This is the review that I posted on our The Time website that I moderate. I'd loved to hear from you!!

Ok here's my night!

First of all we left San Diego Saturday and boarded my bosses plane around 11:00 am, he has a Piper 6 seat aircraft. The ride included myself, my husband Randy, Robert (my boss and pilot) and his girlfriend Kelly. The flight took us approximately an hour and 20 mins. He decided to fly into the N. Las Vegas airport since the traditional McCarron now charges an arm and a leg to park your plane overnight...I think he said over a $100 a night where this airport charges less than $10 per night. Expensive hobby I might add. But he's an excellent pilot. I have been flying with him for over 17 years now for business and several personal trips with my husband. Nice to have a private pilot around when you need one:) Well, the flight was beautiful, the day was clear not a cloud in site. We landed in Vegas around 12:30. We get out of the plane and settled into the executive airport and they arrange a shuttle to pick us up to take us to our hotels.

Ok, this is where the drama started. We are all in the shuttle and another Pilot and his wife are sharing this shuttle as well. They needed to be dropped off at some hotel not even in the city of Las Vegas, they were to be dropped off last. We get to the Aladdin where Robert and Kelly were staying and dropped them off. We pull away and are now near the Excalibur where Randy and I were staying. Something told me to ask my husband if he had his wallet. As soon as I said the word "wallet", the look on my husband's face said everything! He had left his wallet in Robert's plane which is literally 40 miles away. I immediately called Robert's cell phone, so I could get the keys to his plane and have the shuttle guy take us back to the airport and pick up the keys. So I dial his number, all of a sudden I hear Robert's cell in the back seat where he and Kelly were sitting. He forgot his phone. Remember, I said there was another Pilot and his wife that we're in the shuttle with us. So I asked them if they would mind if the shuttle took us back to the Aladdin so I can pick up the keys from Robert. The wife instantly looked at here watch, and her husband immediately said NO PROBLEM. OK! I call the Aladdin, get a hold of Robert's room, tell him I need the keys please come down and meet me by the taxi drop off and I have his phone. We get to the Aladdin, no Robert. I waited for a few minutes, and decided to call his room again, he answers, I ask him why are you not downstairs, he says he misunderstood me and thought I was to call when I got to the hotel. I think he thought he could get a quickie in before I got there. Any ways, I get his keys and I swear I thought I was going to pull his arm out of his socket...he was so nervous about me taking those keys. If I would have lost them we would have been screwed with not being able to get into his plane to go home. I promised him I would keep them safe. This whole process took maybe 15 mins. By the time I get back into the shuttle, I hear my husband (who is not afraid to tell anyone what's on his mind) say something to the affect...simmer down bitch, I said I was sorry! Oh my God, my husband is now in a verbal confrontation with this other pilot and his snoody wife (older couple). She apparently did not want to wait for me to run in and get the keys and bitched out loud the whole time I was gone, that it pissed my husband off to this extent. I immediately turned to her and apologized and asked her to have some patience, it was an honestly mistake and I would hope that if this had happened to them, that they would have an understanding party who would return the favor. So, silence! We get to their hotel, which I am not lying took us nearly 30 mins to get to...apparently when they got closer, the Pilot said shit! I should of flown into Henderson's airport...I flew into the wrong airport. Well that just fueled Randy who was biting his tongue the whole ride for me and when the door open to let them out...well, lets just say, Randy and the bitchy lady were still yelling at each other even when the door was shut the shuttle driver. I wanted to die!!!!! We get back to the airport now it's 3:30, yes that whole episode took nearly 2 and half hours. I run on the airports parking structure where the plane is parked and unlock the door and find my husband's wallet under his seat. I run back to the front where the shuttle is patiently awaiting for me, and we take off AGAIN to head to our hotel. We get to our hotel around 4:15 check in and no lie, I immediately ordered a bottle up to our room...we were in need of a drink! By the way...I did remember Robert's keys:)

So since this all took place, I now did not have the time to check out the Rio's set up with will call and all of that stuff, so we just relaxed for a while, ordered room service and got ready to head to The Rio around 8pm. We get to the Rio around 8:15 and there were around 15-20 people in the VIP line where we were told to go to since we had purchased the VIP table for an additional $375 between the four of us which also gave us a bottle of liquor and table service. Robert and Kelly show up within 10 mins after that, and no lie, we were approached by a staff member, they asked us our names, we told them, they said come with me, put wrist bands on us and took us right in and brought us to our table.

OK...here we go. Johnny who escorted in took us to our table and pointed out that next to our table was Prince's private couch where he and his friends will be. I look at Randy, Randy looks at me, Kelly looks at Robert, Robert looks at Kelly, and we all could not wipe off the smiles from our faces. I tipped Johnny $20 bucks and he said anything you need just ask. We asked if we could leave the venue and return he said no problem, Prince should be out around midnight. We left and played blackjack, which I must tell you was $25 a hand at The Rio, I was not too thrilled about the thought of dropping several hundred dollars while waiting for Prince to perform since we already dropped a grand to go to this performance. But we sat down anyway and played. We actually did fairly well, and after hour or so, we decided to got into the venue and start our table service. We ordered a bottle of Belvedere and mixers and started to get our buzz on. No one was at his couch as of yet, DJ Rashida was cutting it up, people where trickling in and we were having a great time. She was playing Cool, Get It Up, lots of old school and we were all feeling great.

This is were things may be a little fuzzy! It's nearing midnight or so and the show is starting, Prince comes out and everyone is going crazy. Sheila E and her father walk right passed me and I stopped her and asked her if she will be performing and she smiled and said you're in for a treat! She and her dad take stage, we're all going crazy. I don't remember any order of songs or any thing....I'm actually trying to remember if I remember what Prince sang...hopefully someone will post an accurate setlist to refresh my memory. Somewhere within 20 mins or so, Jerome and Terry Lewis are walking towards us and we immediately hugged and I reintroduced Jerome to Robert and his girlfriend. Robert met Jerome once before when I took him to a Time show and he's talked with Jerome via my phone when Jerome and I were eating breakfast in Vegas a few years back. Jerome then gave my husband a great big family hug and I looked at Terry and said with is fine self...HHEELLLOOO KKIIIMMBBEERRRLLYY! That was a treat. (Jerome introduced me to Terry 2 years ago when I saw The Time perform in Malibu and Terry was on stage with them and Prince sat 2 feet from me. Terry and Jerome brought me over to his mom and sister and we all sat and talked and looked back when we first all met which was somewhere around 10+ years.) That was also a great show!! Anyway, we were all very excited at this point, because now Jerome was with us and everyone that was in the VIP section was wanting to near us and our table. Jerome then went on stage for a bit and then came back off and eventually came back over to us and talked with Robert and was telling him how special I was and that I also worked for him...ok my boss looks at me and I pinch Jerome and tell him to shush. This is all relating to me helping Jerome with several things with The Family and The Time and some personal thangs...So they have a great conversation, I'm being talked up, my boss is complimenting me, Jerome is loving me, Terry his smiling at me, I have no idea where my husband is but I AM FELLING MARVELOUS!!!!!

Ok, Prince is now done...as I said I don't remember much of him perfoming, because of all the talking and drinking. This beautiful girl named Miriam comes up to me and says, can you introduce me to Jerome and Terry, so the nice person I am and the fact that she was a Selma Hayek double just more petite, I do. We wound up talking with Jerome for a while and Robert and Kelly barely stumble up to me and said they need to go back, Robert obvisously needed to sleep off that Vodka so he can fly the next day, they hand me $100 bill and tell me oh yah...Randy left as well, he was shit faced and took a cab back. I somehow missed him and he never told me he was leaving! So now, me and Miriam are alone with Jerome and Terry and the mention of the aftershow comes up. Jerome said, go around the corner and I call me when you are at the door and he and Terry left through the VIP section where the performers were and we headed out! I get to the aftershow doors and they are so many people waiting in line. I go to get my phone (which I must add is literally 5 days old and I just bought a chip so I could transfer my music from my computer to it) and I have NO phone. I lost my f_ _ _ _ _ _ phone. I could not call Jerome because I don't have his number memorized. I'm dying now. Miriam says "don't worry" Prince asked me to come to this performance tonite, his attorney Trevor knows me. OK, so now what. She calls this Trevor person, which I'm still having trouble understanding her and Prince's relationship. And he too is not answering. Somehow and this is exactly how it happened. I grabbed her hand and walked through the other door where there was no bouncer standing at and let myself and her in. NOONE stopped us! I had no idea as to where we were and where the aftershow was at, but something to me to open this other door, and I did, well it was the back entrance through the kitchen and we walked in and through the kitchen...and guess who the first person I see...Jerome. We always seem to connect this way. Jerome sits me in this seat that is literally the last seat in the back of the jazz restaurant and Prince is walking back and forth in and out of this room where the perfomers are all seated and he performs a little and walks off a little and so on. Miriam is sitting on the arm of my chair. I see my original waitress Chanel that took care of us at the VIP table and ask her for 2 extra dirty martinis and ask Jerome if he wanted anything and he looks at me and we both said at the same time "Cadillac Margarita" and high fived each other and started laughing. Well at that time, it appeared that Prince was looking right at us and I looked at Miriam to get her attention. Well not even 5 minutes later, a bouncer and a female with a walkie talkie come up to us...I thought I was gonna die, they said Ms. Prince's attorney Trevor has asked that you leave this establishment and you (meaning ME) can stay! Jerome shrugged his shoulders and held me back and said just let her go. Miriam got up and was escorted out. I honestly don't know what the hell that was about, but I was freaked out that Prince was paying that much attention to people in the back of his restaurant. Jerome left for a bit and his drink came. I was feeling a little weird by myself now thinking about my husband bailing on me that I got up with Jerome's drink about a half hour later and asked Otis one of Prince's musicians (can't remember what he plays...things are a fog), to give this drink to Jerome, I was going to leave. I thought it was wise since I was by myself, female and still had to catch a cab to get back to the Excalibur so I can bitch my husband out. As I was leaving, I heard someone say thank you for coming to 3121 I hope you enjoyed the show. So it was over at that same time anyway. I found my way to the front of the hotel where the cabs were and I saw Miriam, she waited with me for my cab and said she was confused why she was treated that way....I don't know....but something was weird about that whole thing with Prince.

I gave her a hug, thanked her for the company and got into my cab and was driven to the Excalibur, walking into my room just before 5 am. My husband jumps up and gives me a hug and asked where I was all this time, he was calling and calling my cell (I told him about losing it) he said Kim. I was tore up and didn't want anyone to catch any of it so I left. Sorry! I kissed him, said no problem and somehow got out of my dress, kicked off the pumps and hit the bed. What a night...even losing my phone, which by the way houses all of my contacts....including the fellas from The Time and my peeps. So whoever found that phone, not only has rare songs from Prince, etc on it, will see Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson, The Family contacts. I am so bummed! Hopefully they won't scolled to to the contact and willjust erase everything. I have my phone bills so I can recover all of their numbers, but any of you that know I have your numbers, please forward them to me again. I will have my replacement phone tomorrow and will try to start filling it up again over time.

I loved it. 3121 was a breeze to deal with. I had no problems, didn't experience 1 staff person being rude or anything. I would do it again in a heartbeat even at a grand. So I hear that might not of been his last 3121 performance...hmmmm. Another trip so soon:) We'll see!

Thanks and good night....Kimberly Martinez

Hey Kim!
You left out the part about spilling Jerome's drink on me when Miriam and I walked you to your cab!!! lol

I have to give props to DJ Rashida <--worship too for keeping the positive flow of the party mood going with the music she played, while we were waiting for the show to start. She had me and my crew on the left, front side of the stage bouncing to the ounce headbang dancing jig woot! music on Saturday night. Loved the videos that were played during that time as well.

Yes, I loved the clips that showed the history of music and dance, basicially where it all started from, including soul, latin, blues, jazz, caribbean and disco music from back in the day --Josephine Baker, the Nicholas Brothers, the Soul train clips, African dancing, the Black Brazilian movie clip of "Black Orpheus", Brazilian dancers from Rio de Janeiro carnival, the little African-American girl dancing and the freestyle dancers from back in the late 60s and early 70s, Rita Moreno dancing in West Side Story, clips of Catinflas and a culmination of different cultures that had an impact on the history of music and dance.

OMG I can't believe I get called a racist because I made the comment in my review that the big black woman (Shelby) screams like most big black women when she sings. That's like a black man saying that white men can't jump as a general rule. That's not racist. That's a fact. And so is my statement.

Name me a few big black women that don't yell and wail at you when they sing. The general rule is true.

I'm sick of this politically correct atmosphere that we live in where the truth is called racist. Get over it.

Noone can deny that Shelby yelled the entire time in both her songs. It's just the way black women are taught and raised to sing in the black church growing up. It's cultural and not racism. I know because I grew up in a black church.

And stating that you don't like the way big black women yell when they sing is not racist. It's called having preferences.

Learn what racism is before calling people racists and looking ignorant.

"Yelling" isn't excatly complimentary. It notes lack of talent. Kind of like when country singers let their voices crack to hit the next note. My friend was pretty pissed at me, saying it was a stylistic thing. She didn't call me racist, but she got panties all up in bung.
In general you're going to get yourself in trouble when you generalize by race. Shelby does belt it out more than Tamar for example, neither is "yelling".

I met these ladies this w/e you don't want mess with them biggrin

There's nothing wrong with having preferences but if you express them in a racial context, guess what. . . you're gonna risk looking/sounding racist and therefore rather ignorant. You could have easily said I don't like Shelby's voice and/or compared her to other singers that you do not like. But to say that all "big" black women yell when they sing IS ignorant. What do you call what Christina Aguilera calls singing??? And last time I checked she was not big, black, or raised in the black church, unless the Mickey Mouse club counts. As well as, Kelly Clarkson and a myriad of up and coming white female singers. This is why generalizations are not good because they are never valid.

I personally don't like the yelling and screaming but I like Shelby's voice because it's more soulful, powerful, and most importantly ON KEY which a lot of singers nowadys don't know how to do. Besides, I've heard her sing other songs softly, check out her MySpace page for instance. It's called range and versatility. And because that's what she did at the concert when you went does not mean that is all she is capable of. Geez, she only did 2 or 3 songs no doubt chosen by Prince.

Have you given a thought to the fact that obviously the way she's singing is at Prince's request who obviously loves having "big, black women" yelling on stage with him if you consider Boni Boyer, Rosie Gaines, the Steeles, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, and others. And actually Shelby is pretty petite, she's not a skinny girl but by no means fat especially when compared to other women Prince has worked with.

And regarding your comment that "black women are taught and raised" to sing that way is in and of itself an ignorant ass generalization. All people in a group do not automatically have the same experience based solely on a common skin color. You may want to be careful about over-generalizations.

As for naming a "few big black women that don't yell and wail at you when they sing" here goes:

Ella Fitzgerald
Phyllis Hyman
Denyece Graves
Randy Crawford
Roberta Flack
Billie Holiday
Etta James
Rachelle Ferrell
India Arie (not big but still)

And that's just off the top of my head.

And one more thing, regardless of how you feel about her voice, performance, or appearance you could have expressed your opinion without sounding intentionally cruel, hurtful, or rude, that's called tact. It's a trip how in today's society it is perfectly acceptable to spew any mean-spirited rant calling it an informed opinion without any regard for basic civility. As Prince once said:

U see, words are like shoes
They're just something 2 stand on
4 U words are definitely not shoes
They're weapons and tools of destruction
And your time is boring unless U're putting something down

I didn't read your thread, but maybe you made a generalization that all large Black Women yell when they sing. Whitney Houston yells when she sings, she's not large in size. If you wanted to say Shelby yells when she sings, that's totally different, but you give the impression that you are describing her in a derogatory manner intentionally.

There are large and small-sized white women and Black women that yell when they sing, size has nothing to do with the way they sing;take for example, the late Ethel Merman and Rosemary Clooney who are respected singers, not to mention the late, great "Janis Joplin" who screamed when she sang, she wasn't large, but she sang from deep down in her soul and screamed and yelled a lot but you knew where she was coming from whenever she yelled or screamed when she sang. Also, Teena Marie, whose voice definitely has some projection when she sings;another, Mama Cass from the Mamas and Papas; Christina Aguilera (latin/caucasian) and Mariah Carey; but in your comment, you are basically saying "all big, black women or all Black women singers raised in or out of church are taught to yell when they sing", that's basically generalizing. All these ladies regardless of their ethnicity sing with feeling, passion--it's called "soul" and size has nothing to do with it.

One more thing, you may want to check your tone to understand why your statements could be viewed as racist. Referring to her as "the big black woman (Shelby)" sounds ignorant. Why not just call her by her name when you typed it there anyway? And I guess all the white boys dunking during the Final Four tournament were a figment of my imagination. And when black guys say "white men can't jump" (which personally, I've NEVER heard a brother say this) it's meant as a joke not a "fact" which you say your statement is. I guess someone needs to explain to you the difference between a fact and an opinion.

Considering that you "grew up in a black church" (btw, what does THAT mean so do you get a ghetto pass because you went to a black church????) I would have hoped that you learned how to refer to black people, really any people, without sounding derogatory and how not to be insulting to your fellow man or woman. Isn't that the Christian way, or did you miss the day they preached on that in the black church you grew up in?

I loved Shelby’s performance at the aftershow. In speaking to her I found that although her voice is out of this world, she seems really down to earth. I hope that she gets the production that she needs for her full-length cd whistling . Not to sound negative but although I saw that the twins have a ton of talent and energy... I found them to be a little more choreographed than I’m used to for P. He usually has more Spontaneous dancers. I wouldn’t mind partying with them in a club though. That’s for sure.

I agree about the twins, but I think they're down right annoying on stage. All the hair flipping and spastic dancing takes too much attention away from Prince IMO. But I have noticed that as the shows have progressed, they've been featured less and less. However, off stage they along with Shelby have been very sweet, cordial and always willing to chat with fans even though they must be tired after the shows.

At the Fri. aftershow AND during Sat's show, she performed Mother's Finest "Baby Love." That song has been in my head ever since, to the point that I actually found the original version on iTunes and had to download it, just so I could hear it again and again.

lol lol I had the exact same experience, and did the exact same thing!
