My 2/24/07 3121 show/afterparty - (drums again!) experience 2/24/07 12:10am - 1:35am (1hr 25 mins)
Shelby was not at tonight’s show, as she had the flu apparently. Her microphone stand was there though, so that was kinda odd. Setlist from Saturday night’s show: Satisfied Girls & Boys Cream U Got the look If I Was Your Girlfriend Pink Cashmere/One Kiss At A Time What A Wonderful World Acoustic set Te Amo Corazon Little Red Corvette I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man Guitar Sometimes It Snows In April Gotta Broken Heart Again Lolita Black Sweat Kiss Purple Rain Encore Let’s go Crazy He opens the show with "Satisfied". This was a cool choice in my opinion. Yes, it is a slow song, but the lyric "This is gonna be a long nite..." was effective. (It turned out to be not so long, but I digress) But it created a nice vibe. He kicked right into "Girls and Boys". Same full version with the 3rd verse included. He ended the song with a resounding "YES!" - Morris Day style “Cream" was next. "Look up in the air, it’s my guitar" he said and did a nice little solo. He segued right into "U Got The Look". Fairly basic, nothing too exciting here. Next up was "If I Was Your Girlfriend". Nice to hear this played live again, but it was a bit short. The audience responded with enthusiasm when asked, "Would U let me wash your hair? Could I make U breakfast sometime?" A somewhat funky version of "Pink Cashmere" starts, which was stretched out quite a bit. He threw in a few lines from "One Kiss at a Time" which was a nice surprise! There was a long sax solo by Mike Phillips which good. Mike got a lot of exposure on this night. Prince and the whole band leave the stage, except for Renato and Mike Phillips. Mike is showcased on "What A Wonderful World". Now Mike and Renato leave the stage and Prince returns with acoustic guitar. Yeah! Another acoustic set! What’s he gonna play? He opens with "Te Amo Corazon", and sings the whole song. Never been a big fan of this song, but it was great acoustic. He goes right into "Little Red Corvette", which had loads of audience sing-a-long. “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" is next. Woohoo, this great! Amazing guitar work here. “Guitar" Holy cow, is he really singing this song? What a surprise! I didn’t recognize it at first until he sang the line "I love you baby, but not like I love my guitar!" I never really felt the studio version of this song with the percussion and his voice distortions. But again, playing this song acoustically was the bomb! I am sure 99.9% of the audience never heard this song before, but they seemed to really get a kick out of the lyrics. There was a great round of applause after this. Big smile on Prince’s face, too. The highlight of the show!! After the fast pace of the previous 3 songs, he slows it down with "Sometimes It Snows In April". It kinda broke the vibe a little, since everyone seemed to be grooving to "Guitar", and it seemed to be fairly short. Always nice to hear though. Ah, "Gotta Broken Heart Again" This was an amazing vocal performance. Very drawn out, he took his time here. It was very jazzy; a completely different arrangement than the album version from 27 years ago! Most in the audience didn’t seem to know this song, but seemed to enjoy the performance. Mike Phillips contributed a long sax solo in the middle. Yeah, finally we get to dance again with "Lolita" and "Black Sweat". Fairly standard versions here, and I was hoping for another bass solo like the night before, but no such luck. “Kiss" was next, yeah! He seems to really like playing this song, and the crowd was really into it, singing along. As soon as it ended, he went right into... “Purple Rain". I was like ‘already?’ But hey it was the first song played the previous night, so ok then. He said "I love this song" before starting the first verse. There was great guitar as always, and at the end, everyone left the stage. After a couple of minutes, the band returned and launched into "Let’s Go Crazy" And I guess this was the start of the encore, but I think it was the shortest version I have ever heard. And then that was it... ~~~~~ There were signs posted before the main show that there would be no aftershow, just DJ Rashida spinning. It said free admission though. The twins were there with their family, dancing and talking with folks. There were only about 40 people in the room. At about 3:15am Prince just walks in from the patio area and starts talking to Rashida. Then he starts laughing at people as they are dancing a-la Soul Train and doing their best to impress him. He seemed to be getting a kick out of it. Then Rashida puts on "I Know You Got Soul" and Prince proceeds to walk over the drum set. He just sits down and starts with the kickdrum and then playing the drums and cymbals without any drum sticks! I happened to be next to the drum set when he came over, so I was witnessing this from like 2 feet away! WOW. Then he gets up and goes back to Rashida and has her put on "It Takes 2" by Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock. The crowd is into it and singing along, and the Prince starts messing with the levels, muting the music and everyone says "ohh!" and he would put it up again. He did this a few times and was laughing all the while. Then, we went back to the drum set and this time picks up drumsticks and starts playing along for a few minutes. Then he went back to Rashida and had her put on the 12" version of "Kiss" and what does he do? Back to the drums! Unbelievable. He then got Rashida to play her single, and told us "That’s Rashida’s song". It was about 4am now, and then he says: "It’s late, ya’ll need to go to bed!" and left! | |
