "Marina People" (the marina is kind of snooty, upper class, white yuppy kind of folk). IT seemed like they got a Citibank break on getting tix to the show and took them. I play music, and I played in a band and sometimes I would tell my friends and fans-"hey, this show might not be your vibe..." Now granted, Prince is a big star...and is not in the position to really do that...but he's alienated people before (via-religious beliefs, etc). I wish there was a secret handshake, or wink or something. I of course had a great time, but I really was bummed on the whole corporate (including double the price of 3121 tix) for the sake of Citibank wanting a cut. Also, the biggest joke was-they didn't even accept credit cards in the venue. I am sure by the time he comes back around these parts again-he'll be fresh...I will be here. But hopefully among the Prince family, and not the johnny come lately's and Purple Rain heads/ truly, Nero So weird to agree with your review of the jaded setlist, but to have a completely different take on why the show lacked true juice. I thought the crowd was committed to having a great time. Most were on their feet the whole time, except when Prince asked otherwise or there was an equipment change or break onstage. The crapped out sound didn't help his attitude. It was at its worst, especially the static from his mic, when he launched into "Shhh" - I truly believe that's why he cut it short. There was no "marina" vibe where I was (orchestra center 10th row to right side of stage). There were some senior citizens who seemed to get their groove on alongside everyone else. The setlist was decided by Prince. The decision to play Purple Rain was made by Prince, not the "purple rain heads." Same with inviting Larry onstage, etc. We have a cause and effect disagreement, I think. Prince and the audience create the show, but in this case, with this willing audience in a somewhat intimate venue, it was on Prince define this show as "amazing," or merely "very good." He decided to play it safe. We all could have handled a lot more real music. I could have done with 1/10th the amount of comic relief. And the audience participation on stage part hit a new low in those selected, except for the twins with the twinz! A very good show. He is capable of so much more. Frankly, in my opinion, the 10 min Superbowl show packed 10X more juice than this 2 hour performance. "When they tell me 2 walk a straight line, I put on crooked shoes"

Next time around I'm hopeful he plays a larger venue with a few dates and maybe an aftershow. Remember the days when he played the bill graham auditorium or did an aftershow at dna or warfield. Keep my fingers crossed that he comes back to the states after the london shows and has new material to play.

Even so, I had my expectations set pretty high, and quite a few doubts, and he blew them all out the window. I thought it was an aweosme experience. [Edited 5/20/07 16:41pm] Yeah, not taking away from your experience, but people seeing Prince for the first time usually give an extatic review because it is such a dream come true and certainly don't focus on the bad points, whereas older fans tend to have more to compare to and are less over-whelmed by the occasion. My first Prince concert was back in '90 the Nude Tour, I thought it was an outstanding show at the time, but looking back now it really wasn't one of his outstanding tours, certainly he has done better before and since. A longtime fan's review can come across as jaded... but sometimes it is simply born out of comparing it with lots of other occasions and personal experiences.

ORPHEUM REVIEW
His white-hot Purpleness and Sheila E. in concert? Priceless. Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic Monday, May 21, 2007 Las Vegas has not been lost on Prince. When he walked onstage at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, as his huge, crunching band crashed down on the end of a walloping "Down by the Riverside," and as he tossed his dark glasses into the audience and took a deep bow, Prince made the place feel like the big room of a casino. After a three-month run at the Rio Hotel and Casino, his Purpleness would appear to be a different entertainer. He brought his new revue-style show to town as part of a credit card promotion, "Traveling Through Life Presented by Citi/AAdvantage," where only people who signed up for credit card service could buy tickets to the concert. As a result, he gave this spectacular, intimate concert to a houseful of curious, upscale onlookers, not his rabid fans. There was barely a purple outfit in the house. Prince is the artist currently at the absolute top of his game, the prime of his life, 20 years after all the hits. His breathtaking halftime performance at this year's Super Bowl served notice on the entire nation. With the death of James Brown and the banishment to Dubai of Michael Jackson, today Prince is Soul Brother No. 1. At the Orpheum, he was a dazzling sight in all white. His falsetto swooped and soared. His guitar playing rivaled Hendrix. His crack band executed like a gleaming, supersonic machine. He drew his set list from the far corners of his songbook, everything except his hits -- despite him muttering, "So many hits, so little time," as he launched "Lolita" from the "3121" CD. Huh? But he never let up the intensity, even if he relied heavily on slow, syrupy ballads. He opened with a long, slow blues, "Satisfied," cutting straight to the smoldering eroticism that is his specialty. Before he even took the stage, he let the Escovedo family warm up the band with molten Latin percussion, followed by Sheila E. doing "The Glamorous Life," the song he wrote and produced for the Latina bombshell in 1984. He used Brown's famous saxophonist Maceo Parker ("take me to the bridge ...") and brought out Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham for a couple of Sly Stone numbers. By the time he brought back Sheila E. for "A Love Bizarre," he had the crowd exhausted, disoriented, delirious. If it had been a house of his people -- rather than the credit card company's customers -- they would have torn the walls down. The band is powered by bassist Josh Dunham and his amazing wife, drummer Cora Dunham-Coleman, who hands down wins most valuable player award for the night. Prince himself supplied the sensational lead guitar -- played an exquisite B.B. King on "Rock Me Baby" -- and when he wasn't doing that, he was dancing like Nureyev on speed. Vocalist Shelby Johnson brought old-fashioned soul to the sound and, as if to make the point, even sang a heated version of Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man." Two additional background vocalists, all long legs and bottoms and very little skirt, brought a lot of motion to the show with the sort of dancing not often seen outside gentlemen's clubs. When Prince and Sheila E. dragged 15 or so goofballs out of the front rows to dance with the band, it was controlled chaos onstage and Prince made the most of it. He used a lot of purple backlighting and frequently asked for the already dim lights to be dropped even lower. "Make it sexy," he would say, and the lights would go out. Not using spotlights may help preserve his delicious, mysterious image, but over-driving the sound -- another Prince concert hallmark -- just muddies the delivery. His band is so killer, his singing so great, it's a shame to lose all the nuances in the electric din. By the end of the two and a half hour performance, when he finally gave them a hit, the inevitable "Purple Rain," he had taken these people on a trip -- a challenging, demanding, thrilling, dizzying ride. These credit card holders may have walked in wondering just who this guy was and what he was all about, but he let them know. Funnily enough this is the second time I've been in an audience with Mr. Williams. The first was an employee screening of Star Wars Episode III at the metreon. George Lucas and his kids were sitting in the row behind me, and Robin Willaims a couple rows below me to the left. Wearing a bright orange shirt, and shorts

Not that odd -- he lives here, you know. His son used to go to my son's school. You'd see him at the school fair, just hanging out, everyone being all cool and ignoring him.
I liked the show (a day when I see Prince is ALWAYS a good day) -- I never went to Vegas, so I had myself mentally prepared to just enjoy the Vegas show. But the sound was really muddy. The Orpheum is a theater, not an auditorium. The crowd seemed ok to me after the show started, but before the vibe was so un-Princey. Everyone wearing jeans. I never wear jeans to see Prince, and especially not when I paid $225 for a ticket! People were dressed to see Jackson Browne. __________________________________________

Dress jacket, dress pants, dress shoes, and one purple glove Luckily I was sitting next to some Prince fans. The two girls next to me had to hug each other when Prince came on, and there was a hardcore fan who had been going to concerts since Purple Rain who I got talking to before and after the show. We groved and rocked the night away. People were singing, yelling, dancing and screaming. The atmosphere was incredible, and I -loved- the setlist, seeing as how I've never been to vegas or seen Prince live until now, so I'm greatful he brought that great performance here for us bay area people to see. God I wish I was back in that theater with Prince. It was an incredible night.

Hey Y'all!
First time posting, first time at a Prince concert. It was incredible for me and my girls. We had killer seats even though we were in the second to last row in the balcony! And we were dressed for Prince...Emily in Disco ball mirror mini dress, black fishnet stockings with glitter, pointy black boots and lilac wig, Monica in tight red wrap dress with blackfishnets, seam in the back, cfm platforms, Mercedes, purple paisly mini baby doll, high strappy heels. Me, purple velvet vintage minidress with gold braid ala Seargeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, white Go Go spandex bell bottom flares, gold platforms, purple toes. We sent him all our love! Loved the crowd we had in the balcony and the rest of you sounded pretty amazing to us up there! Peace.

I realize I let loose a little too much at the concert....must have been all the wine I drank beforehand....standing on my chair....not being particularily lady-like. Yes, I recall, back in the day, Purple Rain, and how famous it made Prince and I was a fan. In the meantime, I've : established a successful career, raised a family, have a credit card or two, (citibank) and now have the freedom to see him in concert. I was at 3121. I don't think anyone here would appreciate it if I said he was "slumming it"? THAT's NOT what I think. You need to understand Prince has been around for a long time and has fans of all income groups. But hopefully among the Prince family, and not the johnny come lately's and Purple Rain heads/ truly, Nero Indeed! I must admit I tore myself from the marina and the wine tasting to see Prince. ONLY so I could name drop at the next cocktail party. You know, with my age group, it looks so cool to say I was at a Prince concert. If your biggest disappointment was the crowd,(snooty yuppies, etc) would you prefer everyone look like transients?? Done with this topic. [Edited 5/21/07 22:20pm] huh?...what?

Done with this topic. [Edited 5/21/07 22:20pm] [/quote] huh?...what?[/quote] calm down. There have been all sorts of people at prince shows. This guy just got stuck by some that fit your financial status that sucked. If you fit the cliche so what? In Vegas on two different nights it was two different norms. White girls who flirted and black girls who were aggresive. It is what /what it is.

I don't need to calm down. Is it necessary to criticise those in the audience? For both venues, people were there to see Prince and have a good time. That's all. And I quote Nero : "I am sure by the time he comes back around these parts again-he'll be fresh...I will be here. But hopefully among the Prince family, and not the johnny come lately's and Purple Rain heads " There's room enough for all types at his concerts..... [Edited 5/22/07 14:18pm]

[Edited 5/22/07 14:18pm] [/quote] Sure, but performers vibe off the audience. Clearly Prince was having a disconnect with the audience. The whole Peach vamp thing, and at the end he said "Sorry, I needed to that for me..." He wasn't clicking with them because alot of them were there for the scene, the gift bag, and the whole "I went to Prince thing..." I wasn't dissing all people from the marina, I was painting the picture of a certain cliche. And if you're from the city you know that there is stereotype about Marina folks...I was using it to paint a picture. And that was my gripe... nero

Oh my goodeness. I got so tired of over hearing people say, "What's 3121?" I told some ladies that it was his most recent album, and they absolutely no idea what I was talking about. At least they enjoyed the show. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com
