i soooo don't see this happening, not with prince being so tight with larry and the enormous/infamous feud between larry and sly back in the day. maybe that's all cleared up (i harbor doubts), but then there's the whole issue of prince clamping up around people he views as huge influences. he never worked with james, i don't see it happening with sly.

I HOPE I AM WRONG. nod

but i don't see it happening. sad

well he has been on stage with JB, miles davis etc it would be cool to see sly on stage for a song or two, or be the support act.
though if it did happen i'd proabably miss it cos couldn't get tickets til the 18th!! maybe paul mccartney will support if the sun's rumours are to be believed!!! eek

paul opening for prince? whaaat??? lol

though i'd love to hear prince and paul duet on "why don't we do it in the road", since it sounds like prince is singing it on the white album anyway. eek

yeah saw it here http://www.thesun.co.uk/a...35,00.html

only reason i slightly took it on board was because i also heard a rumour of him supporting the stones at the o2 in august so maybe he will use it as a way of promoting his new album this summer... doubt it though
probably more likely to see prince as the guest of jagger and co though!!! wink

Sly was playing in Vegas during one of the 3121 weekends (end or March or April, it's all a blur now). I hoped for a suprise collaboration, but it never came to pass. Maybe Prince has a strict rule about not playing with people who threatened to have Larry killed back in the day while frying their brains. confused

We have bought tickets for the Sly concert. I really hope he has got his act together as last time he played it has terrible reports.

Just seems weird coming all the way over to the UK to play Bournemouth. If you are going to do just one gig in the UK surely you would go for London?

Oh yeah... the Sly tickets cost more then the purple pixie.

Sly live would be so awesome! - if it lived up to my expectations which unfortunately are built up from what was recorded many years ago.

It is strange how its so close to the Prince gigs.

Dear all,

My tuppence worth on the potential for a Sly/Prince hook up at the end of July/ beginning of August in the UK.

Have been watching and waiting for news of Sly Stone for many years now, and it's a miracle that he's playing - let alone touring Europe - at all. Sly has to all intents and purposes been missing (quite often literally for years at a time) as a creative force for the best part of the last 30 years, the reasons why have been well documented elsewhere. He was a great loss but the influence has lived on.

On a personal level I'd love to see this take place no matter how briefly as Prince and Sly are probably the two musicians who've inspired me most in my life. Prince's closeness to Larry Graham aside (which is again well documented), it's worth remembering that music often trancends certain rivalries and old arguments. Sly will soon be an old man, and to my knowledge is not in the best of health...perhaps if both parties are aware they're in the same vicinity bygones will be bygones on this occasion as we know Prince is a great admirer of Sly and has been since childhood. The funk is its own reward as George Clinton would say...

By July 28th Prince will be in London no doubt rehearsing and preparing for a major run of arena shows...perhaps a brief cameo appearance - a la 'We Gonna Make it Funky' with Maceo Parker - is not the best use of his time. Plus Bournemouth is a decent drive from London, it's not as if it's just across town.

The one thing in favour of the collaboration however might be that Bournemouth is the last night of the Sly Stone European tour, so perhaps there's a chance he might appear at a Prince aftershow at the start of his run i.e. Aug 1st. Never say never...I'm still amazed I have a ticket to see Sly...the quality of the show is not foremost in my mind, am just delighted to get the chance to see a true musical innovator in person. His influence on Prince is massive, there's really no doubt about that. I saw Little Richard play a couple of years back and just to hear the man scream was worth the price of entry, no Little Richard, no Beatles.

There has been a lot of collaboration with other 'Family Stone' members in the very recent past as I'm sure everyone knows, but the moment that sticks in my mind the most was at the London Hippodrome show in 1998. Prince was playing the Sly classic 'Thank You' which he then began to jam and slow down into 'Thank You for Talkin' to me Africa' the murky but brilliant funk grind which closes out the Riot Goin' On album. The mood was definitely melancholy that night and he cut the tune short and went back to the standard rehearsed set with U Got The Look etc...Larry Graham was on bass that night. The incident really sticks in my mind to this day...am not sure what Prince felt but it certainly seemed unscripted and that made it interesting.

If anyone else is a fan of both artists/groups please do share your thoughts and feel free to comment on any of the above.

In the meantime I'll keep everything crossed for this taking place - and me being there. Even if it doesn't - what a summer of concert...did anyone say embarrassment of riches?

T

Thats the best post i've read for a while!! Nice thoughts tokyo, makes me want get tickets not only for sly in bournemouth (was unsure before), but also for little richard next time he's on tour!!
Here's hoping then for sly/prince together on stage, but if not i'll make do with seeing them separately, you're right it's not exactly the worst scenario!
