I loved the show on Saturday night. It was very different from when I went on 3/30 and 3/31. On those nights he did more of his hits. Saturday night he really funked.. probably because Larry was there. Babyface was seated one table over from me and I could tell that he was really enjoying the show. Prince invited him up to jam on the guitar for a little while. I was really surprised to see Wayne Brady when he went on stage to sing “Play that Funky Music”. Prince’s cover of “The Long and Winding Road” almost brought me to tears. I have never heard it sung like that! I was mesmerized by Renato’s solo of “The Dance”. I practice to that song several nights a week and could picture myself dancing to Renato's instrumental... The song tells such a story and I believe he captured the emotion of it so well. Pink Cashmere, If I Was Your Girlfriend and Musicology were a lot of fun to here. He also did Cream, Lolita (am I the only on that doesn’t care for that song, maybe it will grow on me), Purple Rain, and Nothing Compares 2 U. Sorry that I don’t have a complete set list but I was in the zone. I agree with the other comment that the crowd could’ve been a little better. After seeing an awesome show by The Time on Friday I went by 3121 with a few of the band members. While I was in the 3121 shop I could of course hear Prince but I noticed that the crowd wasn’t as responsive as when I was there before. I don’t think he even came back out after Purple Rain. Maybe they were entranced... (I saw that happen at a show by "The Roots". The audience was stuck. ?uestlove has that effect on people lol ) The same goes for Saturday. It seemed like the crowd didn’t know lyrics of some of the songs when he asked us to sing.… just my opinion. But I guess in a selfish way that was good for me because our side of the club was off the hook and he knew it. He gave us a lot of attention. I was having so much fun dancing my butt off and he said “I see you girl!”. I was all smiles all night. Shelby was fantastic as usual. Like I said before, her voice is out of this world yet she is so down to earth. I was able to speak with her a few times and she has a great personality. She has really inspired me as far as being comfortable with the depth of my voice. I am really excited about her upcoming project. The only disappointment that I had is that we had to be refunded the cost of the aftershow. Especially since a few members of The Time were there on Friday and could’ve jammed with him. All in all I think it was a fantastic show for those that love REAL music. Music is should be fun, spontaneous, and filled with emotion. If you want to hear him sing the same songs you should save some money and watch videos. Thanks to the band and Prince for giving me a fantastic show. (and hey Morris, I’m still laughing about that “the bomb” joke lol )

Some of you pick on Larry Graham because you just don't have anything else to.
He is no different from any other guest that P has on the stage. I mean people are bitching because he wears a hat and plays some classic funk. WTF

You got a guy praising Babyface over Larry Graham. Only on Prince.org.

I've seen Larry do that thing he does for the last 10 years now. It's boring and tired. Him and his super annoying and creepy wife. Why does she have to jump on stage?...Bummed me out. I think Larry is one of the greatest bassists of all time, maybe my favorite-but too much of that shtick. I want to see PRINCE. And Babyface will probably never set foot on a Prince stage again...I will give him some love, whats wrong with that. He surprised me.

And the "RIta" he was referring to WAS NOT "RIta" from Bologna...he said her name was "Rita Jackson"

why did I come back to this place?

Don't you have your OWN life. I mean you have to continually go to Prince concerts. Pathetic. I think it would be best if you just went away.

That is just not very nice. Why be a hater?

I presume you are talking to the guy ripping on Larry.

Kmrtnz - Whoever stopped the Time from getting into 3121 should be slapped in the face. mad That's just wrong.

as for this reported "bad attitude" of the crowd. The fact that we'll geered up for 3/31 being the last show. I started thinking of saving for the tour. Maybe the unexpected shows left it open for too many casual fans. I would imagine that the fans will be able to re group of the rest of April and represent ! cool

That just sounds like you projecting - you're bored with the Vegas experience so you insist Prince must be too. The fact is no one is forcing Prince to do anything, and from various sources it has been pretty much confirmed it was entirely Prince's decision to add extra dates.

I think there's a case for seeing one artist too much and getting bored with the show. Prince is well known for varying his set-list, but some fans expect too much, it is foolish to think he is going to drop certain songs simply because YOU are bored with them.

As usual the hating of Larry Graham stems from people not liking the effect he had on Prince in converting him to the JW faith, nothing to do with his ability as a guest performer. It amuses me when people insist Prince has split with thee JWs and LG and is going to go 'dirty' again - only for LG to re-appear time after time, it must be gutting for them! But again, if you're bored with LG playing with Prince you must be seeing him too often, as it is a relatively rare event these days.

Agreeing with your last paragraph. I think people who keep wishing Prince would walk away from being a JW and drop Larry as a friend is missing something in their own lives. Imagine someone who doesn't know you from Adam, dropping their religious beliefs and their close friends just so you can fulfill your personal fantasy. It's almost a joke when you think about it. If being a JW was his personal choice, then so be it. If he ever decides to change his faith, then that too is his personal choice. We may be fans, but we don't have the right to decide his personal choices or make decisions for him. It's suppose to be about the music.

If you attend one of his shows, always expect that he may invite another artist to join him on stage. This is no surprise, other artists have been doing that for years, so I don't understand why fans who call themselves fans, don't know by now this is what he does.

The Prince we see now, is Prince, so you either accept it or move on, and if you choose to move on then that will be one less negative fan in the venue whose presence won't be there to devour the positive vibe.
[Edited 4/17/07 7:44am]

Damn, what's up with all the defensiveness and protectionism. I just brought up a few mild criticisms. I never said Prince should break up with Larry or give up his born-again religion. Has P reached that level of sainthood where a fan is not aloud to express any objective and constructive critical comments? I personally like the bass skills of LG and would like to see him improvise "new" jams with our P. P is human and sometimes even brilliant, genius artists get into a rut. This is why I believe he has been playing so many covers over the last couple of years. There is no doubting his live skills but I believe his songwriting has lacked the personal quirky introspection it used to have. And I personally believe P respects challenging and intelligent fans. I didn't join anybody's cult and if I'm paying his bills I don't need to "accept" anything.

I aint gonna say no names..... but that was messed up about not letting The Time in. I'm sure it would have been different if Jerome was there....but.... I agree with your thoughts on the crowd too. but that leaves me to think that 4/28 is gonna be off the chain! Wish i could be there but this hike from MD is no joke. I will be sure to check them when they get to the next location though. SCNDLS i hope you have some tight boots to show off, lady!!! Showstoppa!!! lol

Let's hope so. Alright you purple hippies and funk soldiers we've GOTS to turn out the last shows in April. It would be so anticlimactic after the awesome experience in March to do anything less. But I'ma have a good time basking in the purple glow regardless of the crowd, vibe, set list, cover songs, Larry, tambourines, or whatever. . . headbang

That's right "Lady Boots" you better bring it (I won't be there, just in spirit only so you will hear the echo of my "soul clap" or shall I say "Chu'ch clap" lol )..don't forget to shout some Amens, Welllls and Hallelujahs, at Brother Prince especially if he sings "Satisfied"...'kay? lol

...and get that positive flow going when DJ Rashida start spinning that music...and oh yeah...behave yourself too..don't hit anybody with those boots. lol

I can't believe I'm going to say this...but, Trevor (one of P's bodyguards) was doing his job that night. We showed up unannounced with a group of 7.

And, Trevor got a ear full from one of my relatives on Saturday night about this and he went through the roof. I stayed out of it and just listened to him vent back at her and what he said was what Jerome Benton told me last night. "Prince is in control of everything at that club down to who is allowed and who is not, you can't just show up with no notice, even the fellas from The Time. Unless Prince told Trevor to let them in then he would of, but they did not pre-arrange this and Trevor could not interrupt Prince at that time because he was on stage." Bean (Jellybean) got verbally upset, anyone who was standing near had to of heard him. At that time I was a bit bummed for Monte, Bean and Freeze but the next day it was pretty clear as to what actually happened. I'm not fond of Trevor myself fishslap but it's obvious that he was just doing what he was paid to do. Also, you may of heard...Jerome is no longer with The Time. Rumor has it Prince isn't too happy as to how Morris handled this whole departure with Jerome...maybe this was why he didn't pre-arrange for them to be on a guestlist knowing that they were all in town playing both nights. This wouldn't be fair to Monte and Jellybean who we all know go way back with P, but I sense it may have some truth to it. Morris had no plans either night to show his face.

On a final note about this that had me laughing so hard falloff Saturday afternoon, me and my girls met up with Monte and Morris' brother for lunch at the Boulder Station and Monte who is very quiet and modest said "I may not be able to get you into a Prince concert, but I can hook you up with a mean buffet." I'm glad he has no hard feelings biggrin Bean...that's another story pissed

Sorry to hear that kmrntz, maybe next time will be better.

Thanks for the reviews

Kmrtnz - Whoever stopped the Time from getting into 3121 should be slapped in the face. mad That's just wrong.

as for this reported "bad attitude" of the crowd. The fact that we'll geered up for 3/31 being the last show. I started thinking of saving for the tour. Maybe the unexpected shows left it open for too many casual fans. I would imagine that the fans will be able to re group of the rest of April and represent ! cool

I aint gonna say no names..... but that was messed up about not letting The Time in. I'm sure it would have been different if Jerome was there....

Oh I don't know, it always seems to me that celebs and friends constantly try to get in for free to things when buying a ticket is nothing to them compared to your average joe for which it is expensive and there's no chance of getting in for free!

Good Question. Why do you come to Prince.org? I have never been a Babyface fan aand I will take Larry Graham over Babyface any day.

Well. I usually like to talk Prince. But then I encounter someone with bad taste, and a bad attitude...then I stop posting.

I am not trying to make this a Babyface/Larry Graham conversation...Larry just bummed me out that night. So...

I don't know why you all are all sweatin' Nero so much. I was glad Larry wasn't at our shows. I've been hearing those songs for 30 years. They're cool, but
How about some funkadelic covers ?

Thanks Rev. All I was saying is that anyone who has been going to alot of Prince concerts in the last 10 years has seen alot of Larry...I went to Vegas (and brought a newbie) to see Prince...and I got about 20 minutes of Larry. Over it.

nn

p.s. I would love to see some Funkadelic covers...

Nero

lol

Good to see you back again....I always enjoyed your comments back in the day.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
